(Once Upon a Time, in a Land that Was this Land of Zarahemla)

by Don R. Hender

The year is about 350 A.D. Mormon has just delivered the Nephite nation from the hands of their enemies the Lamanites. But unlike the first deliverance, Mormon was not able to secure or resecure the lands of the nation of Zarahemla back to the Nephites as he had at the time of his first deliverance some 20 years earlier. This time, in order to spare the nation, a treaty of give and take had to be negociated wherein the Lamanites were given all the lands south of the narrow neck of land which included the nation lands of Zarahemla which we have been studying, and the Nephites were granted all the lands north of the narrow neck of land. Mormon had pushed the invading Lamanite surge into the land northward back to the narrow neck with his defence of the northern region of the neck about the local city and land of Desolation. From that date onward and forever, the land south of the narrow neck would be controlled by the Lamanites except for a brief invasion which was unsuccessful by the Nephites which also led to the final colapse to the entire Nephite nation by 485 A.D. (Mormon 7).

Thus the days and times of the Nephite in South America came to an end. And for some 1660 plus years now only the Lamanite influence has been in those regions virtually erasing any and all traces of the hated Nephite civilization. Surely in respect to Zarahemla and those historic national lands of the Nephites all signs of their ever being there have been erased which was the purpose and the intent of the Lamanite hatred against them.

During the days of the Nephites there were horse, machinery, and the use of the wheel as a mode of transportation. The only thing that has remained in the proof of existing is the wheel. For many, many years it was taught and accepted in academic circles that the Ancient Americans did not know of the advanced concept of the use of the wheel. This has continued dispite all the grand buildings and structures of high civilization which have been unearthed and discovered all across the Americas. Academia would still be of such an opinion if it where not for a handful of surviving wheeled toys for the days of the Ancient Americans. So complete has been the destruction of the Nephite way of life and high civiliazaion of the Ancient Americans that despite these toys, science persists in their conclusion that the Ancient Americans did not utilize the principle of the wheel.

So complete have been the 'dark ages' of America, that it has left most domestic animal species extinct including the horse, it has left it a mystery how such an uncivilizated people could construct such grand and great structures as are in the Americas, and it has left much of the advancements of the era of enlightenment of the Nephites and the 200 years of Christain Utopia in a cloud of misunderstanding. What are the Nazca lines. Did Ancient American civiliation have access to flight as these images and lines seem to only make sense from the air where they can be viewed and appreciated. Surgery in the Nephites times would place metal plates in the skulls of the injured and they would live. The calander of even the Maya today is more accurate than any calendar that European society has ever come up with. What advanced knowledge and understanding beyond that which we have today can only be guessed at. And our educated society of today still chose to leave them way short of what they once where.

The Europeans have treated the poeples of America as uncivilized natives. Anything that was left over from any golden ages long past of the Ancient Americans has for the most part been even further destroyed by the discovery, colonization, and resettlement of the lands of America. And after the Lamanite destruction of all that was Nephite and the further European ignorance and destruction of the same of anything that would give any such indication of such high civilization developments of the Ancient Americans, we are but finally discoverying and learning a little of this people's once greatness and civilization. Yet even now we make them the authors of human sacrifice and false gods, which the later Lamanites espoused. Only the Book of Mormon portrays them as they where, once upon a time, many, many years ago in a land which beyond the wisdom of man is this very land in which we now live.

This Colombia land of Zarahemla is now the most dangerous land in the Americas in which to travel. More kidnappings of tourist happen there than in any other country in the world. Its remotes lands are controlled and governed by the Colombian Drug Lords. Any remaining evidences of the ancient Nephites is daily being lost as time and today's environmental conditions are the enemy. Looters of these sites are merely interested in that which brings earthly wealth, such as gold which need not even retain its found state to be cashed in for its monetary value. Potery and other significant archealogical evidence is ignored and destroyed in the processes. Even any such turned in articles can be of questionalbe origin as to just when and what site they may have come from. Many sites go unreported and are never professionally known or excavated. They remain for the most part, unknown. Satan, in Colombia, has secured the land well against organized discovery and archealogical study. Only a bare minimum of data is available from the few sites accessible.

What else is there, one must ask? And when if ever will we ever have access to such? Yet what is known correlates well with the once Colonized and Settled Lands of Zarahemla. The exclusive Lamanite occupation bent on Nephite destruction, the Spanish conquest and hunger for gold, and even the modern era have taken their toll for over 1650 years in the land. But I believe there is much to be found in support of the Nephite nation, yet even if there is not, the ultimate truth of the matter as revealed by the Holy Ghost can never be dimmed or taken away from the earth, and man need only listen and be open for such and it will testify to the truth of the matter of the Book of Mormon and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
