H E N D E R of A L T A R N U N
compiled and annotated by Don R. Hender
HENDER - A
distinguished Cornish
family, who are said to have
originated in
Wales. The elder line became extinct during the reign of Henry
VIII but younger branches of the family have abbreviated the name
from its original Hendower to Hender (A dictionary of the Family
Names of the United Kingdom by Mark A. Lower, London, 1860). And of
these younger branches, there are descendants who survived in the
vicinity of Camelford (An Historical Survey of the County of
Cornwall by C. S. Gilbert, London, 1820).
While there is the 'textbook' explanations to the Hender family of Cornwall,
it was more likely the recordings of the record keepers who trunkated the name
down to Hender from its WELSH 'Hendower'. And such continues in the more modern
age to lessen the background of the name in Cornwall as it has been made common
to the point that some do not even take time to recognize the historical texts
concerning its origin, but contrive of their own minds what the name means and
just where it might have come from. Perhaps from other parts of the world a
name such as 'Hinder' or 'Hender' was evolved and means something else, but in
Cornwall, if one does their historical homework, the 'Celtic' name origins from
the Welsh are to be known and understood. After all, the real Cornish folk are
but of the Celtic clans as well.
Ever pushed by the Norsemen, the Romans, the Angles, the Saxons and the Normams of
William I as well, thus ever further into the western lands of what was once all
their own; the Scots, Irish, Welsh and Cornish still have a common bond in language
tracings and heredity as well. Sad to say, not unlike my surname I bear, I too
have become a corruption of mixed family linage, all of the likes I've spoken of
and more.
Within the vicinity of Camelford, surrounds such places of later Hender family
origins as Advent, Bodmin, Altarnun, St. Teath,
St. Minver, St. Mabyn, North Hill,
St. Cleer, and the like; including as well Lanteglos of Camelford itself. All
these have well established families of Hender located in them in the 1700s.
Altarnun, being 8-10 miles east of Camelford,
is the locale of the proven origins
of my Hender line. And while the exact tie is to be established to the elder
Hender lines, the circumstance evidences the connection.
As per the section of Cornwall map shown, my Hender family was four generations
in Altarnun, one generation in Callington,
and two generations in East Looe. Note
the nearness to Camelford that Altarnun is, as well as the historic location of
the Hender site of Boscastle. While I have yet to connect my Hender family
back out of Altarnun where it appears in the records in late 1600s and early
1700s, I have just about identified all the Hender descendants out of Altarnun
and to a number of outside connections. The following link is to such pages
as do review these connections.
Our Hender Family "TRADITIONAL LORE"
My Hender Cousins of
Altarnun
My Hender Family of Altarnun
This first following information has been listed on a Family Search
connection, which seems to be a 'nearness of fit type of possiblity'.
But for the lack of other such confirming information it is not to
be relied upon until such confirming data may come to light. The Altarnun
parish certainly goes back further historically but the available records
do not. So it would seem that this 'near fit' neighboring parish record
of the John Hender and Johane Daw family in Northhill has been 'fitted'
in as the ancestors of Thomas Hender who married Agnes/Ann Evan/Evans next
listed after and who are variously confirmed from that point on. For the sake
of information the John Hender and Johane Daw family will be listed as a
'possiblity yet to be confirmed.'
Possiblity - Unconfirmed OR A 'NEAR FIT?' & MISS!
John Hender & Johane Daw
married 28 April 1670
North Hill, Cornwall, England
Thomas Hender Christened 12 July 1671, North Hill, Cornwall, England
John Hender Christened 22 January 1673, North Hill, Cornwall, England
— Again, due to the 'nearness of fit' some have made the above Thomas Hender (1671)
of North Hill to be the same as the Thomas Hender who married Agnes/Ann Evan/Evans in Altarnun
in 1692. While that may seem possible, it is yet debunked by other on than this 'near fit.' This 'near
fit' possibility becomes questionable when further circumstancial evidence is set forth that
there are two separate Thomas Henders, one of North Hill who married in November, 1692 Mary Foot
and had a family of 6 children in North Hill. The other is Thomas Hender of Altarnun according to
his will, which normally indicates that his parish abode was in Altarnun or even his birth parish.
He married in November, 1692 to Agnes Evan the same month and
year the North Hill Thomas Hender was married to Mary Foot. And He had a family in Atarnun of
2 known sons and possibly others? in the same time frame that the North Hill Thomas Hender was having
6 children with Mary Foot in North Hill. Futher the one Thomas Hender died in North Hill in
1735 and the other Thomas Hender died in Altarnun in 1736. This is the further evidence that
suggests that there were two separate Thomas Henders, one of Altarnun and one of North Hill in
that same time frame. And certainly Thomas Hender of Altarnun and the other Thomas Hender of
North Hill ARE NOT both to be the same Thomas Hender, the son of John Hender and Johane Daw,
the one Thomas Hender of North Hill christened in North Hill in 1671.
Thus, though I have listed the information here, I highly expect that it IS NOT the correct 'near fit'
connection for Thomas Hender of Altarnun who married Agnes/Ann Evan/Evans.
Why is Thomas Hender that married Mary Foot the correct fit? Look no further than the family names
that continued into the Thomas and Mary family in North Hill. There is Johan/Joane Thomas' mother's
name. There is John, Thomas' father's name. There is Ann Thomas' grandmother's name. And of course
Thomas as Thomas' own name's sake. It is one of the common ways they keep their 'family history'
straight. Not to leave one flat footed, I would suggest the following for them to connect to.
John Hender = Anne

In fact they were so prolific in keeping some family names alive that if one child died who was
named by a family name they would name the next same gender child by the dead child's name. So if
an immediate family has more than one John or Maria, look for the prior child to have died before
that same name named child was born.
SPECIAL NOTE: While Ancestry accepts all serious contrived pedigrees and family genealogy, often
those contributed are somewhat flawed containing incorrect information. However, that said and
pointed out, there is a lot of good solid information to draw upon. Here is one such Hender of
North Hill group that seems to be well researhed and thought out and not just thrown together.
Click here to view a well put together pedigree
Now with this first lengthy 'missed connection' I will say that if I were to put a North Hill
parentage to Thomas [Edward] Hender, I would make him the son of Edward Hender of North Hill. Why?
Simply the family names that carried on do not support the above link, but rather it supports the
Edward Hender link if anything at all out of North Hill. And there can even be more evidence to
support it in the matter of burial. First the two sons were named 'Edward' and 'Thomas'. There was
no Edward named in the Thomas Hender and Mary Foot family. Then if you look for the death and
burial of Edward Hender the father in North Hill it is just not there. Where is it possibly? Well
Edward Hender was buried in Altarnun. The only such Edward Hender in the land so to speak at that
time interval. Consider the difference:
Edward Hender = Mrs.

Now that makes good logical sense. Yet still I'm looking for more to conclude upon it. I'm not
just trying to build a pedigree. I'm doing genealogy work for the temple and I would like it
to be correct, not just something to build my ego. The North Hill Thomas Hender who also married
in 1692 a Mary Foot had his own family their with his children name with a number of family
names which solidly identified him as being the son of John Hender and Johane Daw (see furhter above).
FOUND MORE! | Thomas Hender of Altarnun was the son of Edward Hender and NOT a John Hender of North
Hill as prescribed by some as corrected above. Family genealogy, tradition and decendantcy lore supports
that the family was one of the younger Hender family lines that came down from Richard Duke of Cornwall
and King of the Roman Holy Empire at one time whether it be by Edward Hender brother of John Hender of
Boscastle or some other. See Query by Richard
Peter son-in-law of Thomas Hender of Altarnun whose daughter Grace had married Richard
Peter, saddler of Callington.

* NOTE: A frequent commonallity is that, depite their christening name, to identify themselves they
will take up a middle 'family' name such as a parent's given name in order to connect their
family linage.

My 7th Great Grandfather, Thomas Hender, was a Yeoman of the Parish of
Altarnun. At the right is the Altarnun Parish record image of his marriage,
He married Agnes (Ann) Evan on November 29, 1692 in Altarnun, and
he was buried in Altarnun on the 29th of May/June, 1736. Of the marriage entry,
one such transcription of such has gotten it correct as Thomas Hender and
Ann or Agnes Even, while another, that used by the LDS Church IGI, extracted
it from the faded and worn original as Thomas Vender, as they have read the
'H' as being a 'V'. There are no 'Vender' surnamed persons living there, only
Hender. As can be seen here at the right the marriage entry reads, "The 29th
of November was married Thomas Hender and Agnes Evan." The prior information
to the actual single entry reports the year to be 1692.
Thank goodness for multiple records as Thomas Hender's will seems to
clearify everything. His will with a quick
line pedigree provided was written on the
25th day of some month, 1736, some two years after his wife Agnes Evan's
death and burial on 16 January 1734 at Altarnun and one year after his grandson Edward Hender's death,
the son of Thomas Hender and Elizabeth Northy, in 1835 and prior to the
births of two other grandchildren, another son and daughter of Thomas Hender his
son, which children had not been even born at the writing of the will. So those four persons
are not mentioned in his will. The will was
proved the 6th of May, 1737. His known family is as follows:
- Edward Hender was christened in Altarnun on the 23rd of December,
1693; who married, had five children, and was also of Altarnun.
- Thomas Hender possibly christened 20th February, 1695 with the Parish
clerk listing the father's name as Edward rather than Thomas. The readable
part of the record states: "February 20th Thomas Son of Edw--- Hender ... ".
February 20th Thomas the son of Ed'+++' Hender of Altarnun
Thomas was referenced in his father Thomas' will
and he married 1st Elizabeth Northy by whom he had his 6 recorded children (see next).
In the will of this Thomas Hender (I) is mentioned his son Thomas Hender, and his
grandchildren, the children of Thomas Hender (II), being Thomas Hender (age 9),
John Hender (age 4), and Ann Hender (age 6). Also mentioned is Elizabeth (Northy)
Hender mother of Ann, Thomas (III), and John. His grandson Edward Hender by
Thomas (II) is not mentioned as Edward was born and died in 1735 prior to his
grandfather's death and will. Neither is William Hender or Elizabeth Hender of
Thomas (II) mentioned, as they not having been born prior to June 1736, the burial
date of Thomas Hender (I).

NOTE: The people and the family are correct. For some reason the dates attributed to the IGI
extractions and the 'new' OPC transcriptions do not alway agree. This may be caused by
reference to the hard to read origianl parish records as compared to a reliance upon
the Bishop's Transcriptions. Each different transcription set, IGI, Philmores, Bishops,
etc. seem to have differences in them. The best is to connect families and match the
people thus rather than to make a different person everytime a transcription may not
agree with another's rendition of the same thing.

My 6th Great Grandfather was Thomas Hender, Yeoman of Altarnun. He married 1st
Elizabeth Northy on the 13th of June 1727 by whom he had all 6 known children.
Elizabeth died and was buried 20 July 1741 at Altarnun and was noted as Thomas
Hender's wife. Three of Thomas' and Elizabeth's children were mentioned in the
will of father Thomas Hender (I). After his wife's death in 1841, Thomas (II)
married a second wife on the 8th of May, 1743. She was Ebbet (Ibbet)
Edgcoumbe the widow of Christopher Edgecoumbe and daughter of William Skantellbury
and Skantellbury's wife Lovday, being christened the 4th of April 1695 and she died
and was buried 6 Jan 1771 at Altarnun at age 74 as 'Ibbet Hendar'. Thomas Hender (II)
was died and was buried 7 July 1767 at Altarnun. The children of this Thomas Hender
(II) and Elizabeth Northy are as follows:
- Thomas Hender (III) was christened 3 September 1727/8 Altarnun and buried 18 July
1743 at Altarnun about the age of 15, which burial record notes him as being the son
of Thomas Hender. Thus the eldest son became John Hender, the 3rd child.
- Agnes (Ann) Hender was christened 4 January 1730/1, spinster, and
buried 11 March 1767.
- John Hender christened 25 February 1732/3 (b 1732), married Grace Liskey
(Luskey) of North Hill 12 December 1752, and was buried 20 February
1767. He is my ancestor who had 4 recorded children.
- Edward Hender christened 2 June 1735 Altarnun and buried 25 August 1735 at
Altarnun and was noted as being the son of Thomas Hender in the Parish record.
- William Hender christened 5 October 1736 Altarnun, married Elizabeth
Venning 6 May 1764, and was buried 20 February 1767.
- Elizabeth Hender christened 11 June 1739 Altarnun, married John Venning
2 November 1761.
All of their children but Elizabeth who married John Venning died before their father Thomas
Hender (II): Thomas (bur. 18 July 1843), Agnes/Ann (bur. 11 Mar 1767, John (bur. 20 Feb 1767),
Edward (bur. 25 Aug 1735), William (bur. 20 Feb 1767) and 3 of those children preceded their
father Thomas in that same year of 1767. The 'Elizabeth Hender' who died that same year of 1767,
5 Feb. likely could have been Elizabeth [Venning] Hender the wife of William Hender. Thus the
will of Thomas Hender (II) mentions his wife
Ebbet, daughter Elizabeth wife of John Venning, his daughter-in-law Grace Hender the wife
of John Hender, and various of his grandchildren, the children of John and Grace Hender. So
it does mention all four children of John Hender and Grace Luskey as being Thomas
Hender's grandchildren, they being Elizabeth, Mary, William, and Thomas.
Just what occured in the year 1767 is not know for sure. But it did take the
lives of Thomas Hender (II) being buried 7 July 1767, Agnes/Ann Hender his
spinster daughter being buried 11 March 1767, his son and my 5th Great
Grandfather John Hender being buried 20 February 1767, and his son William
Hender being buried 20 February 1767 the same day as my ancestor John Hender.
This just about wiped out the family except for grandchildren, the stepmother
Ebbet Hender, the inlaw marriage wives, and the one daughter Elizabeth who was
married to Venning. The other children had died earlier in 1735 (Edward) and
1743 (Thomas). This is reflective of who is mentioned in Thomas Hender's will.

My 5th Great Grandfather was John Hender of Altarnun. He married Grace (Liskey)
Luskey of North Hill. She was the daughter of
William Luskey and Mary Barriball.
John's and Grace's Hender family is well referred to in both William Luskey's will and his widowed wife
Mary Luskey's will; as well
as their spinster daughter's will, Mary Luskey, the sister of Grace
(Luskey) Hender. William Luskey's will names all four children of their
daughter Grace and John Hender, being William Hender, Elizabeth Hender, Mary
Hender, and my 4th Great Grandfather Thomas Hender. The will of Mary
(Barriball) Luskey names her daughter Grace Hender and her two sons William
Hender and Thomas Hender my ancestor.
As to the will of Mary Luskey, spinster and sister of Grace (Luskey) Hender,
Mary Luskey left a will written in 1784 after both Grace and her husband John
Hender Had died. Thus in her will there is only mention of the two sons of
John and Grace, her nephews William Hender and Thomas Hender; this Thomas
Hender being my 4th Great Grandfather. Mary also names Thomas' first three
children in her will, Elizabeth, Mary, and Grace, her great nieces.
John Hender died young and evidently suddenly in 1767, as
he left no will and only an Admon.
Bond bearing his wife Grace Hender's name. He was buried 20
February 1767 at Altarnun. His wife Grace Luskey Hender did leave a
will dated 1780.
She was buried at Altarnun, 20 June 1780 at age 50.
The children of John and Grace are as follows:
- Thomas Hender was christened 26 February 1755/4 (dup rec'd?) in Altarnun.
He married Sarah Adams on 20 March 1776, and was buried the 23 of June
1791. They had 7 recorded children, and this is my ancestor.
- William Hender was christened 22 November 1757 in Altarnun. He
married Annabella Edgcombe on 2 May 1781, and was buried 27 August
1818 at age 61. He had 3 recorded children Catherine, Annabella, and William.
[Note: This William Hender married his 'step-cousin', the granddaughter of
his step-grandmother Ebbot (Edgcombe nee Skantellbury) Hender—see
link.]
- Elizabeth Hender was christened 28 November 1760 in Altarnun. She
was a spinster who left a will
mentioning Thomas Hender
her brother and his infant daughters Elizabeth and Mary. She also mentions
William Hender her brother who was not married yet, and her sister
Mary Hender. She was buried 10 January 1781 at age 20.
- Mary Hender was christened 16 January 1765 in Altarnun. She was likely
buried 28 March 1783, age 19
The will of Grace Hender of Altarnun mentions her son Thomas Hender and his infant
children Elizabeth, and Mary. She mentions her daughters Elizabeth Hender and
Mary Hender, and she mentions her son William Hender all not married yet.

^^ This is Jenny Peter, sister of the Peter brothers who married Mary and Grace Hender, sisters
of John Hender. At ages of 54/55 and 43 respectively, John and Jenny appear to have had no
offspring. Jenny was christened 13 March 1798 at North Hill, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth
Peter of Illand. This Jenny had first married Edward Garland and secondly married John Hender.

My 4th Great Grandfather is Thomas Hender, Yeoman of Altarnun, the son of
John Hender and Grace Luskey/Liskey. He was christened the 26th of February,
1755 in Altarnun. He married Sarah Adams on the 20th of March, 1776. Sarah
Adams of Laneast was the daughter of
John Adams
and his second wife Sarah Bath.
Thomas and Sarah had 7 recorded children. Thomas
was buried 23 June 1791 in Altarnun.
His will
mentions 6 of his 7 children, his wife Sarah, and his brother William Hender.
Sarah [Adams] Hender died in April of 1829 at age 75 and was buried at Altarnun on
21 April 1829. Their 7 known children are:
- Elizabeth Hender was christened in Altarnun 27 April 1777. She died
after her father's will of 1791. Her grave stone is at Altarnun Parish, which
lists her death as August 20, 1796 at age 19 and buried 21 August 1796.
- Mary Hender was christened 13 July/23 November 1779 at Altarnun. She
married John Peter(s) on 28 September 1803.
- Grace Hender was christened 23/5 June 1781 at Altarnun. She
married Richard Peter.
- Thomas Hender was christened in Altarnun 27 April 1783 Privately also 20 May 1783 Publicly. He
married Jenny Peter on 10 July 1817.
- John Hender was christened 23 November 1785. Who he
married first is considered to be Mary Smeeth his half cousin of St Gennys. John Hender is the Sadler who
who as a 'widower' married Jenney Garland nee PETER in 1840. Yet it seems doubtful whether he had any children
in his first marriage or with Jenny as none are ever found. Certainly with Jenny being 43, and he 54/55, there
is the logic which favors no children there and the Mary Smeeth's early death and perhaps nearness of kin seems
to have left no children there either.
- William Hender, my ancestor, was christened 9 April 1788 in Altarnun. He
married Elizabeth Rowe in Callington on 10th of August, 1811. He died on 5th
of August 1848 in Venterdon, Stoke Climsland, Cornwall at age 60 per his
death Certificate. His will recorded him as being of Altarnun.
- Annabella Hender was christened 6 April 1790 at Altarnun. She died in March 1791 before
her date of burial on the 31 March 1791 at Altarnun. As a result of her infant death she is
the one child of this family who is not named in her father's 1791 will which he wrote on
4 May 1791. This fact self verifies that Annabella Hender, daughter of Thomas Hender is the
child's whose burial is recorded 31 March 1791. Thomas Hender's father, John Hender, died in
his mid 30s and with Thomas Hender being 'weak of body' and his youngest child dying he then
puts to writing his will even though he is only in his mid 30s. A step will taken as
he is dead & buried come June of 1791.

My 3rd Great Grandfather was William Hender of Altarnun, Clock and Watchmaker
(See: Clock Example).
His Christian baptism was performed 9 April 1788 at Altarnun, the son of Thomas Hender and
Sarah Adams, but of course his actual birth date can only be speculated. His
marriage date is 27 July 1811 at Callington as found on the Callington Heritage
Centre. I first found it reported in the Royal Cornwall Gazette. There
it states they were married the 10th of August, 1811, or maybe that was the date
of the news paper or perhaps between 'band' and 'marriage'? Other than that Miss
ROWE's residence was in Callington, which is confirmed in the Callington parish
information. Nothing else is given in the Gazette. The parish record listed William
as a sojourner, I suppose since he was 'in from Altarnun'. And Elizabeth Rowe was
listed as being of the parish, meaning she was of Callington. In William Hender's will
he states that 'Elizabeth Rowe' is his wife. Why he lists her maiden name
I am not sure. His will refers to
himself as of Altarnun and also refers to his four [surviving] children,
Amelia Olver nee Hender, Louisa Hender, William Worth Hender, and my ancestor
Thomas Rowe Hender. William's death certificate, dated 5 August 1848, lists
him as 60 years old [which means accordingly he was born between 6 August
1787 to 4 August 1788]. It also states he was a Watch and Clock Maker and
his 'houses, gardens, orchards and etc. were then located at Venterdon in
the parish of Stoke Climsland. And that is were they are both buried at the
Stoke Climsland Parish according to the parish record. It reports Elizabeth
as being buried 14 February 1850 at age 57, which would yield a birth date
between about February 1792 to February 1793. William was buried on the 8th
of August 1848, three days after his death on August 5th.
Note: There were at least four William Henders about this area at this time, not
counting the many other in other parish areas. There was William Bury Hender the Doctor
whose father was William Hender the surgeon. There was a William Hender a school teacher.
There was a William Hender who was an Inn Keeper, and there was my third great grandfather
who was a watch and clock maker. My 2nd great grandfather was also a watchmaker, Thomas
Rowe Hender. That makes you wonder about the 'Thomas Rowe' name combination. Oh and
Thomas Rowe Hender's brother, son of William Hender the clock and watchmaker, was another
William, a William Worth Hender. Let's see, how many Williams was that?

Today there is genuine hope that the age long riddle of finding Elizabeth Rowe's family.
She was of Callington, living in Callington, which seems to actually have been between
where she was born back in Altanun and where her siblings were baptized in Stoke Climsland.
And that would likely be why she and William Hender ended up living their in the
community of Stoke Climsland upon that one road community called Venterdon. The story of
here parentage has a sorted side, which has seemed to obsured her family ties for all
these years. That set of family ties and relationships are being put together of a
Rowe Family Page that can be seen and considered by clicking
the link.
All there seems to fit and account for the obcured nature of finding her family. And it
answers a number of questions, that without putting such together, would have just
continued to have gone unknown. This following previous statement of 'dispear' at the
long attempts of the search will be left remaining here for a while, but for now they
will be set in [brakets] as an indication that it is no longer the case as the family
really does not seem to have been found.
[[[Dispite attempts at 'near' perhaps matches, there lingers on the mystery of
which Elizabeth Rowe is the right Elizabeth Rowe. It may be likely that it will
go unsoved until all parish records are transcribed. Just recently I've seen a change
from the 'Mevagissey' to the Altarnun Elizabeth Rowe whose baptism date is in 1794.
It is correct that Elizabeth Hender nee Rowe's burial record records her as age 57 in
1850 with a thus calculated birth age 1792/3. That is if the death age is her correct age.
With the recently released parish records of Callington by the Callington Heritage
Society, the long awaited marriage date has been give and that was in 1811. This would
mean that Elizabeth Rowe would be a minor at her marriage date based on her burial age.
Possible and a bit of romance with marrying a Altarnun 'hometown' girl if she is the
daugher of William Rowe and Catherine who had their daughter Elizabeth Rowe'baptism
put off until 1794. Not impossible, but what happens when another set of additional
parish registers come to the fore front with still other possibilities? I've yet seen
enough evidence to make that call as other have so done. And I've been finding a lot of
errors in my Hender and Moon family lines which other have jump to too earily without
the full understanding. Ancestry.com still displays that the medical doctor William
Bury Hender is the son of my 3rd great grandfather William Hender the watchmaker instead
of his true father, a cousin William Hender who is a surgeon himself. For me the degree
of confidence to call the William and Catherine connection to Elizabeth Rowe is still
not there.]]]

The Banter of Chat Rooms Exasperates
And the degree of difficulty to give the correct answer but to such proprietary services which
extact $$ to 'subscribe' to is maddening. One participant states a presumption of death between
1830 to 1841 because they cannot find someone who they think is suppose to be in and stay in
Callington their entire life on the 1841 census. So they must be dead. 'Look up his death between
1830 to 1840,' they plead. Well people do move about and he nor his wife are dead before 1848. I've
had his official copy of his death certificate out of England for decades. He died in 1848, I have
the death certificate itself in hand to prove it, and the wife died in 1850. But I have to joint a
a genealogical 'chat room of sorts' to share what I know?
Also, they are both found in 'Venterdon', not Callington or even Stoke Climsland, depending on how the
census is accessed and indexed. And there is always the matter of getting birth dates misconstrude
because one does not know the 'rules of rounding' used on the 1841 census. Venterdon is a 'one street'
hamlet in the 1841 census that begins with the household of William Werring part way down page 9, or on
the page before that at the bottom with a 75 year old Grace Green, a charwoman. Page 9 is the first page
of the two page set of page 9 and 10, which set is numbered '6' by the dispalying index, that is according
to the two page sets by which my source has them indexed. The one street 'hamlet' of Venterdon ends on the
two page set index numbered '8', which actually ends part way down page 14, the second page of that two
page set of 13 and 14.
This is the actual hand written census record. And the next 'division' of the census is then labeled
Stokeclimsland which begins with the household of William Butcher. The last household in the Venterdon
listing just happens to be that of William Hender, age 50, Watchmaker and Elizabeth Hender also age 50
as of the 1841 census recording. But then you have to consider that is according to the 'rounding down' of
the considered 'adult' ages beginning with '15'. The ages are supposed to be rounded down to the next level
of counting by 5s. That is Willian and his apparent wife Elizabeth could actually be any age from 50 to
54. That is if the ages are given and written correctly by the census process. So William being listed
at age 50 doesn't mean he was born either in 1790/91. What it does indicate is that he was born any time
from 1785 to 1791, which includes the christening date of 1788. Now of course it also helps if you
understand the concepts of townships and boroughs as well, because while the listings of Venterdon
and Stokeclimsland and any number of such small little community villages can be grouped in a 'Township'
and/or 'Parish'. And in this case that Township is Stokeclimsland Township, not to be confused with
the smaller section of which is Stokeclimsland 'rural'. As to what the borough is, that's probably Launceston,
or it could be Callington or even something else which is the current flavor of the decade. If it seems
like I'm drawing this out, well then of course I am. And there is any number of ways that such a finding
or listing may then be listed or given by your kindly genealogists. That is if they can get the decade of
death correct in the first place. Well here is the copy of the census listing in 1841 of William Hender,
Watchmaker and his wife Elizabeth [Rowe] Hender.
Now the 'Do' in the place column is 'Ditto' which has been 'Do' per each head of household since page 9 of set
6 where the place location was given as being 'Venterdon'. So in effect William Hender and wife Elizabeth are
the last household on the street depending upon the beginning and/or ending perspective of that one 'street'
community. But I guess that depends on whether you are coming or going. Notice they didn't bother to list
the 'City or Borough and I don't even want to begin with 'Enumeration Schedule.' and what the number 20
represents at this point. But it does look that most everyone was born in the county except William Butcher
the Tailor who was not born in the county of Cornwall in this case, whereeverelse he may have been born. Well
this is what the 1841 census can tell us. Parish registers are another color of beast and I'll just provide
the 'transcribed' summary listing of the death burial records for William Hender and his wife Elizabeth Rowe
next from the 'Callington Heritage Centre'. But when you look at the summary, remember what being of 'Venterdon'
can actually mean. (See A Tribute to Venterdon).
_________________________________________________________________________________
| Parish | Event | Firstname | Surname | Date | Year | Age | Notes |
| Stokeclimsland | Burial | William | HENDER | 08-Aug | 1848 | 60 | Venterdon |
| Stokeclimsland | Burial | Elizabeth | HENDER | 14-Feb | 1850 | 57 | Venterdon |
| Stokeclimsland | Burial | John | HENDER | 25-Mar | 1852 | 2 | Holmbush |
In short here, there are at least two separate Hender families living in the Parish of Stokeclimsland. And as
can be seen the more accurate age at burial does match with William Hender's age when compared with his date
of baptism or christening (1848-60=1788). It also suggests a more accurate dating for the birth/christening date
of Elizabeth Rowe as being (1850-57=1793 or 1792). Notes clearly a align William with place of residence and
likely site of death. These are potentially more accurate age dates at time of burial than the 'rounded' 1841
census date, and they should be looked to in seeking the person's time of birth and/or christening. And it
should narrow the search for Elizabeth's parentage by illiminating some previous 'guesses'. But even then the
records to date don't seem to be adequately complete to determine such, she being stated as of Callington and
all per the couple's marriage record of 1811 in Callington, also part of the Callington Heritage Centre provided
transcription of records.
Well so much for the 'Banter of Genealogy Subscribe to Chat Rooms'. Just don't get me started on the endless
useless and misleading 'chatter' concerning the absolutely wrong death date attributed to Thomase Rowe Hender,
my 2nd great grandfather, that goes on and on about what some foolish folly has assigned his death date as being
—the date of his oldest's son's marriage just because Thomas Rowe Hender is listed as his son's father on
the marriage entry as having been 'previously' deceased well before and prior to
that marriage date. The wasted hours lost in such fruitless and incorrect determinations!!! But I guess it is
the 'mis-direction' that makes such 'tick' and continue on.

William Hender and Elizabeth Rowe's children are:
Exciting News A
fairly
recent released transcription—[search for 'Hender' under 'Search Our Data]—of Callington and surrounding areas
exists that reveals much about the HENDER family including some 'NEW' children for William Hender and Elizabeth
Rowe Hender and the marriage date of William and Elizabeth.
- Elizabeth Rowe Hender was Christened/baptism 22
May 1812 at Callington. Saddly it appears that she died at the age of 4 and
was buried 4 June 1816 at Callington. If not, there is some later reason why
she is not mentioned in William Hender's will.
- Amelia Hender was born in 1813 and was Christened/baptism on 12 September
1813 at Callington. She married Richard Olver on 3 March 1835 and has 10
known children, the eldest threechildren's birth certificates I have.
- Louisa Hender was born in 1815 and was Christened/baptism 4 June 1815 at
Callington. She was a spinster and groucer. She died 24 July 1889 and is
buried at St. Martin by Looe on 26 July 1889, age 74. She is closely
associated with her sister Amilia Olver's and Thomas Rowe Hender's families
in East Looe and is found on the Census records there.
- William Hender was born calculated 1819 with his
baptism recorded/transcribed under 'Ender' on 20 Jun 1819 on the Callington
Heritage web site and there is his recoreded burial as William Hender, age 1,
in Callington on 29 March 1821.
- William Worth Hender was born about 1824 though the current Callington
record shows no Christening/baptism for him. He married Elizabeth
Tresize or Trezise, daughter of Philip Tresize on the 4th of March, 1845 per
their marriage certificate. They had one known daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hender.
William Worth Hender died in Callington, 9 September 1884 at age 60 [Due to
William Worth Hender's varying age upon various public records, including upon
4 census records, it is determined now that William likely was born about 1822
and that his death age was not given accurately. Thus he has been moved to being
older than Thomas Rowe Hender, his brother].
- Thomas Rowe Hender, my ancestor, according to verious records was born
about 1822? in Callington yet his Christening/baptism there occured 3 October
1824. He married Marianna (variously spelled) Trout daughter of Philip Trout
and Susanna Moon 6th January 1844. They had five known children all with birth
certificates. Thomas Rowe Hender likely died between 1855 and 1860.
- John Hender There is a Christening/baptism for
John Hender to William and Elizabeth Hender, most likely another child of
this family. He was Christened/baptised on 17 December 1827 and appears to
have died in March of 1830 as he was buried at the age of 2 on the 17 March
1830.
William Hender had inheritied no lands in his father's
will, but was given a large sum of money (100 pounds). He apparently used the
funds to learn the skills of clock and watchmaking, and to relocate from
Altarnun to Callington. Callington was a township more suited to the sell of
clocks and watches than the very rual Altarnun.

* [Note: Some, without knowing where the precise date came from, report that Thomas Rowe
Hender died on 23 April 1877, which is absurd. That precise date is the date of son
Philip Trout Hender upon whose marriage certificate Thomas Rowe Hender is stated to be
deceased—NOT that he died on the day of his son's marriage but
that he was dead and deceased prior to the marriage of course. But some jump at any
such date just to promote themselves as 'in the know' when others know not. But in the
end they are exposed for their foolishness.]
My 2nd Great Grandfather was Thomas Rowe/Row Hender Watchmaker. He was born in
Callington per the Census records about 1822. We may presume Thomas is
deceased by 1860 perhaps inconjunction with the death of his son Harry for
Maryaina is the one who registers the birth, whereas Thomas did for the previous
child, their son Thomas.
MariAnna as just Mary, his wife, is on the 1861 census married to Robert Wynhall with
Philip Hender, Ellen Hender and William Hender being listed there as sons
and dauther inlaw to the head of house Robert. Thomas Rowe Hender married Mary
Aina Trout on 6 January 1844 at the age of 21 at
Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. They had now known five
children as follows:
- Philip Trout Hender born 17 July 1844, East Looe. He and his living siblings were
belatedly christened together 6 August 1856 at Looe (Chapel?). He married
Grace (Chapman) Chipman on 23 April 1877. They had one son who is my ancestor.
- Ellen Hender born 8 August 1847, East Looe, Liskeard. She was belatedly christened
6 August 1856 at Looe. She married James Toms on 27 June 1868 and they had children
(see TOMS-HENDER 2 family.)
She was buried as Ellen Toms at St. Martin by Looe on 20 NOvember 1904, age 57.
- William Hender born 1 September 1850 East Looe, christened 6 August 1856 at Looe
with family. He married Selina Toms on 5 October 1878 and they had six known Hender
children (see TOMS-HENDER 1 family.)
- Thomas Hender born 1 November 1852, East Looe and died at the age 15mths on 26 February 1854 of Purpura
Hemorrhagica, and was buried 1 March 1854, Martin by Looe, St. according to parish record - (certificate infor: died 1 qtr.
1855 Liskeard [District], Cornwall, England - Vol. 5C page 63 source 150.C)
(certificate infor: born 4th qtr 1852 Liskeard - Vol. 5C page 79 source 120.A-Certified copy now in hand.)
- Harry Hender born 23 December 1855, East Looe. He was christened 6 August 1856 at Looe. Harry died of
Scarlatina on 12 October 1858, just about three years after his birth.
Mary Anna (Trout) Hender apparently remarries Robert Wynhall and has at least two
more children by him; a Robert Pope Wynhall, and a John P. Wynhall. The Hender
children are part of this household on the 1861 Census record.

~ Great Grandparents ~
My Great Grandfather was Philip Trout Hender born 17 July 1844 in East Looe.
He was a fisherman of East Looe, Cornwall, England. He married Grace
Chapman/Chipman the daughter of William
Chipman and Fanny
Collett on 23 April 1877
at East Stonehouse, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. They had one son, Albert
Hender. Philip Trout Hender died 28 August 1878. Grace was just 21 years old and
with an infant of less than one year of age.
- Albert Hender was born on he 21st of January 1878 in East Looe, Cornwall,
England. He was christened/baptized 27 February 1878 at Looe. Albert Hender
Married Laura Antoinette Dibble. They had
two children. Albert died 27 September 1914.
Grace remarried William Collins. They had some children in Cornwall and sailed
to America and ended up in Ontario, Canada where they had more children. Grace
is recored as having worked in Leeds, but I must presume not Leeds, England
of Yorkshire; or Leeds in Utah; but Leeds in Ontario, Canada near their home
in Forest, Lambton, Ontario, Canada.
