DISTINGUISHED HENDER FAMILIES OF CORNWALL

David de Hendower and Isabella de Cornwall
The Hender family first arrived in Cornwall from Wales when David de Hendower,
the son of Madog de Hendour of Wales, married Isabella
de Cornwall, also listed as Sibilla or Isabel de Cornwall. She was the daughter
of John de Cornwall and his wife Margaret or Margery Trejago. They, David and
Isabella, were married the 8th of July 1343 at Westminster. [Many 'Royal' based
pedigrees give her name as Margaret, likely after her mother Margaret Trejago.]
This 'CORNWALL' family was of the ancestral House of Cornwall which descended from
the Kings of England, namely Henry I, King John, and Richard, King of the Holy
Roman Empire. Isabella was the sole daughter and heir of John de Cornwall and as
such brought to the Hender family the Manor of Court of Brannel by inheritance.
This manor was granted to Richard, Earl of Cornwall and King of the Romans by his
father King John. From thence, via family lines the manor passed to the family of
Cornwall until it was inherited by Isabella the sole heir and daughter of John de
Cornwall. The family of Hender held the manor for about 150 years from the 8 July
1343 wedding until the death of Richard de Hendour in 1495. Whence it pasted out
of the Hender family hands, as Richard only had daughters to inherit.
Madog de Hendower, David de Hendwr's father, was descended from the Welsh Princes
of Powys. As being of royal decent both from Wales and England, the family of
Hendower/Hender in Cornwall was highly revered and distinguished as being so related
to both these Royal houses.
Further, it is Gwerfyl, the sister of this David de Hendwr son of Madog de
Hendower, who married Grono ab Tudor and was the ancestor of the Tudor Royal line
of England. As such, her descendants
became the Tudor Kings of England.
The Coat of Arms held by the Hender family of Court is described as being that of
Hendower, a Welsh family and surviving heirs of Cornwale of Court in Brannel, the
heirs of Hendower in Trewarthian cir. Henry VII: being Arms in azure (blue) a
Lion rampant between an orle of escallops. It was also the same coat of arms
granted to Hender of Bottreaux (or Boscastle) Castle a recognized
younger branch of Hendower. It being the coat of Hender in Molesworth, Robarts,
Heale, and Cotton quarterings. Again, it was the arms granted by Cooke Clar.,
azure orle of escallop shells a lion rampant 'or' or gold, to the Hender family of
Boscastle. (See Boscastle below).
David Hender and his wife Isabella/Margaret de Cornwall had three known children.
They were Gwido de Hendour who married Luch verch Gdronwy, Margaret de Hendour who
married Ieuan ab Iorwerth ab David, and David de Hendour who married
Elizabeth/Isabella Deveros/Devereux about 25 July 1383.
David de Hendower and Elizabeth Deveros
David de Hendower (JR), son of David de Hendower (SR) and Isabella/Margaret
Cornwall evidently took possession of the Cornwall lands of Hendower via Cornwall,
as his family is established in Cornwall. David de Hendower and his believed wife
Elizabeth/Isabella Deveros or Devereux had one son named Thomas de Hendower born
about 1385. This David de Hendower/Hender (JR) died August 1390. His son Thomas de
Hendower married Anne verch Ieuan and became the noted Henders of Brannel.
Thomas de Hendower and Anne verch Ieuan
This Thomas de Hendower was know to be the bearer of the Hender coat of arms which
was likely taken from the Princes of Powys as being a Lion rampant on a field of blue with
escallops or shells. He and his wife had at least three sons. The eldest son and
heir of Brannel was Richard de Hendour who married Katherine Chamberlayne. Ricahrd having
only daughters to carry on his line, Court in Brannel fell out of the Hender
family. The other sons are unknown by name, but appear in the Henders of
Boscastle ancestral chart.
It is likely that one of the sons of Thomas de Hendower/Hender was named John
Hender. This John Hender had a daughter who is recorded as having married Richard
Landgon as listed in the Cornwall Visitations. As to other exact descendant
lines, the Henders of Boscastle show their pedigree as coming from Thomas de
Hendower of Brannel.

with some generations unnamed, do show a descent from the family line above. They follow:

William Hender of Boscastle is the father of John Hender Esq. of Boscastle, which John is, as
was shown in the visitations, descended from Thomas de Hender of Court in
Brannel, though at least two generations of given names are missing. This William Hender
of Boscastle, John's father, is known to have had a sizable family. John Hender Esquire,
the heir, becomes the notable John Hender of Boscastle whose four daughters split the
Hender inheritance between them and their four husbands Molsworth, Heale, Cotton, and
Roberts or Robarts. It is through Frances Hender's marriage to Richard Robarts that the
Hender family once again becomes ancestors of Royalty, this time
via Lady Diana Frances Spencer and her sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
William Hender of Boscastle had other children. There is William's son
Edward Hender who married Elizabeth Trefrie, William's daughter Julyan Hender
who married William Arscott, another son of William was William Hender (JR)
who had at least three known children (John, Degory and Katherine), and William (SR) also
had two other daughters who married a Manington and a Poynter. This is known per John Hender's
will and other sources.
William Hender (JR) had two known sons, John Hender (a sailor) of Flanders,
having removed to there for a time, and Degory Hender. This William Hender's
one known daughter was Katherine Hender who married a Watts.
Which of the 'younger' or non-eldest heir lines the various other families of
Hender descend from; either William Hender of Boscastle or before, is unknown.
Whether such records exist to know is unknown. But circumstance is such, that
from what records there are, to surmise the conclusion stated in the County of
Cornwall text which states that 'younger lines of the Hender survived round
about and in the vicinity of Camelford.' The Hender families are there
historically to prove it. See the Henders of Altarnun,
8-10 miles east of Camelford.
It would be like the Hender family of Boscastle that other 'Younger Lines' of
the Hender family of Cornwall do descend. By 'younger lines' it is ment that
whatever was there to be inherited went out by way of the eldest son and his
or his discendants not producing any male offspring. The 'younger lines' would
be those Hender family younger sons who did not inherit as the eldest son, but
certainly did so continue in their male line offspring, but as non-inheriting
'younger lines', and also therefore not of the 'Gentry' level but of the
'commoner' level.
