PrefaceA Nice Pedigree Display as Is on Ancestry.com
Because there is no real precautions against 'mis-information' even when such is readily to be found in error, many gullible and innocent novice 'genealogist' are there easily taken for a ride into a false and even perhaps fabricated family pedigrees. All information or rather 'DATA' not only ought to be 'proved' based upon reliable source work and evidences and NOT just accepted wholesale because it is in print upon the internet. With all the positives that may be gained at sites like Ancestry.com and such other 'service sites,' there are also the negatives of mis-information and falsehood that seems in some cases to prevail over what is the truth of a vitally correct set of genealogical facts. I have found multiple errors made in my own genealogical lines that I know are incorrect, misleading, being adopted as truth, and even seemingly being used to promote some personal incentives not consistent with supplying truth but rather promoting fictions and errors to generate confusion, discussion and designs of purposes other than the search for family history truth. That said, I will continue to use Ancestry.com and other such sites to the advantage of benefiting from what is there that is of truth and worth. Yet I feel to warn young, often new, eager and novice 'genealogists' who are susceptible and even prone to falling into adopting false pedigree merely in the excitement of having found something. They seem not to be aware of the time structured pedigree builders who build and display their products without respect or regard for the need for truth rather than just to have to have a pedigree. Beward of such genealogies and of the entrapments of pedigree builder errors that seem to proliferate with no more of a solid foundation than self pride and hiden agendas. A most excellent FREE leading genealogy service site is 'Family Seach' provided by The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Join there and used their services and links to other good partner sites. CARSWELL FAMILY HISTORY

Where this marriage took place is not currently known. That it did take place in comfirmed in the will of Elizabeth's borther Cornelius Moon where it gives to Elizabeth the wife of Robert Carswell the rights of dwelling at Trewen, which is further established by the residence note in their son's baptism below. |
Marriage Entry of John Carslwell of Bolitho and Emmeline Raby of Hendra
Officiating Clergyman: John Raby (1834-1915) brother of the bride Emmeline Raby. Witness: John Raby Sr., father of Emmeline Raby and John Raby the Officiator. Witness: Kitty Carswell, likely cousin of John Carswell, groom. Witness: R Hingston Jr., Richard Hingston, Surgeon, husband of Ann Moon, - uncle-in-law to John Carswell through Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell mother of John and sister of Ann Moon AND great uncle-in-law to Emmeline Raby through Emmeline's mother Jane Stephens' mother Jenny Moon sister of Ann Moon. Family of John Carwell and Emmeline RabyThe family of John Carswell and Emmeline Raby is another case of family being inter-related. John Carswell is the only son of Robert Carswell and Elizabeth Moon. This Elizabeth Moon is the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. And by the will of Elizabeth's brother Cornelius Moon, written in 1832 and probated in 1837, come the Trewen land rights where Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, wife of Robert Carswell, and her son John Raby Carwell are living upon on the 1841 and 1851 census records as first presented below. Note that while the 'rounded 1841 Census' does give the son's age nearly correct despite the rounding of the age, the 1851 Census age of the son is completely an error in the OPC online project that extracts from the original. The Census Records Of Carswell Family1841 Census - Liskeard, Trewen* Trewenn,1,John Carswell,20^,,Farmer,In county, [Son Robert & Elizabeth Carswell, b 1818] ,,Elizabeth Carswell,,60^,,In county, [Mother Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, b 1777] ,,William Lobb,20,,Male Servant,In county, ,,John Rower,10,,Male Servant,In county, ,,Elizabeth Congdon,,20,Female Servant,Not in county, [Note: The 1841 Census has the adult ages generally rounded down in 5 year intervals with few exceptions. This means that John Carswell age 20 was age 20-24 and Elizabeth Carswell age 60 was age 60-64. Also Note: If you link to the actual census pages above linked, you may want to take a look at the left hand page for Little Treheer, where the remains of the Nicholas Moon and Mary Ann Fitze family is. Mary Ann would be widowed but of the same generation as is Elizabeth, John Carswell's mother, Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell. And Mary Ann's deceased husband, Nicholas Moon, would be Elizabeth's oldest brother.] * Any interest in Trewen in Liskeard was that which would have come by way of the will of Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell's brother Cornelius Moon - WILL. ^ Elizabeth Carswell is the same as Elizabeth Moon the daugher of Edward Moon and his wife Jenny Morshead. Dispite the age difference between Elizabeth Carswell and John Carswell, Elizabeth is John's mother. He is the son of Robert Carswell and Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell mentioned in the will of Cornelius Moon just previously cited. Elizabeth is Cornelius Moon's sister, daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead as stated. The family members missing are father John Carswell who has died in 1867 at age 48 and son John Raby Carswell, who would be age 10. Now there is a very likely person, in fact it is determined that he is attending school in Devon at the time of the Census. Whether that 'School' is just a private corporate school for who appear to be boys or a theological seminary cannot be determined for sure with the limited knowledge I currently have. If John Raby Carswell is taking after his uncle John Raby who is a Clergyman, the Officiator at his parents' wedding, then he may have been acting in a theological capacity in Iquique, Peru in the middle of The War in the Pacific (1879-1884) when in died there in 1881. If not, there were certainly an opportunity to be there as a member of the armed forces representing British concerns there. Two such British ships are known to have been in action there about this time and occasion. In either case a 20 year old Clergyman or a 20 year old English sailor is still quite young to be off and away. But it certainly is possible. Iquique is one of the sea port cities that was in the middle of the war's concerns and being disputed between Peru, Bolivia and Chili. But back to the case at hand. On the 1871 Census at St Andrew, Plymouth, Devon is to be found our John R Carswell, age 10 and born at Menheniot, Cornwall. The pieces fit with a small exception. Cursive or script handwriting is certainly faster and more convenient than the labour of printing each single letter out one at a time. But Cursive also seems to carry a curse of carelessness and some difficulty is reading what has been written as it where. That is the case on the Census record. John Raby Carswell is written out as John A. Carswall by he who wrote out the census record linked to in this paragraph. And though the hand writing does look nice, there are some other close misses that are questionable. Is it William R or A Cox? Is it Johnson or Johnsen? And there is a Mary A or R ___well there too. With the place of birth and the age in place and no such other John Carswell or Carswall about in Menheniot, it has to be settled upon that the capital R is either not understood by the writer and a poorly formed R that looks like an A. The Botton Line is that here is our John Raby Carswell, age 10 born in Menheniot, Cornwall in school as a pupil and scholar at St Andrew in Plymouth Devon. Just ask Eliza Jenmiy which must be Jennings, or Alfred Michelmad?

Of the four siblings, Charles Henry(Honey) Carswell died first at the age of 12 and was buried at Menheniot per Parish entry. That record is in the OPC Parish records transcriptions. As for the others their deaths will be further associated with their Will extracts that tell something about each of their deaths. Each will be covered in the order that thay occured so that the relevant timing of the events can be associated one with the other as they do have some shared elements, including the father and mother as well.

Relationship PedigreeEdward Moon = Jenny Morshead _______________________|_________________________ | | | Mary Ane Fitze = Nicholas Moon Jenny Moon = Richard Stephens Elizabeth Moon = Robert Carswell |_____ |_____ | | | | Philip Trout = Susanna Moon John Raby = Jane Stephens | |___________ |_________ _________| | | | Thomas Rowe Hender = Mari Aina Trout Emmeline Raby = John Carswell | | (Our Hender Family) (4 Raby Children) Elizabeth Moon married late to Robert Carswell and had her son John Carswell in 1818 at the age of about 41 (1818-1777=41) as witnessed by the information of the 1851 census. Jenny Moon married young, about 22, and had her daughter Jane Stephens at age about 23 (1808-1775). Jane Stephens married John Raby about the age of 21 (1829-1808) and had her daughter Emmeline Raby about the age of 24 (1832-1808). John Carswell born 1818 age is rounded reported as 20 in 1841 and wrongly reported as 22 in 1851, but is more correctly reported in 1861 at age 41. Thus John Carwell marries in 1860, about age 41 to Emmeline Raby age about 28. They have four children beginning with John Raby Carswell early in 1861, Jane Stephens Carswell later in 1862, Elizabeth Moon Carswell very early 1864 and Charles Honey Carswell in 1866. John Carswell then dies and is buried 11 June 1867 at the age of 48. He thereby leaves his wife about 35 with four young children under age 8. |
