H E N D E R F A M I L Y o F E G L O S H A Y L EEGLOSHAYLE: (lavender parish on map) The name Egloshayle is Cornish for 'Church on an estuary' eglos(church} plus heyl(estuary). This parish is by the Camel river, south of Wadebridge, and contains the villages of Washaway, Ford, Sladesbridge, Gonvena, Bodieve and Egloshayle. Egloshayle was a Bronze Age settlement and a river port; it was also a trading port rivalling Padstow a little over five miles down river. The trade consisted of tin, clay, wool, corn and vegetable crops. It is now a busy rural village. A bridge which links it to the town of Wadebridge was originally built by a 15th century vicar who considered the ferry crossing too hazardous. Because it was built on sand it was continually being washed away by the tide, but the problem was eventually solved by building the foundations of the bridge on bales of wool.
ST ISSEY: (green parish on map) St Issey is across the
inlet from St Minver parish and just down the river Camel from Egloshayle.
The tide runs up the river inlet and back and was once used to run a 'sea
powered' grist mill. Its early seatlement dates to the iron age and there
are a number of archaeological sites within the parish. A house adjacent
to one of the mills is the home of Dr. Marley who was a close friend of
Charles Dickens. Dickens used his friend's name the character in 'A
Christmas Carol'.

But that baptism of that date is for another Catherine, daughter of John and Mary Hender of Lanivet, and seems to be such as confussion with the Catherine Hender above daughter of William and Joanne baptism recorded at Egloshayle. Perhaps sorting Catherine baptism by computer and the coming out on the list side by side and thus visually confused like on an IGI record. William and Grace Hender Family of St IsseyIt is an online web site from which I take this additional information to link this family in Egloshayle two gerneration back to a William Hender and then a Nicholas Hender. (See @http://www.familyorigins.com/users/c/a/r/Jeanann-W-Carhart/FAMO1-0001/d9.htm#P21439) I will rely on that for what I present here until and unless I find otherwise. The nearest fit for Grace Tom is currently that of Grace Tom whose baptism is recorded on 1 November 1709 at Helland and whose parents are Giles Tom and his wife Joan. Only the one baptism is found recorded presently anywhere in Cornwall.
