MOON COUSINS ONE - Theophilus Moon

The first Moon family line who I identify as being 'cousins', though of some distance and then later through at least one joint marriage, it that line which I term the 'Theophilus Moon Line'. The reason I call this the 'Theophilus Moon Line' is that for a number of 'parallel generations' with my own Moon Family Line, this cousin line has as a member of each generation at least one Theophilus Moon family member which helps to connect and identify them. This parallels with my own Moon family line which for each such parallel generation, it always seems to have in each generation a 'Cornelius Moon'. So there is the Cornelius Moon Line and the Theophilus Moon Line.

Now, while these two lines seem quite distinct, there seems to be some relationary relationship between the two lines. First, they are both Moon family lines of Liskeard parish though each being distinct in some various ways. Second the one family, the Theophilus Moon Family Line in at least two family wills, happen to name and mention a Cornelius Moon without stating a set relative relationship. At the bottom of the page is a provided a pedigree put together by Frank McGuire of Australia which relates to this 'Theophilus Moon Family Line'. There find his email provided. I will proceed here to first put together that which I have determined from the will of Theophilus Moon (Senr.) whose wife is Dorothy and from the will of his son, Theophilus Moon (Junr.) who has no children of his own in his will, but he further substantiates his father's and siblings relationships as his will references many of them and their children. Along with information and links to my own efforts of transcribing those two wills, I will set out a simple line pedigree chart of the families I speak of.

The First Generation Is That Headed by Unnamed Parents

While Frank McGuire in his provided pedigree (below) suggest that a Christopher Moone and his wife Ann are possible ancestors to the Theophilus Moon Line and also the connecting link to the Cornelius Moon Line, I have yet found no such evidence at this point. Perhaps I eventually will, but for now, I must leave their names blank. What is known for sure is that there are such parents and they are the parents of such as at least four sons, named Theophilus, William, John and George. This information is supplied by the 1720 Will of Theophilus Moon (Senr.) which was written on the 19th of July 1720. He is the same as the Theophilus of the said four sons.

                        + William Moone
                        + Robert Moone
If I have interpreted the full original Frank McGuire provided pedigree, which is linked to below by clicking that portion of it which applies to that which I term the 'Theophilus Moon Line' that is shown below, I believe he has left this set of parents above as being unknown but possible, according to his consideration, descended from Christopher and Ann Moon. I would position these unknown parents as being some distant cousins relationship to the 'Cornelius Moon Line' myself for they do seem to rub sholders in the beginning of these telling wills. And I have found at least one later marriage between these two Moons lines, connecting them in that manner as well. What is still of some question is just how far back and to whom do we look as the common progenitor. As I have just stated, Frank McGuire looks to Christopher and Ann Moon as such a canidate.

This Theophilus Moon Will ought to be read. I've provided my transcription of it here, but my machine copy of it is very dark and blotted to such a degree that much of it is unreadable to me and I'm only human at that. Also unlike Theophilus' son Theophilus' will of 1747, which is presently viewable at an official Liskeard Parish Web Page, I am not able to find it online other than my poor transcription of it.

Now it ought to be considered that wills are but a snapshot of a moment in time as of the day of writing, and this first one was written on 19th of July 1720. Mr. McGuire's take on the will, and perhaps his copy is more ledgible, is that the son of John, brother of Theophilus is another John. I am not able to make 'John' out to be such on my copy of the will. The name seems more characters long than four from my perspective, and in the past I've considered 'Charles' but of late review it could be such as Richard or even the 'family' related name of 'Robertt'. I would think that some researcher who would have the tools to unlayer the blotched name could find it out, but I am not able to as it is so dark and blotched over and smeared. At any rate here are the four children itemized in sentence form.

  • Theophilus Moon who married Dorothty and who's family appears below. It is within his will that his following brothers and sisters are mentioned.
  • John Moon who had a son named Charles Moon.
  • William Moon who had two sons Robert Moon and William Moon, and a daughter named Mary.
  • George Moon who had two sons Henry Moon and William Moon who had a daughter named Joan Moon.

The Family of Theophilus Moon and Dorothy ____?____

As a likely uncle or cousin to my 6th, 7th or so Great Grandfather, I look to Theophilus Moon who's wife was a Dorothy ___________. The support for this is further taken from the will of Theophilus Moon written on the 13th May 1747, who is the son of the first Theophilus Moon whose will was of 1720. In that 1720 will concerning his own family, Theophilus Moon [Senr.] lists Charles Moon as his third son, William Moon as his fourth son, and two of his daughters Joan and Mary Moon. It lists his nephews William Moon and Robert Moon the sons of his brother William Moon, and ?Charles? [John, Robert, Richard] Moon son of his brother John Moon. It also mentions his nephew Henry Moon the son of his brother George Moon as well as his grand niece Joan Moon the daughter of William Moon the son of his brother George Moon. He mentions Cornelius Moon of Gormellink without stating relationship. He also mentions a John Moon of Gormellick ?'aforesd'? Butcher. [Perhaps this is where Frank McGuire makes the deduction of who the unreadable son of John is, but the John listed along side of Cornelius Moon of Gormellick is also of Gormellink, so the logic is not entirely clean. He also mentions his wife Dorothy and his eldest son Theophilus. He mentions his daugther Dorothy Ede the wife of Denzill Ede. And he finally lists his son Robert Moon [which we presume as his second eldest son] as executor of the will along with his son Theophilius. Based on this will, they are known or looked to have had seven or more children as follows:

  • Dorothy Moon who married Dinzell/Denzill Ede/EEED, born about 1688.**
  • Theophilus Moon born about 1690 unmarried/without children. Its his will, dated 1747, that further establishes the family of Theophilus Moon of 1720 with such items as it mentions 'my brother Robert Moon and Cornelius Moon of the Parish of Liskeard Yarn Jobber. Theophilus the son also lists his sister Joan Reed, wife of William Reed, his sister Dorothy Ede, his brother William, his sister Mary Moon and his brother Charles Moon.
  • Robert Moon cb 30 December 1692 who married 20 May 1726 to Jane Reede. They had two children names Theophilus and Jane.
  • Joan Moon cb 22 July 1696 who married William Reed with two children Johanna Reed and Jane Reed.
  • Charles Moon [I currently do not believe that this Charles Moon is the one who married Agnes Keast, 2 May 1714 Because: Charles Moon and wife Agnes between 1714 and 1720 had three children named Mary, 1715, John, 1717, and an Anthony Moon, 1719, who is looked to by other Moon desendants to to their ancestory] This Charles Moon according to his family's will had three children named Henry Moon, Theophilus Moon, and Mary Moon.
  • William Moon cb 11 February 1701
  • Mary Moon cb 26 Jan 1703, who may have married a Moon, and had a son named John Moon.

** See listing of Dorothy and Denzill's children in note to pedigree chart. * For Lois Moon I have prepared a page that I think may represent her ancestry and connection to this Moon family. While her connection seems more solidified than my own, the page I have put together for her is in no way totally verified and may prove quite inaccurate. It is meant for information and a suggested possibility on where to begin to further research and to discover the truth. Please view this page in this respect.

Dorothy his wife and also therefore the brother of Theophilus Moon [Junr], did receive of
his uncle Theophilus Moon [Junr] the Messuage Tenement with Appurenances call 'Trewidland'.
He was given it for the remainder of the Term and Estate, out of which he was to pay his
uncle William Moon two shillings weekly for the rest of William's natural life. And also
he was to pay Jane (his sister) Moon daughter of Robert Moon, brother of Theophilus Moon
[Junr] ten shillings. (This with othere such details are found in the 1747 will of said
Theophilus Moon [Junr].

Family of Theophilus Moon and Honour Hawkey

This Moon family are those who will become known as those of such as Lanrest, Tempellow, High Clicker and etc. They are living round and about my Cornelius, Edward and Nicholas Moon families at such as Trewen and Treheer. The parents of Honour Hawkey were Richard Hawkey and Mary Hoskin. They would be the ancestral family of Lois Moon which she reports on her page.

* Note: It is from this Robert Moon and Ann Rescorla that members of their families will eventuate to such locations as Autralia and Canada. The below provided pedigree provided by Frank McGuire is footnoted as to how his family in Autralia descends from this line. Also there is the web page of Lois Moon which details this family line further with added web pages of their family lines. As for my self, my family has here become associated with the Theophilus Moon Family Line from this end of the family by the marriage of Joseph Moon of High Clicker to Susanna Moon the daughter of my 5th great grandparents Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. My own family will come by way of Canada through Ontario some few generations later and will end up in the United States, at Utah no less. I'm still looking to find for sure how these two family line connect back together at the older end of the families as I believe that they eventualy will do.

One Theophilus Moon Pedigree

A time ago, I came across this Theophilus Moon pedigree found on the WEB and prepared by Frank McGuire(see below). One notable consideration I would point out is that I would make Jane Reede as wife of Robert Moon (T4.13). They married 20 May 1726 at Liskeard. This rather than a second Ann Rescorla. His pediree follows:

Note: Frank McGuire's great grand-father Edmund Moon (1822-1968) arrived in Australia in 1846. Edmund was the son of Theophilus Moon (1787-1831) who was in turn the eldest son of Robert Moon of Liskeard (1755-1815, who is notated as T6.1 on the above provided pedigree chart) - Frank McGuire: mcguirfl@nex.net.au
