Launceston - St Thomas - St Stephens
& St Mary Magdalene Families
prepared, compiled and annotated by Don R. Hender
In the world of Family and Genealogy
research 'error' is always a possibility. That is what makes carelessly
falsifying or presenting someone's genealogy, with little care taken, so bad.
Many are influenced by the false assumptions that if in print, particularly
on the 'internet', for then it must be so. - NOT - That's what is frustrating
about a number of my own family connections as presented on the
internet—THEY ARE JUST NOT SO. Even public records are not
free from such careless errors. This first grouping of the family of John and
Wilmont Hender is marked by a number of such 'errors' and careless possible
assumptions.
I will quickly enumerate them as to attempt to not detract from the actual
presentation below. Number 1: Census records, though a good
source are not always an accurate source. An extraordinary number of person's
ages are listed with an obviously too frequently occurring 'rounding error'.
Many person's age dates, particularly in the 1841 census, are rounded or
'guessed' to the nearest 'ten' or 'five', the father William Hender is 20,
his wife Elizabeth is 25, the servant is 15, Wilmont the grandmother is 55,
Henry and Thomas are both 20 and Mary Stacey is 15. This continued consistancy
of the listing of ages either by 'rounding' or guessing is overwhelmingly
apparent the more one becomes familiar with and uses the 1841 census*. Thus
'real ages' don't often match and not just because the census taker was told
wrongly. Number 2: Careless parish clerks often error in
recording events. A note to that effect is given in connection with Elizabeth
Hender's 1810 Christening. According to the note, Elizabeth at a later age
came herself back to the parish clerk and did sware that she was NOT
Christened as 'Grace', this seems to have plagued her as she can be found
referenced upon occasion by either name 'Grace' or 'Elizabeth'. Along with
this 'clerical' error area, on Thomas Hender's and Henry Hender's same day
Christenings, the father's name was listed as Henry and not John. That error
or even if its a modern transcription error, can be found on the internet
even today. Number 3: Christening or baptism dates ARE NOT
birth dates. Some careless genealogists will list them as such and just
using their work without varifications tend to perpetuate their careless
error. 'Henry and Thomas' are NOT twins even though the rounding 'errors'
of the 1841 census seem to present us with many such situations and even
if parish Christening records give the same dates, does not mean automatic
twins. There are other later census records, and other records as well, which
disprove the 'twin' dates of the 1841 census and can also over rule such
baptisms are done on the same date for children born on different dates. I
first had seen the same in respect to my own ancestor's family of Thomas Rowe
Hender, whose three of his five children were all baptized/Christened on the
same date on the Looe Parish record and I have each of their birth certificates
which show they are not triplets. I'll stop the 'lesson' there for now.
*[Note: A 'rule of thumb' was in force in the 1841 Census to 'round down' or
report an adult's age beginning with age 15 to the next lowest increment of '5'.
That is a person 15-19 was to be reported as age 15, 20-24 as 20, 25-29 as 25,
30-34 as 30, 35-39 as 35, 40-44 as 40, 45-49 as 45, 50-54 as 50, 55-59 as 55,
60-64 as 60, 65-69 as 65, 70-74 as 70, 75-79 as 75, 80-84 as 80, 85-89 as 85 and
so forth. However anyone who has used the 1841 Census will note that in some cases
a more exact appearing age such as 23 or 77 will be given. But the majority of
the adult ages in increments of '5' atest that in 'most' cases the run of thumb
was applied. Still as human error is what it is, that still does not gaurantee
an accurate age on the census. From decade to decade some people's age seems to
'rollercoaster' and often for no logical reason.]

[Note: Often there are duplicates in parish events occuring from such as duplicate
recordings in nearby parishes or at least attributed to such, duplicate record sources
such as the Bishop's transcripts and various 'copies', and then there are various sets
of 'transcriptions' which have been accumulated at various times and they even present
some comflicts in data and one often shares such information that the other does not.
Thus careful and reasonable care ought to be exercised in sifting through such to attempt
to ascertain just what is the real truth of such matters.]

One of the best and most used sources for genealogical
information is the parish records and the transriptions
of them. I will use such a collection of transcribed
information in attempting to create a family unit for
Christopher and Dorothy Hender of Launceston. NOTE: on
Ancestry.com one pedigree misses their son Christopher
and puts his death date as the father's death date.

There appears to be a concurrent Hender family of
William and Ann Hender. Interestingly there appears to
be an extreme coincidence or a duplication of records.
Two William Hender entries for the exact same date with
the same named parents. One at St Thomas and one at St
Stephens.

St. Stephens Church by Launceston
|
Launceston has three closely located parish churches.
St. Mary Magdalene, the actual Launceston church, and St. Thomas and
St. Stephens which are 'by' Launceston. When parishes are near by
each does not always have a current operating clergy and what clergy there
is, is often split or 'rotated'. This may have been the case with the two
William Hender
records. The Christening happened at the neighboring church and was entered
there but the clergyman also entered it in the 'home' parish where he knew
the family to actually reside. Fortunately the clergyman was careful to enter
the same date. Often this is the cause of a Christening being entered on two
separate dates one or more weeks apart, yet for the same person and event. Of
course there is always the other possiblity, a more modern transcription error.
|
There is a third seemingly relevant family in the area of Launceston in
the parish records. And that is the family of John Hender, or John and
Margery Hender. A decade apart but still near enough for John, William and
Christopher to have been siblings. But that is another exploration. (see Lanteglos/Camelford)

In reviewing the three likely Parish family candidates with the census records
compilation below, it seems we have a 'winner'. It does appear that the
John Hender who married Wilmont Stacey is the son of Christopher Hender and
his wife Dorothy. The John Hender, father of Nicholas Clode Hender and
Elizabeth, was historically active and can be deduced to be John Clode Hender
who was in support at at least in sympathy with the Wesleyan prodestant group.
Whether he had but two children or because of his affiliation with the
Wesleyans his other children are not recorded in the Church of England parish
records is not know to me. But there is evidence and reason to believe that
he is the same John Clode Hender of Advent, Christened there 18 May 1761, the
son of William Hender and Elizabeth Clode. His ADMON. is dated 18 June 1790
and give to his 'relict' Margery which match who his wife is here. John Clode
Hender's father William Hender was son of Nicholas Hender and his wife mary
of Lanteglos Camelford Christened 6/10/1727. There is a further connection
to Lanteglos Camelford as William Tanner Hender, who married Mary Pearse at
St Mary Magdalene, Launceston 26 March 1794, is the son of Caleb Hender and
Ann Tanner of Lanteglos Camelford, which Caleb Hender is the son of William
Hender and Elizabeth Clode as well, making Caleb Hender the brother of this
John Clode Hender. This will all be diagramed out on the
Lateglos/Camelford
page.
Family of John Hender, ?Cordwainer/Corn Dealer? and Wilm[e]ot Stacey
? The curious matter of John Hender's stated profession is an item of consideration. In his will it, when read
carefully, it states him to be a Cordwainer. Yet on his son's marriage entry he is listed, again clearly, to
be a Corn Dealer. It was not uncommon for a man to do a matter of things. In fact it is
not exactly easy to pin down just what a 'Corn Dealer or Corn-dealer' did. Corn is a
reference to various grains in one sense. Thus the father of Ann Brookes being a 'Malster' and the father
of Thomas Hender, John being a 'Corn Dealer' is not a stange mix at all stemming across counties. Neither on
the other hand is the mix with a 'shoemaker or Cordwainer' not related to a Corn Dealer
either. One definition of a Corn Dealer is a Merchand/Merchant or Tradesman whether trading in grains or of
other quantities, such as a country store keeper or salesman. Thus widow Wilmot being later a shopkeeper is
not much of a strech either. So, John made and sold his shoes, riased grain and sold it or arranged deals
with those in the grains and malster professions, and he could have
further been/become a general merchand of a number of products, etc. Go figure, I guess?
And then there is a 'marchand-mercier' who works out side of the 'guild system' entirely, not uncommon either
for the west-county of Cornwall well removed from London town. Sounds like a good American and many such
cut out from England for just such freedom from that 'controlled' system, and yet the
liberal Democrats would like to throw us right back into it - Socialists government people living off the
backs of the worker bee? And not so strange for son Thomas Hender to be come a 'Tanner' of leather hides
and to be a 'Currier' traveling to other counties such as Surrey.
Marriage: John Hender, bachelor
Wilmet Stacey of parish
& Tho's Stacy witness.
Residence: St. Thomas Hill/St. Thomas Str
Occupation: ?Cordwainer/Corn Dealer?

** During the 1818 baptisms of son Henry and Thomas, the clerk seems to have become confused
and recorded John Hender's name as also being Henry after his one son's name. And thus on the
same date of the two baptisms the father is in error listed as Henry when it ought to have
read 'John'. As a proof of this John Hender, Cordwainer, the husband of Wilm[e]ot Stacey lived
until 1820 and on Wilmot's will, both her sons, Thomas and Henry Hender are there on listed with
a number of her other such children. (see her will link above) and John's death/will information.
* 'She' appeared and declared that she was baptised Elizabeth Hender not Grace-G.B Gibbons P.
Curate. Those that do not take time to read clarifying note may have her listed as Grace as
Grace is still in the record.

What seems to have occurred here
for these two sons baptized the
same day and possibly twins, is
that the name of the one son
'Henry' got mixed up with the
name of the father, who was John
and thus both boys' father is
in error listed as 'Henry'. As
a proof, both these sons are on
Wilmon Hender's, Will and John
did not die until April 1820.

This first grouping of three generations of the Hender family of Launceston
is found and tied together in part by the 1841 census record of St. Thomas,
Launceston. There is 'grandma' Wilmot living right next door to son William
and his wife Elizabeth Ann Peter and her grandson William Hender and
grand daughter Catherine Hender. In the house with Wilmot are two other of
her sons Henry and Thomas and likely a neice a a grand daughter Mary
and Elizabeth Stacey. Stacey was Wilmot's maiden name and her daughter
Elizabeth married a William Stacey Dec 1835, so the one 4 year old little
girl is likely hers. With 'gmom' Wilmot keeping shop, this Hender family had
the 'cow' business well in hand. Henry was the butcher, Thomas was the tanner
of the hide and also the 'currier' who'd treat the hide with techniques of
dressing, finishing and colouring the leather. And dad, John Hender, while he
lived was the 'cordwainer', that is the maker of luxury boots and shoes out
of the finest leathers. I don't image that much of the cow went to waste in
the hands of this Hender family. And I don't even suppose it had to be a cow
with brother William being a woolstabler, one who deals in wool, sorting it
and grading it as to the quality of the wool's 'staple' or fiber.
You have likely noticed a red number to the
side of some of the Hender names. I have a database, an old one I am in
process of upgrading and updating, and these numbers are the individual
record numbers of a number of the Hender surnamed persons which are in my
database. I will also use these numbers in tieing these families together
as now the 'pedigrees continue.

The 1861 Census (ED3 St Thomas Hamlet folio 57 p 12) lists
William Hender, now age 52, as a 'Corn Dealer', but as with the case of his
brother Henry's marriage record, which lists father John Hender also as a
'Corn Dealer' when it is a known fact that John Hender was a 'Cordwainer', it
seems likely that William has now assumed his father's old business of being
a 'Cordwainer' and we have but another mis-subscription or transcription
of the lesser known profession of many fine shoes and boots. William's wife
Elizabeth is also listed, now age 48, but only William H. Hender, age 23 is
listed, at home and unmarried. As for Thomas P Hender, he is listed in the
burial records on 20 December 1852 as Thomas Peter Hender, St Thomas by
Launceston still at age 8. Also, Catherine Hender, who was but 1m old on the
1841 Census with William and Elizabeth, having now missed two Census records,
1851 and 1861, some may now presume her to have died as an infant or child,
but that is NOT the case. She is found getting married to Samuel Childs
Clarke of St. Thomas Hamlet, a widower himself, a Clerk M.A. and son of
James Clarke, Major General R.M.L.I. As for Catherine Peter Hender, she is
just listed as a 20 year old spinster.

On the 1861 Cesus (ED 1 Launceston St Mary folio 22 p 39) it
is evident that Samuel Marshall has passed away as Mary [Hender] Marshall,
now age 53, and a 'Currier', is listed as the 'Head' of the house and she is
also indicated to now be a 'Widow'. Saml. Marshall's burial is recorded as on
9 December 1860, Launceston, Wesleyan at age 54. Caroline and Edward Marshall
are listed, ages 24 and 18, both unmarried. Mary Marshall, duaghter, who
would now be 23 is not listed and I've not found a marriage or death for her,
so her situation is not determined currently by me. No new children are
listed. The indication that Samuel was buried 'Wesleyan' may means that family
church records are less available for Mary Marshall and perhap eventually the
others.

On the 1861 Census (ED1 Launceston St Mary folio 3 p 2) John
Hender is still found on Church Street and still listed as a 'Saddler', that
is of course the maker of saddles and such out of leather. He is 10 years
older, now 48, and has added to his business dealing 'Manure'. His wife
Catherine is listed as 49 and their son Alfred John Hender is age 15, a
scholar and at home with his parents. Emma Hender, who would now be 20ish, is
not listed with the family.
Now I do not find this John Hender family or any of its members on the 1871
census, but I do find members of the family upon the 1881 census with number
18Alfred John Hender as head of house (see under
18 Alfred John Hender below).
Final Note: In searching baptism listings for mother Catherine, no Cahterines
are listed of St. Stephens but two are listed as of Launceston, St. Mary
Magdalene. The 'best fit' is Catherine Frain, daughter of John Frain and
Pricilla, baptized 5 May 1811. The other is Catherine Fenney, daughter of
James Fenney and wife Catherine baptized 1813. The St Thomas by Launceston
listing has no Cahterine in the 1810-1814 time frame.

#730 Thomas Hender Son of #1816 John Hender and Wilmot Stacey
Thomas Hender and Ann Brookes where married at Trinity Church St Mary Parish Newington Surrey(London) England
Once again I feel to offer caution when accepting other person's work, even my own. But on Ancestry, not that Ancestry is
bad, but being open to listings from various people, you come to rely on others' work. And there are 'human errors' there
to be found in abundance, even with good intentions I imagine? But when it come to obvious errors, if the time is taken to
check them out, they ought not appear or at least not remain on such public resources as Ancestry and others. You must
do your own 'double checking.' Instance here is a pedigree and personal information posted on Ann Brookes of Staffordshire.
Her parents are given as Joseph Brookes 'YES' and Hannah 'NO' as assumed from the posted 1851 census from Staffordshire.
There on the 1851 Stafford census is Joseph Brooks labourer and wife Hannah who have a daughter Ann Brooks, age 29 and
Unmarried with 2 brothers George and John, and 1 sister Olive. Now on the 1851 census in Cornwall Ann is listed with her
husband Thomas Hender, and she is age 34 Married with her own children Sarah Ann, Janes[James] H. P., Thomas N.,
and Wilmot Hender. Obviously she cannot be both an age 29 stay at home unmarried daughter in Staffordshire and age 34 and married in Cornwall
with children on the same 1851 census. They and she do not match. And while Thomas Hender's and Ann Brookes' own correct marriage
record does list her father a Joseph Brookes, Malster, it must be just a simple matter of coincedence that the incorrect Joseph Brooks
on the 1851 census and his wife Hannah also have a 29 year old dauther named Ann. So it seems that a particular Ancestry provided
parents and siblings 'ARE NOT' Ann's of Cornwll unless the coincedence carries on
beyond the 'wrongly' provided 1851 census of Staffordshire magically. Also, the 29 year old Ann Brooks is born about 1822 — while
Thomas Hender's wife, Ann Brookes age 34 in 1851, would have been born (1851-34=1817) about 1817 — GO FIGURE!
Staffordshire 1851 Census Entry
Compared with Cornwall census entry 1851 below with pedigree summary - 'Ann Brooks' can't be two different people, one age 29 and
unmarried as above and 'Ann Hender' married wife age 34 with four children, in two different places at the same time.

On the 1861 Census, ED9d St Stephens Launceston folio 87 p 23 shown above, Thomas is
recorded with a new wife 'Caroline', born about 1827, Illogan, Cornwall.
There is a death/burial recorded for an Anne Hender age 37, dated 25 November
1852, a resident of Newport of Launceston. There is just the four
children of Thomas and Ann(e) listed on this census 1861 as they were in 1851 with
only slight name reporting differneces: Sarah A Hender, James H Hender,
Thomas B Hender and Wilmot Hender. Thomas Hender will die 10 December 1870 so
the family does not appear as such on the 1871 Census record. Wilmont will
appear with her brother Thomas B Hender on the 1871 census. Sarah Ann Hender
marries in the second quarter of 1869, Launceston area; I don't have a spouse
name. And James Henry Peirce Hender I don't presently have a line on after 1861.

(Lynton Laity) (Spinster)
Mother and Grandmother Catherine Hender, age 69 is living with Alfred
and his wife Jane Laity. Two children/grand children at listed of this
family and a third and fourth are listed per other records, as is the wife's
surname Laity.
The 1891 Census (1891 Census Ed 1 Parish of St Mary Magdalene, Folio 21 page 35)
lists this family. Alfred J Hender, Head age 45, Manure, Coal, Corn Merchant,
his wife Jane age 10 of Launceston, the children are listed John age 15,
Merchant's Assistant of Lanuceston, Lynton L son age 13 Scholar of Launceston,
Maurice S Hender son age 9, Scholar of Launceston and Edith L dau age 5 of
Launceston.
The only near match for Jane Laity,
who married Alfred John Hender, does
not fit. Too many Jane Laity persons
are missing from the vital records
held in the parish sorces in the
1800s are parish records are turning
into public records. One such 'near'
match is Jame Laity baptized in
1851 whose father was a Thomase Laity
a Sailor. But that is not who married
Alfred John Hender. Her father Thomas
Laity was a farmer of which I have
constructed a Laity family webpage
based primarily upon not just
parish records but the appropriate
census records which present the
correct connecting Laity family.
