The Will of William Slade
dated 11 February 1686
In the name of God Amen. I William Slade of the parish of
Gorran and Countye of Cornwall, yeoman being in health &
memory doe make and ordaine this my last Will & testament
in manner & forme followinge.
Item I give my soul to God and my bodie too bee buried in
the parish church of Gorran
Item I give to Beatrise my Wife in token of my love
the bedsteade furnished which wee usually lie on also one
of the milk pans and the littell chest one dozen of plates
and ten pounds in money which was a legasey given her by
her father.
Item I give to Edward my sonn Five pounds and to Peeter
my sonn Five pounds.
Item I give to John my sonn Forty pounds
Item * give to Simon my sonn one tenement which I have in
Treveor also I give him the land that was bought of Coga
by my father which I bought of my father to have and to hold
the said lands to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Also I give him Ten pounds provided that if William my son
shall within one year after my decease shall paye unto the
said Simon my sonn the sume of two hundred and Eighty
pounds that then hee the said William my sonne and his
heirs forever shall have and enjoy the said lands beesides
the ten pounds given.
Item I give unto my daughter Jane Moone five pounds and I
give twenty pounds which my son-in-law Cornelius Moone
Oweth me to be equally divided between his children.
Item I give to each of my daughters-in-law twenty shillings
and to each of their children forty shillings.
Item I give to each of my servants ten shillings
Item I give unto Sampson Hoyten my god sonn Five shillings
and to Mary Rankin my goddaughter Five shillings.
Item I give to the parish Church of Gorran and burying
place there Twenty shillings
Item I give to the poore of Gorran Forty shillings all
which legasies are to bee paid within Twelvemonths after my
decease and all the rest of my goods and Chattells not
given and bequeathed I give and bequeath unto William my
sonn whom I appoint to bee my executor to see my debts and
legasies satisfied which if he doe refuse I only give him
Five pounds and doe appoynt and ordaine Edward my sonn to
bee my executor and doe give and bequeath unto him all my
goods and chattells nott given and bequeathed. In witnesse
whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal this Eleaventh

In the name of God amen. I William Slade of Trevenin in the parish of Gorran in the County of Cornwall, gentleman, being weak of body but of a sound and perfect and disposing mind and memory do make and declare this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other wills made by me. Item I commend and bequeath my soul into the hands of allmighty God hoping through the merits of Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer to receive pardon and remission for my sinns and my body to decent and Christian Buryall at the discretion and charges of my Executor hereinafter named. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson William Slade son of William Slade gent, and my daughter Grace his wife all my household goods plate bedding brass pewter linen and all other household goods whatsoever, first my will and pleasure is that my son-in-law William Slade and Grace his wife shall enjoy and have the use of them during their joint lives and no longer and that none of them be removed out of the house but preserved and kept for my said grandson and if any are worn out new are to be provided by them in lieu of such as are worn out or destroyed. Item My will and pleasure is that all my stock as Bullocks sheep horses and all other my quick goods and also my corn and husbandry goods be soon after my death appraised at a reasonable value and my will and pleasure is that my son-in-law William Slade and my daughter Grace his wife shall have the use of them during their joynt lives and no longer except so much stock as is convenient for my grandson William Slade to stock the estate he is to enjoy and have in hand Emediately after my death and my will and pleasure is that my son-in-law William Slade and Grace his wife shall leave unto my grandson William Slade at such time as the possession of the estate of and in Trevenin on which I now live shall come to him, shall yield up to him so much bullocks sheep horses and other quick goods corn and husbandry goods as his own goods as shall amount to the value of the appraisal of my said stock corn and husbandry goods the same to be valued by two or more indifferent persons and if not done? and performed by then he is to pay my grandson and Executor so much mony as my stock corn and husbandry goods were appraised in at the end of one month after he has possession of the Estate and it is my will and pleasure that if my said grandson dies before the Estate comes to his possession or if he be marryd and has child or children and no heir male, that then what hereby is given to him shall come to his brother Edward Slade second son of William Slade and Grace his wife and I do hereby bequeath the same to be paid to him as it was to be paid to William Slade my grandson and in case the said Edward Slade dyes before the said Estate of Trevenin comes to him or he be marryd and have children, that the same shall come to any other sonn or sonns of the said William and Grace which they shall have at such time as the said Estate shall come to them or either of their possession. Item I give and bequeath unto the children of my daughter Mary the wife of Richard Broad gent, the sum of one hundred pounds lawful monies to be payd them by my Executor within one year after my death and I do also give unto my son-in-law Richard Broad and Mary his wife a gold ring each. Item I give unto my son-in-law William Slade ten pounds and a gold ring and to his wife Grace Slade a gold ring. Item I give unto my grandson Edward Slade two hundred pounds to be paid within one year after my death. Item I give and bequeath unto my two grand-daughters Margaret and Grace Slade daughters of William Slade and my daughter Grace Slade his wife to each of them fifty pounds to be payd within one year after my death and my will is that the same is to be disposed of my their father and mother to their best advantage untill they are capably of doing it themselves and if either of them dyes before she is capable or qualified to dispose there of then what given to such as shall so dye shall to and amongst such child or children of the said William Slade shall have by Grace his wife and if no other child by her to the survivor or survivors of the said Edward, Margaret and Grace Slade. Item I give and bequeath to Phillippa Fullpott who hath been servant a long time ten pounds lawful money to be paid by my Executor within one year after my death.
Item I give and bequeath to my brother Peter Slade a gold ring. Item I give and bequeath to my brother Symon Slade a gold ring. (Item I give and bequeath to my godsons Stephen Toms and ------ Slade of Tywardreath each a gold ring.) This item has been crossed out. Item I give and bequeath to my neece Ann Pointer twenty shillings to be given within one year after my death. Item I give to John Filpot and John ………. each ten shills and to all my servants with me at the time of my death five shills each to be paid soon after my death. Item I give to the poor of the parish of Gorran forty shills to be given to those that have no pay and for my buryall place and towards repairing the church twenty shill. Item all the rest of my goods and chattells debts and credits not herein and hereby given and bequeathed I do give and bequeath unto my grandson William Slade and doe hereby make him my whole and sole Executor of this my last will and testament not doubting but he will perform the same according to the intent thereof. Clerk, Master of Arts Archdeacon & so forth And Admion of all and Singular the Goods & so forth of the Said Deced & of all things howsoever concerning the Said Will, was Granted to the Executor therein named (being first in due form of Law …… Saving & so forth No Inventry IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I William Slade of Trevennen in the County of Cornwall Esquire being of sound and disposing Mind do make this my last Will & Testament in Manner following (that is to say) -- first I will that my Funeral Charges and Debts shall be paid Also I give unto my dear Wife Catherine Slade such Part of my Plate as has been bought since our Marriage Also I give unto my Maid Servant Susanna Ball and her Assigns for and during the Term of her natural Life One Annuity or clear Yearly Rent of Three Pounds lawful Money of Great Britain …… of all Rates Taxes and other Deductions to be issuing and payable out of my Capital Messuage or Farm called Trevennen in the Parish of Gorran in the County of Cornwall, the said Annuity to be payable by equal quarterly Payments at the four most usual Feasts or Days of Payment of Rent in the Year, that is to say, Christmas-Day, Ladyday, Midsummer-Day, and Michaelmas-Day. The first Payment thereof to be made on such of the said Feasts or Days as shall first and next happen after my Decease And in Case the said Annuity or Yearly Rent or Sum or any Part thereof shall be behind or unpaid by the Space of thirty Days next over or after either of the said Feasts whereon the same is – hereinafter appointed to be paid as aforesaid Then and so often as it may so happen it shall be lawful for her the said Susanna Ball and her Assigns into and upon the said Capital – Messuage or Farm or any Part thereof to enter and distrain for the same Annuity or so much thereof as shall be so in Arrear. Estate situate lying or being in the Parish of Gorran in the County of Cornwall, or elsewhere in the said County of Cornwall To have and to hold the said Manors, Bartons, Messuages, Lands, Tenements, - Hereditaments and Real Estate with their and every of their Appurtenances unto the said – Thomas Jago his Heirs and Assigns for ever Upon Trust nevertheless and to and for the Uses hereinafter mentioned expressed and declared of and concerning the same; and to and for no other Use or Purpose whatsoever, that is to say, To the Use of my Nephew William Slade Gully and the Heirs of his Body lawfully to be begotten And in Case the said William Slade Gully shall die without leaving such Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten Then from and after the Death of the said William Slade Gully To the Use of my beforenamed Cousin Edward Slade the Elder for and during the Term of his natural Life And from and after the several Deceases of them the said William Slade Gully and Edward Slade the Elder, in Case the said William Slade Gully shall die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten Then to the Use of William Slade Son of the said Edward Slade the Elder and the Heirs of his Body lawfully to be begotten And in Case the said William Slade Gully shall die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten And if the said William Slade the Son of Edward Slade the Elder shall happen to die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten Then from and after the several Deaths of the said William Slade Gully, Edward Slade the Elder, and William Slade Son of the said Edward Slade the Elder To the Use of Edward Slade Son of the beforenamed Edward Slade the Elder and the Heirs of his Body lawfully to be begotten And if the said William Slade Gully shall die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten, and if the said William Slade, the Son of Edward Slade the Elder shall also die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten; and if the said Edward Slade the Son of Edward Slade the Elder shall likewise die without leaving Heirs of his Body lawfully begotten Then from and after the several and respective Deaths of the said William Slade Gully, Edward Slade the Elder, William the Son of Edward Slade the Elder, and Edward Slade the Son of Edward Slade the Elder To the Use and Behoof of my own Right Heirs forever Provided nevertheless and it is my Will, notwithstanding any Thing hereinbefore contained That if my said Nephew William Slade Gully shall at any Time marry, Then and in such Case he shall have and I do hereby give him a Power of charging all any or either of my Manors, Bartons, Messuages, Lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, and real Estate to and with the Payment of any Yearly Sum not exceeding Sixty Pounds per Annum to such Woman as he may marry with during her natural Life Also It is My will that neither the said William Slade Gully nor any other Person of Persons who shall by Virtue of this my Will possess my Freehold Manors, Bartons, Farms, Messuages, Lands, Tenements, and Hereditaments shall cut of destroy any thriving Timber growing on the same or any Part thereof As to All my Leasehold Messuages and Tenements and all other my Goods, Chattels and Personal estate not hereinbefore given and disposed of I give and bequesth the same and every Part thereof unto my Nephew William Slade Gully Subject to the before mentioned Annuity of Twenty Pounds payable to my Cousin Edward Slade the Elder out of Trevascus, And I do make and appoint the said William Slade Gully sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament But I do hereby subject and charge all my Real and Personal Estate and Estates to and with the Payment of my Debts Legacies and Funeral Charges, And I do hereby revoke and make void all former Wills by me made In Witness whereof I the said William Slade the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament (contained in three Sheets or Pieces of Paper) set my Hand and Seal this Thirteenth Day of October in the Year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty Three. Pomery (signed) Seraphin Perkin (signed) William Stocker (signed) I William Slade of Trevennen in the County of Cornwall Esquire do make and publish this my Codicil to my last Will and Testament in Manner following, that is to say, - Whereas I have in and by my last Will and Testament bearing even Date herewith, given unto my good Friend Thomas Jago of the Parish of Mevagissey in the County of Cornwall Mercer his Heirs and Assigns for ever All my Freehold Manors Bartons Messuages Lands Tenements Hereditaments and Real Estate situate lying or being in the Parish of Gorran in the County of Cornwall or elsewhere in the said County of Cornwall Upon the Trusts and to and for the Uses in my said Will mentioned expressed and declared of and concerning the same, but there is no Power of Leasing given in and by my said last Will Now it is my Will and I do hereby declare it so to be that my Nephew William Slade Gully and such other Person as shall from Time to Time by Virtue of the Uses in my said Will be intitled to my said Manors Bartons Messuages Lands Tenements Hereditaments and Real Estate shall and do hereby give him or her a Power from Time to Time to Lease the same or any Part thereof at a proper yearly Rent for any Term not exceeding the Term of Twenty one Years under such Covenants – Conditions Reservations and Agreements as are usual in Leases of this Sort, the Rent mentioned in such Lease or Leases to be reserved and made payable to the Lesor – and during such Part of the said Term as shall run out in the Lifetime of the Lesor – And from and after the said Lesor's Death the Rent reserved to be made payable to such Person or Persons as will be entitled by Virtue of the Uses in my said Will to enjoy my said Manors Bartons Messuages Lands Tenements Hereditaments and Real Estate Also it is my Will and I do hereby give a Power to the said William Slade Gully and such Person as will from Time to Time be entitled by Virtue of the Uses in my said Will to my Manor called Treveage in the said Parish of Gorran to grant, if he or they shall think proper so to do, for proper Fines or Considerations to be paid to the Lesor or Lesors, Original or Reversionary Leases of any Parts thereof for Ninety-nine Years, determinable on the Death or Deaths of one two or three Person or Persons under Conventionary Rents and other Dues not less than have been reserved in the former Leases thereof And under such Covenants Conditions Reservations & Agreements as have been inserted in such former Leases, The said Rents and Dues to be made payable to the Lesor during such Parts of the said Terms as shall run out and expire in the Lifetime of such Lesor And from and after the Death of such Lesor the said Rents and other Dues to be made payable to such Person or Persons as will by the Virtue of the Uses in this my said Will be intitled to my said Freehold Manors Bartons Messuages Lands Tenements Hereditaments and Real Estate And it is my Desire that this present Codicil be annexed to and made a Part of my last Will and Testament to all Intents and Purposes In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Thirteenth Day of October in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-three – William Slade (signed) Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the Testator William Slade as a Codicil to be annexed to his last Will and Testament in our Presence who subscribed our Names in his Presence W Pomery (signed) Seraphin Perkin (signed) William Stocker (signed) I William Slade of Trevennen in the County of Cornwall Esquire do make and publish this my Second Codicil to my last Will and Testament in Manner following, that is to say, I give and bequeath unto my Dear Wife Catherine Slade her Executors Administrators and Assigns One Moiety of that Fourth Part which came to me in Right of my said Wife, of the Capital Messuage Barton or Farm called – Court in the Parish of Lanreath in the County of Cornwall To hold the said One Moiety of the said Fourth Part of the said Capital Messuage Barton or Farm called Court unto the said Catherine Slade her Executors Administrators and Assigns for such Term as I have or can claim therein by Virtue of any Lease or Deed or otherwise howsoever In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Thirteenth Day of October in the Year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty-three William Slade (signed) Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the Testator William Slade as a Second Codicil to be annexed to his last Will and Testament in our Presence who subscribed our Names as Witnesses in his Presence W Pomery (signed) Seraphin Perkin (signed) William Stocker (signed)

| From the Proical History of Cornwall concering 'Trevanion' it states of that period in which it was written: "This place is now the seat, under lease, of Simon Slade, Gent., a younger brother of the late Mr. William Slade of Trevennen. Mr. Simon Slade was twice married, first to one of the daughters of Mr. Thomas Hancock, of Pengelly in Creed, and not having any surviving children, he married secondly the daughter of Stephen Thomas, of Tregamena in Verian, gent. by whom he has twe sons and two daughters." | ||

The Will of Simon Slade, dated 14 September 1743 St Michael Carhays 11th May 1747 The Will of One Simon Slade lately deced proved in common Forme Before the Reverend Mr William Wadden Clk Master of Arts Official etc And Admion of the Goods etc of the Said Deced and of all things howsoever concerning the Said Will was Granted to the Exeutor in the said Will named being first Sworne etc/ Saving etc/ No Inv My last Will & Testamt. In the name of God Amen I Simon Slade of the Parish of St. Michael Caryhaies in the County of Cornwall Gent being (God be praisd) of Sound mind doe make and ordain this to be my last Will & Testamt To wit First of all I give unto my dearly beloved wife the Bed whereon she lyes, furnished, wth one Guinea of Gold to be paid to her by my Execr herein after named wthin one moneth after my Decease. Alsoe I give unto my daughter Elizabeth the Sum of one Hundred & fortie pds lawfull money of Great=Brittain to be pd to her by my Execr wthin one year after my Death. Contributed by Geoff Watts The Will of Simon Slade, dated 1 May 1776 St Michael Carhayes 21st June 1776 The Will of one Simon Slade lately Deced Proved in Common form before the Revd Mr Edmund Powell Clerk Bachelor of Arts Surrogate Etc And Admion of the Goods etc of the said Deced & of all things howsoever Concerning the said Will was Granted to William Slade Esqr. Peter Thomas & William Jacob Three of the Executors in Trust named in the said Will (A Power being Reserved & Granting the like Admion to Isabella Slade the Widow of the said Deced & the other Execr in Trust also named in the said Will when ever she shod think Proper to take the same upon herself) /being first Sworn etc./ Saving etc No Inventry IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Simon Slade of the parish of St. Michael Carhayse in the County of Cornwall being weak in Body but of sound and perfect Mind Memory and Understanding Thanks be to God for the same do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following First I resign my Soul into the Hands of God that gave it, and my Body to the Earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executors hereinafter Named. And as to the Worldly Goods and Effects which the Lord has been pleased to bless me with I give and dispose of them as follows Imprimus I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved Wife Isabella five Guineas to be paid her at my decease; the further Sum of fifty Pounds to be paid her by my eldest son Simon at the End of Six Months after my decease, and twenty five Pounds pr Year, to commence at my Death, and to be paid Quarterly out of Treberricks so long as she lives. Also I give and devise to my Son Simon All that my Messuage and Tenement situate lying and being in the Parish of St. Ewe call'd or known by the Name of Bulsue formerly in the Possession of Joseph Seccombe, to hold to him my said Son Simon and his Assigns until he becomes posses'd of the Lands of Levessick in the Parish of St. Austle by the Death of Mrs Mary Carkeet Widow, and from and after the Death of the said Mary Carkeet, and he becomes possessed of the said Lands of Levessick aforesaid he shall hold the said Tenement call'd Bulsue for the space of one whole Year and no longer and from and after the Expiration of one Year, I give and devise the same to my younger Son Peter his Heirs and Assigns for ever. Also I give and bequeath to my said Son Simon All that my Messuage and Tenement call'd by the Name of Trelissick, and all those my Messuages and Tenements calld by the Name of the two Polgraines, to hold unto my said Son Simon so long as the lives shall live, charged and chargeable however with the Payment of such Legacyes and Annuities as is herein mentioned. Also I give and bequeath to my said Son Simon one half of all my Corn Cattle and Implements of Husbandry (except one Sorrel Horse which is to be the Sole Property of my Son Peter) to hold to him and his Assigns for ever. Also I give and bequeath to my Daughter Ann the Wife of William Ricket eight Pounds Pr Year so long as She lives; but if She becomes a Widow eighteen Pounds a year during her Widowhood, to be paid her by my Son Simon out of the Estates to him bequeathed as aforesaid. Also I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth eighteen Pounds a Year until she shall attain the Age of twenty one Years, to be paid by my Executors out of my Estate called Betty's Govily in the Parish of Cuby: and when she attains the Age of twenty one Years, I give and bequeath to her my said Estate called Betty's Govily to hold to her and her Assigns so long as the lives shall live, and one hundred and fifty Pounds in Money, one half to be paid by my Son Simon, and the other half by my Executors hereinafter named. Lastly All the Rest, Residue and Remainder of my Personal Estate Goods and Chattles of what Nature kind or Quality soever (not herein before given and bequeathed) I give and bequeath the same to Isabella my Wife, William Slade Esqr of Gorran, Peter Thomas of Ruanlanihorne Gent. and William Jacob of the Borough of Tregony Schoolmaster (in trust for my younger Son Peter) whom I doe nominate constitute and appoint joint Executors in trust for my said Son Peter of this my last Will and Testament. And if it shall happen that either of my Sons shall die before the Age of twenty one Years then his part of my Effects herein given and bequeathed shall become the sole Property of the Survivor; and I do hereby revoke all former and other Wills by me at any Time heretofore made. The Will of Elizabeth Slade, dated 8 June 1776 St Michael Carhayse 21st June 1776 The Will of one Elizabeth Slade Spinster Deced, Proved in Common form before the Revd Mr Edmund Powell Clerk Bachelor of Arts Surrogate etc & the admion of the Goods etc of the said Deced & of all things howsoever Concerning the said Will was Granted to the Executor in Trust therein named/ being first Sworn etc/ Saving etc/ No Inventry In the name of God Amen I Elizabeth Slade of the parish of St. Michael Carhayes in the County of Cornwall Spinster being weak in Body but of a sound and disposing Mind memory and understanding (thanks be to Almighty God for the same) Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in Manner and Form Following, that is to say First I give and bequeath to my sister in Law Isabella Slade Widow the Sum of Two pounds & two Shillings to be paid her within six months next after my Decease by my Executor hereinafter named Item I give and bequeath to my Nephew Peter Slade the Sum of Eighty pounds to be paid him by my Executor herein after named on his Attainment of the Age of Twenty one years & not otherwise also I give unto my said Nephew Peter Slade my Silk Bed Quilt, my four best Tea Spoons and Tea Tongs One half Dozen China Tea Cups and Saucers, My Wainscot Table and Damask Table Cloth and one Silver Meat Spoon to be given him or such other person as he shall appoint immediately after my Decease -- also I give unto my niece Ann now the wife of William Rickett of the parish of St. Blasy the Sum of Ten pounds to be paid her by my Executor hereinafter named for her own separate use & Exclusive of her Husband who is not to Intermeddle therewith to be paid her one half at the Expiration of two Months after my decease the Remainder at the End of twelve Months likewise to my said Niece four Blanketts and four Bedsheets and the Bed, Bedtye Bedstead and Furniture wherein I now usually lodge and one of the Quilts to be delivered by my Executor immediately after my decease -- Item I Give unto my Niece Elizabeth Slade the Sum of Twenty pounds to be paid her by my Executor at her Attainment of the Age of Twenty one years and I likewise give to my said Niece my Chest of Drawers Three Silk Gowns, One Linnen Bed Quilt, Two Tea Kettles, one Silver Meat Spoon and some odd blue and white China Cups and Saucers to be delivered to her Mamma for her use immediately after my decease -- also I give and bequeath unto Ipsa parnall Wife of Mr. Richard parnall the Sum of Five pounds to be paid her by my Executor hereinafter named within Three Months next after my Decease to buy some plate to keep for my Sake -- also I give unto my Kinswoman Elizabeth the Daughter of Bernard and Temperance Rowse of St. Collumb if living at the time of my Death the Sum of Ten pounds to be paid her by my Executor within one year next my Decease Item I give unto Elizabeth Quintrell Daughter of James Quintrell of the parish of Verryan my God:Daughter the Sum of Five pounds to be paid her when she comes of Age - likewise a Crape Gown & hat to be given her immediately after my decease -- Lastly All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Messuages Lands Tenements Goods Chattles and Effects whatsoever or wheresoever situate after payment of my just Debts Legacies and funerall Expences I Do Give – devise and bequeath unto Richard parnall of the aforesaid parish of St. Michael Carhayes In Trust and for the only proper Use and Behoof of my Nephew Simon Slade untill his Attainment of the Age of Twenty one years & no longer But in Case my said Nephew Simon Slade shall dye before he attains the Age of Twenty one years Then In Trust for my nephew the abovenamed peter Slade untill he comes of Age But in Case my both Nephews dye before their Attainment of the Age of Twenty one years then In Trust for my two Nieces Ann and Elizabeth to be equally divided between them share and share alike, and I do hereby make constitute and appoint him the said Richard Parnall Whole and Sole Executor of this my last will (But In Trust only as aforesaid In Witness whereof I have hereunto Sett my Hand and Seal this Eighth Day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred & Seventy Six Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the said Testatrix as and for her last Will and Testament In presence of us The sign and Mark of Elizabeth Slade Richard Parnall (signed) Jno.
