CHIPMAN/CHAPMAN/CHEPMAN - The name of Chipman and/or Chapman is variously recorded upon the
reccords of Cornwall. In Lanlivery the Christian baptism record of William Chipman/Chapman
is recorded by the parish there as 'Chapman'. Upon the 1841 and 1851 census records of Philleigh
it is recorded as Chipman. As per the children of William and Elizabeth, there first children's
baptism are not found. Samuel's and Elizabeth's baptism are recorded in Philleigh as Chipman
and Jonathan's and Josiah's baptisms in Varyan are recorded as Chapman, though they are all
recoreded as Chipman upon the 1851 census of the family. Both the parish and the civil marriage
registration of William Chipman and Fanny Collet's marriage in 1839 was as Chipman, and since
they were married in 1839 that marriage is also why William is not shown with his parent's and
family on either of the 1841 or 1851 census as records as are their other known children.
William's and Fanny's children, whose registrations we have, are recorded as Chipman, including
on Grace's birth record in St. Just, Gerrans. However when Grace Chipman and Philip Trout Hender
were married in Devon, their marriage is registered as Grace being Grace Chapman. And when
Grace, after Philip's dead, marries William Collins, her father is on that registration and is
recorded again as Chapman. But for sure they are all the same family whether recorded as Chipman
or Chapman. They are the same, at least as so recorded by the various records' clerks. And this
in association with the family of the census records and such parish records, is what has now
concluded the issure and extended this family back another generation with addition siblings
being identified of William Chipman Jr., husband of Fanny Collet.
For a greater detailed look of this family, Chipman/Chapman, with much more documentation
displayed see the related page about Genealogy Done Right.
Haunts of the Family
As you move west along the southern coast of Corwall you will come to
Gerran's Bay. On the west and north of that bay lay the sites which pertain
to my Chipman family. There is Veryan where the 1851 Census reports that
William Chipman was born. There is Philleigh where the census reports that
Fanny (Collet) Chipman was born. There is St. Just were the family resided and
raised their children, William being a farm labor. And there is the general
area of Gerrans which Grace Chipman's birth certificate states that she was
born. As for Lanlivery, it is about halfway between 'Gerrans (bay)' and 'Looe
(bay)', inland and east of St. Austell parish and north by northeast of 'St.
Austell Bay'.
George Chapman/Chipman and Charity ____________
~ 4th Great Grandparents ~
George and Charity Chapman are identified as one of my sets of 4th Great Grandparents as
their names are so recorded on the Christian baptism of William Chapman/Chipman. There
are possible other children but that is now being further investigated. At this point only
William Chapman/Chipman is being shown as their son below:
- William Chipman b. abt 1784/5, baptism at Lanlivery as stated on the 1851 Philleigh
Census record and as found on the Lanlivery Parish records with baptism date of 31 July
1785. This evidence supports that the William Chipman and wife Elizabeth found on both
the 1841 and 1851 census records of Philleigh, Cornwall is the same who is the son of
George and Charity Chapman.
- Further detailed information is included in the family of
William Chipman/Chapman and Elizabeth next below:
Willaim Chipman and Elizabeth Moon (dau of John & Agnes)
~ 3rd Great Grandparents ~
William Chapman/Chipman was born 1784/5 and Christian his baptism was on 31
July 1785 at Lanlivery Parish, Cornwall. His father is recorded as George
Chapman and his mother is named as Charity. He married Elizabeth Moon,
daughter of John Moon and Agnes Bunt on 18 February 1808 as recoreded in the
Lanlivery Parish record. They appear to have removed to likely Veryan though
their son was baptized at Cuby with Tregony. But they returned back ?home? to
Lanlivery where they had their second child Mary. Mary died as an infant likely
before the age of 1. After that the family moved back to Veryan and their next
six children were born and baptized there at Cuby while living at Veryan. They
then removed to Philleigh where their last four children were born. Their family
is found on the 1841 and 1851 census records at Philleigh and at St Just Roseland
which can account variously for all members as reported on a
genealogy page concerning documenting your line. At
Philleigh Cornwall with his age of 57 is rounded down to age 55 and stated is
properly stated as age 67 on the 1851 census. Elizabeth's age is 65 on the 1851
Census. Appearantly Elizabeth was born at neighboring Pinnock about 1786 and she
was baptized at Liskeard on 25 February 1787. William's birth was at Lanlivery
were the parish record the name as Chapman. He is the only William
'Chapman/Chipman' on record, the son of George and Charity Chapman. William
and Elizabeth are one of my sets of 3rd Great Grandparents. On William's
son William's marriage recorded William Chipman the elder is listed as a
Farmer which matches the census records. We now have a fairly good idea of
a number of children they had from their marriage date in 1808 and looking
through their children as recorded on the census records and various other
records, such as the marriage record cited. Thus the now known children of
William Chipman/Chapman and Elizabeth Moon are as follows with their surname
varying between Chipman and Chapman depending most likely upon the recorder.
- John Chipman born abt. 1809, baptism 1 October 1809 at Cuby with Tregony, Cornwall
(was on *1841 Census with family). He was baptized as John Chipman, son of William and
Elizabeth.
- Mary Chipman born abt. 1811, baptism 10 Nov 1811 at Lanlivery as the family had
returned to Lanlivery for a time. Unfortunately Mary died an infant death and was
buried at Lanlivery the next year, 5 September 1812, less than a year old?
- Mary Ann Chipman/Chapman born abt. 1813, baptism 24 July 1813 at Cuby with Tregony, Cornwall
(not with family on 1841 Census). Family was living at Veryan at time of her baptism
and she was baptized under the name of Mary Ann Chapman. Mary Chapman was married 17
October 1835 at Philleigh to William Dingle a bach., as Mary Ann Chipman, spinster by
banns. She is living at Rocky Lane with her husband William Dingle as Mariann
Dingle according to the census taker's spelling of her name. They have three children,
named Grace Dingle age 4, Alexander Dingle age 2, and Mariann (Jnr) Dingle age 10m.
- Margaret Chipman/Chapman born abt. 1815, baptism 21 July 1815 at Cuby with Tregony, Cornwall
(appeared with family on *1841 Census). Family was living at Veryan at time of her
baptism and she was baptized under the name of Margaret Chapman.
- William Chipman born abt. 1817 at Veryan and his baptism was 29 June 1817 a Cuby
with Tregony, Cornwall. The family was living at Veryan at the time and he was baptized
under the name of William Chapman. He was age 34 on the 1851 census record with his wife
and family. He married Fanney Collett the daughter of William Collett and Ann Davey on
1 June 1839 at Philleigh, Cornwall, England.
- George Chipman born abt. 1819 and his baptism was 30 May 1819 at Cuby with
Tregony, Cornwall (he appeared with family on *1841 Census). He was baptized under
the name George Chapman and his family was living at Veryan.
- Philippa Chipman/Chapman born abt. 1821, baptism 3 Jun 1821 at Cuby with Tregony,
Cornwall (not with family on 1841 Census). The Family was living at Veryan at the time
and she was baptized under the name of Philippa Chapman.
- Thomas Chipman born abt. 1823, baptism 5 October 1823 at Cuby with Tregony, Cornwall.
Thomas was baptized as Thomas Chipman with parents William and Elizabeh living at Veryan.
- Elizabeth Chipman born abt. 1825 Cornwall (*1841 Census) and baptism 10 June
1825, Philleigh Parish.
- Samuel Chipman born abt. 1827 Cornwall (*1841 Census) and baptism 16 September
1827, Philleigh Parish. He was baptized as Samuel Chipman.
- Jonathan Chipman born abt. 1829 Corwall (*1841 & 1851 Census) and baptism as
'Chapman' 13 September 1829, Philleigh Parish.
- Josiah Chipman born abt. 1831 Cornwall (*1841 & 1851 Census) and baptism as
'Chapman' 4 September 1831, Philleigh Parish. He married first Jane Robins, daughter
of William Robins, on 29 Marcy 1855. Jane [Robins] Chipman died and was buried
on 29 February 1860 at Philleigh a age 28. They had no children. After a year and
a half, Josiah married again. On 8 August 1861 he married Harriet Burnett daughter
of John Burnett a reported ship carpenter of 'shipwright.' Again they would also
have no children but their marriage did last for years to come.
- Note: There may have been other children of William Chipman and Elizabeth
Moon but thus far the records available have reported but nine. For now from
the Census records and the OPC data files of Parish records and the marriage
records of the marriage of William and Fanny comes this presented information.
William Chipman and Fanny Collett
~ 2nd Great Grandparents ~
My 2nd Great Grandfather was William Chipman, an 'Ag. Lab.' of St. Just in
Roseland. He married Fanny Collett on the 1st of June 1739 at Philleigh
Cornwall. Now Fanny can be a 'nickname' for Frances, but due to the 1841 census record of
St. Just in Roseland, we know that Fanny Collett is the daughter of William Collett, Shoe
Maker, for he is living with William Chipman and wife's family listed as William Collett, age
65rnd, Shoe Maker. William and Fanny had seven known children as follows:
- Mary Collett Chipman born 18 October 1840, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- *Elizabeth Annie Chipman born 1 January 1843, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- William Chipman born 26 April 1846, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- *Elizabeth Chipman born 25 August 1847, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- Samuel George Chipman born 1 September 1850, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- John Chipman born 11 October 1853, St. Just in Roseland, Cornwall.
- Grace Chipman born 5 April 1857, Trewince Gerrans, Cornwall. She is my
Great Grandmother who married Philip
Trout Hender 23
April 1877, East Stonehouse, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. After Philip's death of 38 August
1878 as Grace Hender widow she married 2nd William Collings (Collins)
4th December 1880, Register Office, Liskeard, Cornwall, England. She died
19 March 1936, Ridgetown, Kent, Ontario, Canada and was buried at the Forest
Cemetery, Forest, Kent, Ontario.
* NOTE: Some may question two daughters with each having the same name. Both
these girls are listed in the 1851 census as member of this family as
daughters, one as Elizabeth Ann Chipman age 8 scholar and the other just as
Elizabeth Chipman age 3 scholar with both being born in St. Just Cornwall.
My son Shon Tavita [David] Hender had two sons one named Noah Tavita [David]
Hender and the other just as Jonah David Hender. The name Tavita is the
Polynesian form of David so both boys have the name of 'David'. It would seem
that the name Elizabeth is or was a strong family Chipman name and for whatever
reason they named two sisters by the same name Elizabeth.
