1 AND Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and
aPotiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the
guard, an Egyptiana, bought him of
the hands of the bIshmeelites, which had brought him down
thither.
2 And the aLORD was with
bJoseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him,
and that the LORD made all that he did to aprosper in his
hand.

1a an officer of Pharaoah, captain of the
guard, an Egyptian Egypt at this time was an international center
and it may well have been currently governed by the 'shepherd kings' of
Semite descend as was Joseph. Therefore the very 'particular' identification
of Potiphar being not only an officer and captian of the guard but also the
fact that he was Egyptian and not some other national descent seems quite
in line and appropriate.
