John Raby Carswell |
Note name & range of life 1861-1881. The birth assumed on a baptism of 4 April 1861? In some cases months or years may occur before a baptism. His death date is recorded accurately but not completely from a source. |
|
When John Raby Carswell was born in March 1861 in Menheniot, Cornwall, his father, John, was 42 and his mother, Emmeline, was 30. He married Julia Addeline Butler on September 25, 1880. They had 10 children in 18 years. He died on May 20, 1881, at the age of 20. |
Father's/Mother's ages calculated. Elsewhere on a timeline the marriage was to have been at Butte, California. Ten children in 18 yrs from as 2 to 20 or reincarnation from the dead? |

Birth John Raby Carswell was born in March 1861 in Menheniot, Cornwall to Emmeline Roby (Raby), age 30, and John Carswell, age 42. Map (having been shown) March 1861 • Menheniot, Cornwall, England |
Redundantly stated and presumed and variously calculated information. Note the seemingly informative misreading of the name Roby being dominately displayed instead the more accurately sourced name of Raby. |

Residence John Raby Carswell lived in Menheniot, Cornwall, in 1861. Age: 1 Months; Relation: Son Map (previously provided) 1861 • Menheniot, Cornwall, England |
Likely based on the 7 April 1861 Census that lists their son's age as 1 mouth. March is a fair estimated birth date. Where they lived, Bolitho Farm, was nearer to Liskeard City than the village of Menheniot. As such they have listed both the baptism parish Menheniot and Liskeard variously as their place of birth. |
|
I interupt here to support that on the 1861 Census the family was living on the Beloitho (Bolitho/Beloytha) Farm, nearer the city of Liskeard than the village of Menheniot in phsical location, though reported on the Menheniot census record. Father John Carswell was farming 165 acres, and employing 2 men and 2 boys in doing so, making him a Yeoman rather than simply a Farmer or Ag Labourer. His son's full name is given on the census, John Raby Carswell. The household also employed two female house servants and one additional male house servant. Also living with them at the time of this census was John's 41-42 year older mother than her solo child, Elizabeth Carswell, which the census taker lists as being a 'Lady.' She was Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead of Trewen, Liskeard whose husband was noted in brother Cornelius' Will as being Robert Carswell. And by that Will was the later widowed Elizabeth Carswell and her son John Carswell were on the 1841 and 1851 census records living at Trewen. At least that is some more of the family's history/story I thought I could here additionally share.

Jane Stephens Carswell was baptized 10 July 1862 at Menheniot. The story appears to reference the birth index kept by Districts (Liskeard) and Quarters (the ending month of each quarter). Per index she was born from July 1 - September 30. This means she was born from July 1 to July 10. Given March 1861 as the birth month date of John Raby Carswell, he would have been 1 year 3 months and some days when his sister was born in the first part of July 1862. |

The District of Liskeard included Menheniot, St Keyne, Duloe and such, all the way down to the south coast of East and West Looe, etc. NOTE: John Raby Carswell was named after his mother's father. Jane Stephens Carswell was named after mother's mother. And Elizabeth Moon Carswell was named after her father's mother. |

Charles Honey (Henry) Carswell was baptized 22 Mar 1866. Honey is likely a poor written or read Henry. He was named after two of his mother's uncles Charles and Henry Raby. His father's father's name was Robert Carswell-see Cornelius Moon's Will linked above. Not all children born are baptized if they die in the days after birth or a baptism record may be lost. And perhaps there was a child born named Robert Carswell who is currently unknown? |

These next three story items are grouped together because it is going to take an around the world turn that is either a very very sad tale or possibly three different people's data that has been struck together out of an unbelievable set of circumstances. At the age of 19 John Raby Carswell has left England, met and married a Julia Addeline Butler in and gotten married 25 September 1880 at age 19, at Butte, California, died at the age of 20 in the midst of 'The War in the Pacific (1879-1884)' out of Iquique, Peru, South America on 20 May 1881, and had his first born son Obediah Carswell by wife Julia A Carswell in Morganton, Burke, North Carolina on 7 June 1881. Don't get out your calculator or world map yet. Those three put together 'facts' are possible for a single person to do. It would help if he were two or three people though. Even if just one of those 'facts' were true it would stand out in a person's life. But so maybe you say okay this is possible and I'm going to bit, it such a sad made for Holywood type story. |

Now, before we go much further lets visit the truth. There was a John Raby Carswell who married his wife Julia Adeline Butler on 25 September 1880 but NOT in Butte, California. They married where they both had been born, in North Carolina. They married in Burke County, North Carolina. There are dozens of public family pedigrees on Ancentry.com that state it, even from those who are 'family' and 'know'. They will tell you that their John Raby Carswell was born on 23 June 1862, in Morganton, Burke, North Carolina to Nathan Carswell and Jane Eliza Denton, both also born in North, Carolina. The 1900 census of this 'family' linked next states that son Obediah Carswell was reported by the 'family' and written down by the census taker as of June 1884 and that son Calvin Carswell was first born in October of 1882. Some of the various public reporting families will state it differently but all agree that they all, all the children were born in Burke, North Carolina. The family spans from the bottom of one page to the top of the next page-links provided next.
There seems to be two people who were named John Raby Carswell. The one born in North Carolina who did marry Julia Adeline Butler, and died on 18 July 1927 at Gastonia, Gaston, North Carolina. The other was born about March, 1861 in Cornwall, England as the first part of this currently presented story states at its beginning. And as will once again be visited that story did actually end with his death on 20 May 1881, he being then there at Iquique, Peru, South America.

Now this has an actualy source tied to this information. It is the probate record of this John Raby Carswell so reported on it as being deceased, Iquique, Peru, South American. That was in the midst by in time and location of 'The War in the Pacific (1879-1884)' between Peru, Bolivia and Chili. At the date of death, Iquique was still in recognized position of Peru. It was at the end of the war that it was transfered in settlement to Chili. |

This children of the family are listed as per the continuing story told from the one public site being here reviewed. It may be readily compared to the census record linked to that contains these same children that further reports that both themselves and both their parents were born in North Carolina. In addition to these children listed by name it appears from the 1900 census record most if not all being conceived and born after the death of the John Raby Carswell of Cornwall, England in 1881. There is one more child that is added to the family by the truly seemly connected family members of this family: Bertha Carswell, born 25 June 1902, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina. The father of the North Carolina John Raby Carswell, Nathan Carswell died 25 May 1907 at Morganton, Burke, North Carolina. His mother, Jane Eliza Denton died 12 Jun 1907 at Morganton, Burke, North Carolina. It truly appears that the true facts of these two people, both named John Raby Carswell, have been combined together in various manners upon 12 of the contributed pedigrees concerning a person named John Raby Carswell. At least this one reviewed did post enough of the story of the matter to allow the unsorting of the 'facts' IF one did not just jump to the wholesale adoption of their Story concerning John Raby Carswell. |

This final story fact is one that is easily varifiable, and it can shed much light upon the mystery of John R (Raby) Carswell who on the one hand had been dead since 20 May 1881 but fathers about 10 children after being dead. The 1900 United State Census record is that record which has already been displayed ABOVE and also linked to in full. |
