[Will the Real John Raby Carswell Please Stand Up?]

There are lies waiting to entrap you on the Genealogy Websites. If you want a quick and dirty pedigree you can find one there. Don't get me wrong. I use these sites and there is a lot of good information there. That is 'IF' you know what you are looking for and how to verify what is there as being the truth OR NOT!

~ John Raby Carswell ~
(1861-1881)

Case in point is my three-way cousin John Raby Carswell. My cousin is found on no less than 16 public trees on one of the best known and highest advertised and 'connected' Genealogy or Ancestry sites. The one, like most, that lets anyone post anything without it being verified or even rational. Of those 16, which list John Raby Carswell's parenats as John Carswell and Emmeline/Emmaline Raby, there is only one who solidly lists the truth of the matter, that this particular John Raby Carswell, my cousin, was born in England in 1861 at Menheniot, Cornwall, England and died at the age of 20 in association with Iquique, Peru, South America. There are 3 others that have found only his birth and not gone beyond that, but they are truthful in their limited knowledge presented. Thus one fourth, 25% of those first 16 responding trees that list John Raby Carswell's parents as John Carswell and Emmeline Raby will not lead you astray, with one being a very good site and three being good but limited in not finding his death or many further details.

But then the confusion begins. To varying degrees the other 12 or 75% of those who place the parents of John Raby (Roby) Carswell as John Carswell and Emmeline/Emmaline Raby/Roby are filled with incorrect 'infornmation' and have presumed to make the coveted tie across the Ocean from America back to a mother country in Europe, perferably England. And depending upon what an American family may wish to seek unto, despite the facts of the matter, it is laid down for them to buy into. In short, the family of the four children of John Carswell and Emmeline Raby all died without marriage and became an end to that Carswell family group. If one were searching in earnest for the ancestors of their American John R Carswell family, they could look to the facts as presented in these 12 family trees and be throughly misled and/or totally confused and taken advantage of. And if like myself, they were searching for information concerning their relatives, their cousins, they could also in like manner be grossly misled.

Now IF one gets beyond the first 16 trees, there are also other family trees there that make the parents of John 'Raby' Carswell to be such a Nathan Carswell and Eliza Jane or Jane Eliza Denton. So one solution is to dig deeper, which takes much time or 'hire a paid' genealogist. And that may be part of the 'mystic' of these mis-informative sites.

Here I'll merely list one such record of the family of John 'Raby' Carswell of North Carolina that is proof that he is not immediatly born of England but of North Carolina. It is but one actual, factual, historical record that ought to preclude making a wrong turn into a coveted but false American tie between here and England and to a certain family over there, which are cousins of mine and known to become extinct rather than to have migrated to the United States. That is as resurrection or ghostly renewal into the flesh are not currently available unto ordinary men.

What is seen here is the bottom of a 1900 U.S. Census page for North Carolina, Burke Country. By clicking the images, the full sized readable sheet is accessed that may be resized larger. These 6 lines which are given in two connectable images at the '9 | 9' (9s), give enough information about John R. Carswell of the United States to set a person on the line of truth concerning him and that he is not the same as the John Raby Carswell baptised in Cornwall, England in 1861. This 1900 census gives that John R. Carswell was born June 1862 and that not only was he born in North Carolina, but both his father and mother were also born in North Carolina.

The LIFE STORY of John Raby Carswell as given by one of the misleading sites will be presented. It will be given the way I found it. See if you can pick up on the errors as this site at least gives enough information and sources so if compared and if you pay attention to, truth should will out. I'll comment upon it in the more narrow column at the right.

Now consider John Raby Carswell's LIFE STORY as can be given by such a misleading site:

John Raby Carswell
1861–1881

Birth MARCH 1861 • Menheniot, Cornwall, England

Death 20TH MAY 1881 • South America

Note name & range of life 1861-1881.

The birth assumed on a baptism of 4 April 1861? In some cases months or years may occur before a baptism. His death date is recorded accurately but not completely from a source.

When John Raby Carswell was born in March 1861 in Menheniot, Cornwall, his father, John, was 42 and his mother, Emmeline, was 30. He married Julia Addeline Butler on September 25, 1880. They had 10 children in 18 years. He died on May 20, 1881, at the age of 20.

Father's/Mother's ages calculated. Elsewhere on a timeline the marriage was to have been at Butte, California. Ten children in 18 yrs from as 2 to 20 or reincarnation from the dead?

Birth

John Raby Carswell was born in March 1861 in Menheniot, Cornwall to Emmeline Roby (Raby), age 30, and John Carswell, age 42.

Redundantly stated and presumed and variously calculated information. Note the seemingly informative misreading of the name Roby being dominately displayed instead the more accurately sourced name of Raby.

Residence

John Raby Carswell lived in Menheniot, Cornwall, in 1861.

Age: 1 Months; Relation: Son

Map (previously provided)

1861 • Menheniot, Cornwall, England

Likely based on the 7 April 1861 Census that lists their son's age as 1 mouth. March is a fair estimated birth date.
Where they lived, Bolitho Farm, was nearer to Liskeard City than the village of Menheniot. As such they have listed both the baptism parish Menheniot and Liskeard variously as their place of birth.

I interupt here to support that on the 1861 Census the family was living on the Beloitho (Bolitho/Beloytha) Farm, nearer the city of Liskeard than the village of Menheniot in phsical location, though reported on the Menheniot census record. Father John Carswell was farming 165 acres, and employing 2 men and 2 boys in doing so, making him a Yeoman rather than simply a Farmer or Ag Labourer.

His son's full name is given on the census, John Raby Carswell. The household also employed two female house servants and one additional male house servant. Also living with them at the time of this census was John's 41-42 year older mother than her solo child, Elizabeth Carswell, which the census taker lists as being a 'Lady.' She was Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead of Trewen, Liskeard whose husband was noted in brother Cornelius' Will as being Robert Carswell. And by that Will was the later widowed Elizabeth Carswell and her son John Carswell were on the 1841 and 1851 census records living at Trewen.

At least that is some more of the family's history/story I thought I could here additionally share.

Birth of Sister

John Raby's sister Jane Stephens was born in September 1862 in Liskeard, Cornwall when John Raby was 1 year old.

Jane Stephens Carswell

1862–1941

September 1862 • Liskeard, Cornwall, United Kingdom

Jane Stephens Carswell was baptized 10 July 1862 at Menheniot. The story appears to reference the birth index kept by Districts (Liskeard) and Quarters (the ending month of each quarter). Per index she was born from July 1 - September 30. This means she was born from July 1 to July 10. Given March 1861 as the birth month date of John Raby Carswell, he would have been 1 year 3 months and some days when his sister was born in the first part of July 1862.

Birth of Sister

John Raby's sister Elizabeth Moon was born in December 1863 in Liskeard, Cornwall when John Raby was 2 years old.

Again the index appears as source meaning Elizabeth Moon Carswell was born October 1 - December 31 & baptized 14 Jan 1864. The District of Liskeard included Menheniot, St Keyne, Duloe and such, all the way down to the south coast of East and West Looe, etc.
NOTE: John Raby Carswell was named after his mother's father. Jane Stephens Carswell was named after mother's mother. And Elizabeth Moon Carswell was named after her father's mother.

Birth of Brother

John Raby's brother Charles Henry was born in March 1866 in Menheniot, Cornwall when John Raby was 5 years old.

Charles Honey (Henry) Carswell was baptized 22 Mar 1866. Honey is likely a poor written or read Henry. He was named after two of his mother's uncles Charles and Henry Raby. His father's father's name was Robert Carswell-see Cornelius Moon's Will linked above. Not all children born are baptized if they die in the days after birth or a baptism record may be lost. And perhaps there was a child born named Robert Carswell who is currently unknown?

Death of Father

John Raby's father John passed away on June 5, 1867, in Menheniot, Cornwall, at the age of 48.

John Raby Carswell's father, John Carswell dies leaving a Will which is probated. From that probated Will information the date of death of 5 June 1867 is given plus other 'family' tied in information. Calculatable or actually so stated on the parish burial record, he was of age 48. Also between the records it may be deduced that from before 1851 to and after his death in 1867, the family has resided at Bolitho, which is same as Beloytha, Beloitho and Bolithoe.

Residence

John Raby Carswell lived in Devon, in 1871.

Age: 10; Relation: Pupil

1871 • St Andrew, Devon, England

John Raby Carswell is a pupil/scholar at school, St Andrew, Plymouth, Devon on the 1871 Census. His family has moved into the city at Tremedden Terrace—Now Tremeddan Court or Lane, in the city of Liskeard?

Death of Brother

John Raby's brother Charles Henry died on June 9, 1878, in Devon when John Raby was 17 years old.

Charles Henry Carswell

1866–1878

Charles Henry Carswell's Parish Burial record reports that his residence and perhaps likely where he died in Devon, was Charles, Devon. He was buried 12 June 1878 at Liskeard at age of 12 according to that burial parish record. This leaves John Raby Carswell as the family's sole surviving son at age 17.

These next three story items are grouped together because it is going to take an around the world turn that is either a very very sad tale or possibly three different people's data that has been struck together out of an unbelievable set of circumstances.

At the age of 19 John Raby Carswell has left England, met and married a Julia Addeline Butler in and gotten married 25 September 1880 at age 19, at Butte, California, died at the age of 20 in the midst of 'The War in the Pacific (1879-1884)' out of Iquique, Peru, South America on 20 May 1881, and had his first born son Obediah Carswell by wife Julia A Carswell in Morganton, Burke, North Carolina on 7 June 1881.

Don't get out your calculator or world map yet. Those three put together 'facts' are possible for a single person to do. It would help if he were two or three people though. Even if just one of those 'facts' were true it would stand out in a person's life. But so maybe you say okay this is possible and I'm going to bit, it such a sad made for Holywood type story.

Now, before we go much further lets visit the truth. There was a John Raby Carswell who married his wife Julia Adeline Butler on 25 September 1880 but NOT in Butte, California. They married where they both had been born, in North Carolina. They married in Burke County, North Carolina. There are dozens of public family pedigrees on Ancentry.com that state it, even from those who are 'family' and 'know'.

They will tell you that their John Raby Carswell was born on 23 June 1862, in Morganton, Burke, North Carolina to Nathan Carswell and Jane Eliza Denton, both also born in North, Carolina.

The 1900 census of this 'family' linked next states that son Obediah Carswell was reported by the 'family' and written down by the census taker as of June 1884 and that son Calvin Carswell was first born in October of 1882. Some of the various public reporting families will state it differently but all agree that they all, all the children were born in Burke, North Carolina. The family spans from the bottom of one page to the top of the next page-links provided next.

1900 Census Page 1
1900 Census Page 2

There seems to be two people who were named John Raby Carswell. The one born in North Carolina who did marry Julia Adeline Butler, and died on 18 July 1927 at Gastonia, Gaston, North Carolina. The other was born about March, 1861 in Cornwall, England as the first part of this currently presented story states at its beginning. And as will once again be visited that story did actually end with his death on 20 May 1881, he being then there at Iquique, Peru, South America.

Now this has an actualy source tied to this information. It is the probate record of this John Raby Carswell so reported on it as being deceased, Iquique, Peru, South American. That was in the midst by in time and location of 'The War in the Pacific (1879-1884)' between Peru, Bolivia and Chili. At the date of death, Iquique was still in recognized position of Peru. It was at the end of the war that it was transfered in settlement to Chili.

This children of the family are listed as per the continuing story told from the one public site being here reviewed. It may be readily compared to the census record linked to that contains these same children that further reports that both themselves and both their parents were born in North Carolina.

In addition to these children listed by name it appears from the 1900 census record most if not all being conceived and born after the death of the John Raby Carswell of Cornwall, England in 1881. There is one more child that is added to the family by the truly seemly connected family members of this family:

Bertha Carswell, born 25 June 1902, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina.

The father of the North Carolina John Raby Carswell, Nathan Carswell died 25 May 1907 at Morganton, Burke, North Carolina. His mother, Jane Eliza Denton died 12 Jun 1907 at Morganton, Burke, North Carolina.

It truly appears that the true facts of these two people, both named John Raby Carswell, have been combined together in various manners upon 12 of the contributed pedigrees concerning a person named John Raby Carswell. At least this one reviewed did post enough of the story of the matter to allow the unsorting of the 'facts' IF one did not just jump to the wholesale adoption of their Story concerning John Raby Carswell.

This final story fact is one that is easily varifiable, and it can shed much light upon the mystery of John R (Raby) Carswell who on the one hand had been dead since 20 May 1881 but fathers about 10 children after being dead. The 1900 United State Census record is that record which has already been displayed ABOVE and also linked to in full.

John Robert Carswell

Some sites make John R. Carswell of North Carolina John Robert Carswell and NOT John RABY Carswell.
