The General Authorities Speak
Cumorah Is Cumorah

compiled by Don R. Hender

So far we have used scripture and revelation in the 'case' of Cumorah and Cumorah. Now we turn to the statements by General Authorities on the matter. While many of these representations for various 'authorities' could and likely should be included in the area of revelation or at least personal revelation, since they are associated with individuals, they will be listed under their personal names. Also, though it is realized that Lucy Mack Smith in not a Church General Authority, what more appropriate, authoritative, and knowledgeable person other than the Prophet Joseph Smith's own mother, who lived the history with her son, can be found as a sound reference?

It should be noted, while not every authority's statement upon the case of Cumorah and Cumorah can be produced as not all published. And it is only the published ones that are here presented. Further, even those who did publish, they would not feel challenged to restate the obvious. To the General Authorities, Cumorah had always been Cumorah, and no further clarification was needed. When they spoke of the Hill Cumorah, they knew of what they spoke and they could just say 'Cumorah' without having to couch it in a defense statement defining what they meant. Yet, by representative consensus of the persons here listed and presented, it may be quite logically concluded that such represented the general consensus of the general population of the entire Church during the times of these authorities. And while many authorities of the Church refrain from making their current belief of the matter known, it should by no means be considered that such is caused by their disagreement with earlier authorities on the matter. More likely, their refrain from statement likely either rests on 'not knowing' or in being consistent with the Church's current position of not officially providing geography to the Book of Mormon.

Why More Are Not Listed
Dr. Hugh Nibley & Dr. Sydney B. Sperry

The last two 'authorities' are not of those of the General Authorities of the Church. Yet at least at one juncture in their lives, they did write and speak for the Church in an offical capacity. Perhaps some experience with such is why now the bulk of the manuals of the Church are no longer attributed to a singular person but put forth as a publication of the Church with no such stated single author.
