Preface

A Nice Pedigree Display as Is on Ancestry.com

The Ancestry.com genealogy internet site, and many such others, can be a very good source of family information. Public contributed compilations of family information are accepted as long as they are not abusive in nature. Such visual displays as the one above can give a readily visual and impressive display of a family pedigree. That said in support of Ancestry.com, there is also to be stated a warning and a danger of such internet sites of Genealogical Research, even the very good ones.

Because there is no real precautions against 'mis-information' even when such is readily to be found in error, many gullible and innocent novice 'genealogist' are there easily taken for a ride into a false and even perhaps fabricated family pedigrees. All information or rather 'DATA' not only ought to be 'proved' based upon reliable source work and evidences and NOT just accepted wholesale because it is in print upon the internet.

With all the positives that may be gained at sites like Ancestry.com and such other 'service sites,' there are also the negatives of mis-information and falsehood that seems in some cases to prevail over what is the truth of a vitally correct set of genealogical facts. I have found multiple errors made in my own genealogical lines that I know are incorrect, misleading, being adopted as truth, and even seemingly being used to promote some personal incentives not consistent with supplying truth but rather promoting fictions and errors to generate confusion, discussion and designs of purposes other than the search for family history truth. That said, I will continue to use Ancestry.com and other such sites to the advantage of benefiting from what is there that is of truth and worth.

Yet I feel to warn young, often new, eager and novice 'genealogists' who are susceptible and even prone to falling into adopting false pedigree merely in the excitement of having found something. They seem not to be aware of the time structured pedigree builders who build and display their products without respect or regard for the need for truth rather than just to have to have a pedigree. Beward of such genealogies and of the entrapments of pedigree builder errors that seem to proliferate with no more of a solid foundation than self pride and hiden agendas.

A most excellent FREE leading genealogy service site is 'Family Seach' provided by The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Join there and used their services and links to other good partner sites.

CARSWELL FAMILY HISTORY

prepared by Don R. Hender

THE Carswell family ancestry of my related cousins is very interesting. And they are my cousins in at least three immediate ways. This first simple stick pedigree is from which I look for my Carswell cousin family to come as suggested by such as parish records made available freely on the internet by such as the Cornwall OPC free information service into the parish records of Cornwall and many other such information projects. Just type in 'Cornwall OPC' into you internet web browser and see what comes up, or click on the link provided here above.

A christening or baptism date in NOT a birth date though many people use it as such.
Also: A burial date in not a death date though it is nearer the death date than what
a baptism date might be to an actual birth date. Sometime baptism(s) may be put off
for months and even years. And just like today, a coming birth may be the incentive
for the marriage, so early births right after the marriage date do happen. And both
writers of Parish records and transcribers of them do make mistakes and some funny
spelling errors of names. Styles of cursive writing often breed reading errors.)

- Beyond the 'nice fit' that parish records might suggest, additional work and sources must also
be investigated—such as census records, Wills, Admons., Probates, Property records, etc. and
even family knowledge and traditions are great to get started with. In truth, beginning with the
person(s) in your perhaps even extended family that would know a lot or has done much previous family
research, can help you avoid many pit falls and confusion of the quick but often wrong 'pedigree
builders.'

Emmeline's mother Jane Stephens' mother Jenny Moon sister of Ann Moon.

Family of John Carwell and Emmeline Raby

The family of John Carswell and Emmeline Raby is another case of family being inter-related. John Carswell is the only son of Robert Carswell and Elizabeth Moon. This Elizabeth Moon is the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. And by the will of Elizabeth's brother Cornelius Moon, written in 1832 and probated in 1837, come the Trewen land rights where Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, wife of Robert Carswell, and her son John Raby Carwell are living upon on the 1841 and 1851 census records as first presented below. Note that while the 'rounded 1841 Census' does give the son's age nearly correct despite the rounding of the age, the 1851 Census age of the son is completely an error in the OPC online project that extracts from the original.

The Census Records Of Carswell Family

1841 Census - Liskeard, Trewen*

Trewenn,1,John Carswell,20^,,Farmer,In county, [Son Robert & Elizabeth Carswell, b 1818]
,,Elizabeth Carswell,,60^,,In county, [Mother Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, b 1777]

        ,,John Rower,10,,Male Servant,In county,
        ,,Elizabeth Congdon,,20,Female Servant,Not in county,

[Note: The 1841 Census has the adult ages generally rounded down in 5 year intervals with few
exceptions. This means that John Carswell age 20 was age 20-24 and Elizabeth Carswell age 60 was
age 60-64. Also Note: If you link to the actual census pages above linked, you may want to take
a look at the left hand page for Little Treheer, where the remains of the Nicholas Moon and Mary
Ann Fitze family is. Mary Ann would be widowed but of the same generation as is Elizabeth, John
Carswell's mother, Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell. And Mary Ann's deceased husband, Nicholas Moon,
would be Elizabeth's oldest brother.]

* Any interest in Trewen in Liskeard was that which would have come by way of the
will of Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell's brother Cornelius Moon - WILL.
^ Elizabeth Carswell is the same as Elizabeth Moon the daugher of Edward Moon and
his wife Jenny Morshead. Dispite the age difference between Elizabeth Carswell and
John Carswell, Elizabeth is John's mother. He is the son of Robert Carswell and
Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell mentioned in the will of Cornelius Moon just previously
cited. Elizabeth is Cornelius Moon's sister, daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny
Morshead as stated.

ALSO: 1841 Census - Menheniot - Hendra This is Emmeline Raby's family on the 1841 census in Menheniot at Hendra.

1851 Census - Liskeard, Trewen* 38,Trewen,John Carswell,Head,U,22*,,Farmer Of 40 Acres,Liskeard Cornwall,, [His age is 32] ,,Elizabeth Carswell,Mother,W,,75*,Annuitant,Liskeard Cornwall,, [His mother's age 73] Folio 279 Page 10 ,,Elizabeth White,Servnt,U,,30,House Servant,St Keyne Cornwall,, ,,John Brissant,Servnt,U,19,,Farm Lab,Talland Cornwall,,Surname uncertain * The Census is either mis- or poorly written or read. John Carswell's age is 32 and his Mother's age is 73. This is the reason that Elizabeth Moon and Robert Carswell had only the one son. Elizabeth was in her 40s when her son John was born. And it is one of the primary reasons the relationship pedigree displayed at the end of this page has a generation jump/skip between the husband John Carswell and his wife Emmeline Raby. What are the two numbers at the right? Are they 22 and 75 or 32 and 73? Straight from the Census page as written are these 1851 ages of John Carswell and Elizabeth Carswell. Here it can be seen that the 'LINED OVER' first figure is a 3, not a 2 making his age 32 and his mother's is obviously 73 NOT 75.
1861 Census - Menheniot, Beloitho Farm [1861 finds Elizabeth Carswell still alive at her correctly reported age of 83.] 96,Beloitho Farm,1,John Carswell,Head,M,41,,Farming 165ac Emp 2 Men 2 Boys,Liskeard Cornwall ,,,Emmelin Carswell,Wife,M,,30,,Menheniot Cornwall ,,,John Raby Carswell,Son,,1m,,,Menheniot Cornwall ,,,Frances M Tamblyn,Servnt,U,,15,Housemaid,Liskeard Cornwall ,,,Ann Hoar,Servnt,U,,20,Dairymaid,Liskeard Cornwall ,,,Thomas Welsh,Servnt,U,17,,Carter,Duloe Cornwall ,,,Elizabeth Carswell,Visitr,W,,83,Lady,Liskeard Cornwall (Lady Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell) Folio 59 Page 19 Between his mother delivering him in her 40s and John Carswell being l0 years older than his wife Emmeline Raby, Emmeline has an interesting set of relatives to the four children she will have. Her own grandmother, Jenny [Moon] Stephens and her mother-in-law Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell were sisters. Jenny/Jane [Moon] Stephens, mother of Jane [Stephens] Raby, and grandmother of Emmeline Raby, was the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. Also John Carswell, Emmeline's husband's mother, Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell is also a daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. Check out the relationship line pedigree are the end of this page. Now the diference in age between John Carswell of 41 and Elizabeth Carswell at the end of the family group on the census, at 83, is likely an indication of Elizabeth's age when she delivered her only son, John Carswell. And in Elizabeth's brother's Will, Cornelius Moon in 1837, he named her and her son as his heirs, including to Trewen. And that it was to her and her son only, and not to any husband, but to the son. Thus for the 1841 and 1851 census the were living at Trewen, mother and son. Now that John Carswell was married he has moved to the Beloitho (Beloytha/Bolitho) Farm, which is another family associated site.
1871 Census - Liskeard, Tremedden Terrace 11,Tremedden Ter,1,Emmeline Carswell,Head,W,,39,Annuitant,Menheniot Cornwall ,,,Jane S Carswell,Dau,,,8,Scholar,Menheniot Cornwall ,,,Elizabeth M Carswell,Dau,,,7,Scholar,Menheniot Cornwall Folio 6 Page 4 ,,,Charles H Carswell,Son,,5,,Scholar,Menheniot Cornwall ,,,Jane Goldsworthy,Servnt,U,,22,General Servant,St Cleer Cornwall
The family members missing are father John Carswell who has died in 1867 at age 48 and son John Raby Carswell, who would be age 10. Now there is a very likely person, in fact it is determined that he is attending school in Devon at the time of the Census. Whether that 'School' is just a private corporate school for who appear to be boys or a theological seminary cannot be determined for sure with the limited knowledge I currently have. If John Raby Carswell is taking after his uncle John Raby who is a Clergyman, the Officiator at his parents' wedding, then he may have been acting in a theological capacity in Iquique, Peru in the middle of The War in the Pacific (1879-1884) when in died there in 1881. If not, there were certainly an opportunity to be there as a member of the armed forces representing British concerns there. Two such British ships are known to have been in action there about this time and occasion. In either case a 20 year old Clergyman or a 20 year old English sailor is still quite young to be off and away. But it certainly is possible. Iquique is one of the sea port cities that was in the middle of the war's concerns and being disputed between Peru, Bolivia and Chili.

But back to the case at hand. On the 1871 Census at St Andrew, Plymouth, Devon is to be found our John R Carswell, age 10 and born at Menheniot, Cornwall. The pieces fit with a small exception. Cursive or script handwriting is certainly faster and more convenient than the labour of printing each single letter out one at a time. But Cursive also seems to carry a curse of carelessness and some difficulty is reading what has been written as it where. That is the case on the Census record. John Raby Carswell is written out as John A. Carswall by he who wrote out the census record linked to in this paragraph. And though the hand writing does look nice, there are some other close misses that are questionable. Is it William R or A Cox? Is it Johnson or Johnsen? And there is a Mary A or R ___well there too. With the place of birth and the age in place and no such other John Carswell or Carswall about in Menheniot, it has to be settled upon that the capital R is either not understood by the writer and a poorly formed R that looks like an A. The Botton Line is that here is our John Raby Carswell, age 10 born in Menheniot, Cornwall in school as a pupil and scholar at St Andrew in Plymouth Devon. Just ask Eliza Jenmiy which must be Jennings, or Alfred Michelmad?

Where and what she might be doing is speculative, but with another life event at hand there is a possibility. Her sole surviving son, John Raby Carswell, age 20 is in the midst of 'The War in the Pacific' (1879-1884) and he will die 20 May 1881 in association with being at Iquique, Peru, South America. If his death was not sudden, preliminary notice may have reached his mother Emmeline Carswell in association with matters of her being away from both her daughters and not to be found on the 1881 Census of 3rd of April. ~ Concerning the 'place' of the two daughters birth being variously reported as Menheniot or Liskeard, may it be observed that they were Christened/Baptized at the parish of Menheniot. Yet they were likely living/born at Beloytha/Bolitho Farm which is located near to and associated with the district and city of Liskeard.

Carswell Family Ancestry

Robert Carswell is the son of John Carswell and Mary Richards. That Robert Carswell married Elizabeth Moon, daughter of Edward Moon an Jenny Morshead. As Elizabeth Carswell, Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell inherited from brother Cornelius Moon, such property rights that led her family to reside at Trewen of Liskeard. It is there at Trewen that the 1841 and 1851 Census finds the mother and son, John Carswell and Elizabeth Carswell. Thus the parents of John Carswell are Robert Carswell an Elizabeth Moon of Trewen, Liskeard. Then of course that John Carswell marries Emmeline Raby, which Emmeline Raby also descends from Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead through another daughter named Jenny Moon, Elizabeth Moon's sister as presented above. follow: John Carswell = Mary Richards | | m 9 Feb 1790 | Liskeard | _________| | Robert Carswell = Elizabeth Moon* cb 13 Aug 1792 | cb 7 Nov 1777 Liskeard | Liskeard | db ? Trehalvin, St Keyne Liskeard Liskeard a12 db 23 Jun 1944 Liskeard a80 * Elizabeth Moon is the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny [Jane] Morshead as may be seen on the related Moon Cousin's page. In respect to her as the wife of Robert Carswell a 'news' related reference to her death is to be found in 'The Cornish Telegraph of Cornwall, England, 'news' dated 3 December 1869:
"At Liskeard, on the ult., Elizabeth, relict of the late Mr Robert Carswell, of Trewen Farm, age 9 yean."
Now in news print errors are frequent. Being a widowed 'relict' wife of Robert Carswell she could hardly be age 9. Actually she was age 92 and buried at the end of November 1869 per her parish burial entry of St. Keyne. The news print does give the family tie information that her husband is Robert Carswell and they were of Trewen thus further associated with my Moon family. ** Under the conclusion that Charles Honey Carswell is the same as Charles Henry Carswell and likely transcriptions of handwritten parish records failed to note it was 'henry' not 'honey'.

Of the four siblings, Charles Henry(Honey) Carswell died first at the age of 12 and was buried at Menheniot per Parish entry. That record is in the OPC Parish records transcriptions. As for the others their deaths will be further associated with their Will extracts that tell something about each of their deaths. Each will be covered in the order that thay occured so that the relevant timing of the events can be associated one with the other as they do have some shared elements, including the father and mother as well.

(Our Hender Family) (4 Raby Children)

Elizabeth Moon married late to Robert Carswell and had her son John Carswell in 1818 at the age
of about 41 (1818-1777=41) as witnessed by the information of the 1851 census. Jenny Moon married
young, about 22, and had her daughter Jane Stephens at age about 23 (1808-1775). Jane Stephens
married John Raby about the age of 21 (1829-1808) and had her daughter Emmeline Raby about the
age of 24 (1832-1808). John Carswell born 1818 age is rounded reported as 20 in 1841 and wrongly
reported as 22 in 1851, but is more correctly reported in 1861 at age 41. Thus John Carwell marries
in 1860, about age 41 to Emmeline Raby age about 28. They have four children beginning with John
Raby Carswell early in 1861, Jane Stephens Carswell later in 1862, Elizabeth Moon Carswell very
early 1864 and Charles Honey Carswell in 1866. John Carswell then dies and is buried 11 June 1867
at the age of 48. He thereby leaves his wife about 35 with four young children under age 8.

Missing from the relationship pedigree, but talked about before above, is the added relationship of sister Ann Moon, also daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead and her husband Richard Hingston Jr., Surgeon. If one would put sister Ann Moon and her husband Richard Hingston Jr. into the pedigree, then it would be quite easy to see why Richard Hingston is Uncle-in-law to John Carswell and Great Uncle-in-law to Emmeline Raby on their marriage entry when he signed it as being a third Witness to their marriage.
