There Are More TOMS in the House
[Ancestors of James Toms, Husband of Ellen Hender]
There are two TOMS families which marry into
the family of Thomas Rowe Hender and Marianna Trout. One Selina Toms
marries William Hender, son of Thomas and Marianna and that information is
to be found on the TOMS 1 page. Here on the TOMS 2
page will be presented the TOMS family of James TOMS who married Ellen
Hender, daughter of Thomas Rowe Hender and Marianna Trout. Interestingly
both TOMS families run back to a Francis TOMS in just three generations, but
NOT the same Francis TOMS. Here we will begin with that third generation back
of the Francis TOMS family of East Looe.

** Both Francis TOMS and Mary families can be found claiming 'James Roberts TOMS as their
"James TOMS". What is interesting is the Talland family shows no census evidence that
the family had a 'James Toms'. And whether this Francis and Mary family's 'James Toms'
is 'James Roberts TOMS' or not, one thing is for sure from the census and other
evidence and that is there was for sure a James Toms in this family that would marry
Susanna Pengelly and have a son also named James Toms who would marry Ellen Hender and
have a family of many TOMS children. And that is supported by the census records,
marriage records, and Christian baptism records.
* The 1841 Census is known for 'rounding ages' so the fact that both James and Thomas are
shown as being 20 on the 1841 Census does not indicate that they are twins. In fact the
1851 Census will show this Thomas Toms as age 32 and James as age 29 which ought to
clarifiy it.

Now this accounts for those of the family of 1841 in that John TOMS is married with a family of his
own and still calculated to being born about 1813. John has five children. James TOMS has also married
and is with his family of three children, one of whom is James TOMS who will marry Ellen Hender. As
for Jane TOMS of the 1841 family, she matches with Mary TOMS of the 1851 family with the qestion to be
answered it the girls full name Mary Jane?

- Parish Christian baptism record for John TOMS, 5 Sep 1813 at St Martin by Looe, parents Francis
and Mary and on John TOMS and Jemina Vincent marriage entry it names John's father as Francis
and Jemina's as Joseph.
***- This James TOMS IS the son of Francis TOMS born about 1885, the James TOMS of East Looe.
Whether he is the same as James Robert TOMS who is recorded as being born 28 Apr 1821 and
Chrisitan Baptism 27 May 1821 at Polperro Wesleyan, is of question. Certainly that birth date
and given that a St Martin Looe parish baptism is not found for him leaves the possiblity open.
At least it is as possible if not more so than that James Robert TOMS was the son of the 'other'
Francis and Mary TOMS of Talland, for there is found no census record in support that that
family ever has a son 'James ToMS' or 'James Robert TOMS'.
- The wife of this James TOMS is Susanna PENGELLY the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth PENGELLY
as both her Christian baptism and parish marriage record does so state her perentage to be of
such.

Ellen Hender is consistently recorded in the records as just Ellen Hender. But at some
point, when listed as the Mother of Laura Toms, she is listed as Ellen Louisa Toms. And it appears
from the baptism records the daughter Ellen was named after her mother as Ellen Louise/Louisa.
