          CHAPTER 99

The Lord is great in Zion—Exalt the Lord and worship at his footstool, for he is holy.

1 THE LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the acherubims; let the earth be moved.
2 The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the peoplea.
3 Let them praise thy great and terrible aname; for it is bholy.
2a he is high above all the people Now the Jews were not particularly of the mind that Jehovah was universally the God of the whole earth. They considered themselves as God's elite covenant people and that the rest of the world was 'dross' in comparison. This attitude is so exhibited throughout Jewish history, particularly during the time of Christ. But they could be considered to have a 'cause' in this view. When the Lord brought the Children of Israel out of Egypt and eventually into the 'Promised Land', the Lord assigned Israel the duty of wiping clear the land of all those who had rippened in their sins unto the position of warranting destruction. Thus Israel was trained in killing and destroying and having a low opionion of all other nations but the nation of Israel. But in truth, God is the God of all nations and of all people, not just the Jews or Israel. When one reads this Psalm as applying to all the people of the earth there is a much more Christian understanding of it than would be held by the Jews who considered but themselves to be God elite and chosen people and the rest of the world but 'dead stone' and of little or no worth.  4a Moses 3:4-5; Abr. 5:4-5
