CORNELIUS MOON, YEOMAN of LISKEARD

(1769 - 1837)

The following is the will of Cornelius Moon, Yeoman of Liskeard, as transcribed from such record by his 5th Great Nephew Don R. Hender. Brior to Cornelius' death in 1837, his brother Nicolas Moon, my 4th great grandfather had died in 1826, his brother Robert Moon had died in 1805, and his other brother Joseph Moon had died in 1804. His sisters had married or passed on, the last of which was Eliabeth Moon who married Robert Carswell, the baby sister. It is only this sister therefore who is mentioned in Cornelius' will. The following color codings will be used to identify known relationships in the will.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Cornelius Moon of Treween in the Parish of Liskeard in the County of Cornwall, Yeoman whom am in health and of Sound and disposing mind memory and understanting do make and Publish the same in manner following
I give and devise unto my dear Sister Elizabeth the wife of Robert Carswell To hold to She and unto her Son his hiers and assigns after Him deceased for ever - All my Freehold ?Customary? and Copyhold messuages Legacies and Tenements Isack Hills, ?Ilnilley? Penquit, Trewidland and Trewen ?Scuntny? and wheresoever situated and all other my real Estate with the Appertenaces
But if my said Sister Elizabeth shall happen to die before or after her present husband Robert Carswell, having at he decease no Son offspring nor issue of him or them then living, Then I give and devise all my Freehold Customary of Copyhold Messuages lands and Tnements wheresoever situated and all other my real Estate with the appurtenances unto the Said Robert Carswell To hold to him his heirs and assigns for ever Subject nevertheless and chargeable with the Payment of all just Debts as I Shall owe thereon at the time of my death and as my Personal Estate shall fall Short in paying
All the rest Residue and Remainder of my Goods Chattels And Effects of what nature of kind soever after payment of my just debts Funeral expenses and the charge of proving this my Will I give and bequeath unto my said Sister - Elizabeth Carswell her Executors Administrators and Assigns. And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint the Guardian if required and Sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament to hold the land without controul of her husband hereby revoking all former Wills by me made In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this fifteenth day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight Hundred and twenty two.

Proved in Common form 16th February 1837 before John Wallis the younger Clk Surogate etc And Admion of all and Singular the Goods etc of the said deceased and any way Concerning the Said Will was granted to Elizabeth the Wife of Robert Carswell the Sister of Deceased and Sole Executrix
Being first Sworn etc. Saving Etc.

By the time that this Cornelius Moon dies and leaves his will, which only names his sister Elizabeth, who has married Robert Carswell, his other siblings have passed away or are removed from connection as to be included in Cornelius' last will and testament. Thus it seems well just to review here the family to which this Cornelius Moon belonged to.
The parents where Edward Moon and Jenny/Jane Morshead. Their children were:
1) Nicholas Moon, may 4th great grandfather who married Mary Ann Fitze and died in 1826 leaving a will that sets out his family at that point.
2) Susanna Moon who married Joseph Moon of High Clicker, whose children were Joseph, Jenny, and Charles Moon. She died young in connection with the birth of her son Charles Moon and was buried 3 December 1795 and her son Charles was baptized 6 January 1796 but likely born November 1795.
3) Cornelius Moon, born 1767 died 1767.
4) Cornelius Moon, baptism 1769, whose will is above written 1832, but he did not die until 1837.
5) Robert Moon, born 1772, died 1805 leaving a will.
6) Jenny/Jane Moon born/baptism 1775; Married Richard Stephens and not mentioned in Cornelius' will.
7) Elizabeth Moon, born/baptims 1777; Married Robert Carswell as named in Cornelius' will.
8) Ann Moon, born/baptism 1781; Married Richard Hingston, but not mentioned in Cornelius' will.
The reasoning of why only sister Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell is named in her brother Cornelius' will seems to be due to the matter of living with or near to Cornelius. Her other two sisters, whose deaths are not mentioned previously, are settled and seem to be possibly living elsewhere by 1832/7, Jenny/Jane Stephens and Ann Hingston. All his other siblings are deceased before him.
