Old Testament Commentary - Isaiah 10/2 Nephi 20

by Don R. Hender

Nehpi has stated that since we are of the house of Israel that the writings of Isaiah may be likened unto us. Thus, though this records what was understood to be the destruction of Assyria in the days of the Old Testament, it is a type and a parallel to both the temporal and the spiritual destruction of the wicked which is represented by Assyria and the national lands thereof. Further, it does speak that after the destruction is complete that fe people shall be left, in this Isaiah is definently using Assyria as a type of the destruction of the wicked in our day.

20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the ahouse of Jacob, shall no more again bstay upon him that smote them, but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The aremnant shall return, yea, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty Goda.

21a The remnant shall return, yea, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God Notably the remnant here spoken of is that of Israel or the Kingdom of Israel which is the Kingdom of Ephraim, for Judah still remained at this juncture in the history of Israel. The fact that it states that the 'remnant' shall return unto the mighty God and not to there land of inheritance in the Holy Land is also significant, for the land of Joseph which Ephraim and Manasseh hath obtained of the Lord is not in the Holy Land of Palistine but in the New World of the Americas. And that 'return' of 'the remnant' started with the restoration of the Gospel of Christ and when Moses came to the Temple in Kirtland, Ohio and restored the keys of the gathering of Israel. The responsiblity of that gather was 'first' to the remnant of Ephraim and Manasseh, upon whom the responsiblity for filling the covenant of Abraham fell according to the right of the Firstborn of Israel, Ephraim, which Jeremiah 31:9 establishes as being Ephraim and that these promises did remain by thie promised remnant seed of Joseph is subscribed to in that 'the blessings of the fathers did remain those Joseph (D&C 27:10).
