The census of 1841 found the family of Thomas Hender and Jenny Peter located in two separate factions or areas. Son Thomas Hender (III). and his two sisters Elizabeth and Jane were still in Altarnun at 'Tregrenna' where grandpa Thomas Hender [I] had bequeathed to Thomas Hender [II] his Freehold Messuage Tenement known as Coombes Tregenna situated in the parish of Altarnon. And now in 1841 the 'heirs' of Thomas Hender [II] and his wife Jenny Peter were left to care for that tenement holding. That is Thomas Hender [III] and his two sisters, Elizabeth Hender and Jane Hender.

Thomas Hender (III), baptism 1819, son of Thomas Hender and Jenny Hender nee Peter, has gotten marriage to Mary Tinney at St Stephens Launceston and he is now working as a Tollgate Keeper there. Their marriage record has him as of Altarnun and Mary Tinney of St Gennys where they were baptized. Their first son is Thomas Francis Hender.

Sister and daughter Jane Hender, who was on the 1841 Census with brother Thomas Hender
and sister Elizabeth Hender, has married Francis Barns, a seaman. They have two sons
Henry Barns and Francis Barns. Francis the father is a Mariner and looks to be away at
sea. Staying with Jane Barns nee Hender are her parents Thomas Hender (jr/III) and
Jenny Hender nee Peter. All the birth locations and dating fits and makes the the
family come together.

Thomas Hender of Altarnun and Jenny Hender nee Peter of North Hill are the parents of Jane Barns
nee Hender. The true 'Head' of house is not presently at home as he is a Mariner, so wife Jane
Barns, Married NOT Widowed, is listed in that position with her two sons. Thoughs Jane's parents
are listed as 'visitors,' they are Jane's parents and the two children's grandparents.
Ten years later, Thomas Hender (III) and his family has moved around a bit, likely in conjunction with his next job of being a Toll Bridge Operator. In addition to Thomas Francis Hender and another son William Peter Hender are seen with two sisters— daughters Mary Jane Hender and Susan Ann Hender. 1861 Census Devon Tavistock

At the house of Jane Barns, again husband Francis Barns, seaman again seem to be at sea. Francis
Barns is not found at home but Henry Barns is and a new daughter named Mary Barnes. Still living
with the household is 'Father' of Jane Barns, Thomas Hender, but Jenny is gone an Thomas Hender
seems to have a new wife, Elizabeth Hender nee ????. And there is another daughter ?in law? Jane
Hender? Stay at the house is a number of lodgers, perhaps related to some local temporary
assignment as they are all married but obviously at the time living away from home.

It should be recalled from the information preceeding, that in 1841 this Thomas Hender,
an Ag. Lab., was living with his two sisters Elizabeth and Jane at Treganna. Now some six
years later at age about 27 he is at St Mary Magdalen, Launceston, still a 'Labourer',
getting married to Mary Tinney age about 26, the one being baptized at Altarnun and the
other at St Gennys. Now that people are moving around a bit more, thank goodness for
census records and other civil records which details can be used to trace them and to
so associated them to their proper parents and places of birth/christening.

Here are three lines from the 1851 Census of Charles the Martyr, Sutton, Plymouth, Devon
on Lairal Bridge where not lives Thomas Hender, age 32, now a Tollgate Keeper. As it
states, he was born in Altarnun, Cornwall. He matches up with he parish baptism, the
1841 census referenced above (where he is living with his two sister in Altanun), the
marriage record information below and now this 1851 Census record in Devon. Connecting
the dots of information we have the same person and a history of moving from Altarnun,
marrying in Launceston and becoming a Tollgate Keeper and father of son Thomas F Hender
in Plymouth, Devon.

*A Likely Story? Likely Pontblyddyn (P-lyddyn) on Mold Rd. headed to and from Mold and beyond either way. Whether their assigned toll collection area of not is not known. Since the exact circumstance is not given, one is left to presumption and deduction. Child birth is not a well planned and/or timed out event. When the baby is ready to come he or she comes. In 28 April 1875, perhaps even so traveling through the North of Wales, and even perhaps to a new 'Toll Assigned Destination, Pricilla gives bith to Mary A. Hender about and around the location of P-blyddyn or Pontblyddyn — Pontbleiddyn on Mold Rd. headed to Mold and maybe eventually beyond to Anglesey Island. Mary eventually will marry Robert John Jones on 1 November 1899 at the Llanddudno Parish Church, [North] Wales. Here some add in Caernarvon or Caernarvonshire. But there is South Caernarvon- shire in southern Wales and Caernarvon Castle in Northern Wales and another Caernarvon farms over on Anglesey, but only one Llanddudno.

* Mary Adams was the daughter of John Adams and Joan Hill his first wife. She was the half sister of
Sarah Adams daughter of John Adams and Sarah Bath his second wife. The Will of John Adams names
his daughters among whom are his daughter Mary Smieth/Smeeth and his daughter Sarah
Hender. This
means that John Hender and Mary Smeeth above are half cousins, Mary Smeeth/Smieth being the
daughter of William Smeeth and Mary Adams and John Hender being the son of Thomas Hender and
Sarah Adams. Mary Adams and Sarah Adams were half sisters both being daughters of the same John
Adams. John Hender is my 2nd great grand uncle, the borther of William Hender by 3rd great
grandfather.

The facts concerning Jenny Hender / Garland / (nee) Peter are found below and further accessed/deduced in the story of Jenny on a page entitled Jenny's Song. The other marriage between Edward Garland and Susanna's sister Jenny Peter is at the right as the marriage was performed in Devon between Jenny Peter and Edward Garland as they went there to get married for whatever reasons. | ||

Whether you spell it Pollifant or Pollyphant or even Polyphant, it is the same place in Lewannick where John Hender, Saddler lived and where his first wife Mary Hender died and was buried in Lewannick. Mary Hender died and was buried 30 January 1840 at Lewannick and her residence was Polyphant. Then on 6 August 1840 John Hender, widower and resident of Polyphant in Lewannick, whose father was Thomas Hender, married Jenny Garland, whose father was Richard Peter. That marriage was at the parish of North Hill. For the next two decade census records, 1841 and 1851, John Hender of Pollifant or Pollyphant, was living with Jane/Jenny Hender his second wife. The 1841 census listed their ages rounded down at 50 and 40. Thomas was actually about 54/55 and Jenny was about 43. In 1851 they were listed at age 65 and 53. There are two matching records that would give the first marriage of John Hender. John Hender of Alternon/Altarnun married Mary Smeeth of St Gennys at Saint Gennys on 21 August 1821. They were both older, Mary Smeeth about 37 and John Hender about 36. There is evidence in the OPC parish records that indicate that John and Mary Smeeth Hender had a child Mary Hender in 1822 in Callington. And that is even though they were both older than 35 when they were married. And when John married Jenny later, she was about 43. there is no evidence of an 18 year old child in 1840, so? Will John's wife Mary Smeeth Hender died in early 1840 in January at age 57. And later that same year John married Jenny Garland (nee) Peter in August of that same year. But exactly what happened to Mary Hender, child of John Hender and Mary Smeeth Hender is not for sure. John Hender himself might be the John Hender listed as dying later in the year of 1852? No OPC parish record shows any marriage between a Mr. Garland and a Jane or Jenny Peter or even other such possible surnames that might fit the circumstance at hand. So that information, whatever it may be, is yet to come. Now for the tie between John Hender of Alternon and Mary Smeeth of St Gennys is of curious interest as what likely brought them together is the fact that they are cousins or half cousins as the facts maybe. John Adams married Joan Hill and had a child Mary Adams who married William Smeeth. William Smeeth and Mary Adams are the parents of Mary Smeeth who married John Hender. This John Adams married second Sarah Bath and they had a daughter named Sarah Adams who married Thomas Hender of Altarnun. That Thomas Hender and Sarah Adams has a son John Hender who is he that married his half cousin Mary Smeeth. Joan Hill = John Adams = Sarah Bath
| |
William Smeeth = Mary Adams Sarah Adams = Thomas Hender
|_______ _______|
| |
Mary Smeeth = John Hender
Mary and Sarah Adams were half sister, their father being the same John
Adams. Thus Mary Smeeth and John Hender, the children of these half
sisters would be half cousins.
This connection between the families of Gennys may be looked into in
determining who was the Mary Tinney of Gennys that Thomas Hender
later married of these related families.
Just so many country cousins in the 'isolated' county of Cornwall.
Now the death of John Hender is of another matter. There seems to be two John Henders that could qualify. One's baptism was in St Cleer in 1785 and the other's baptism was in Altarnun in 1785. There are no matching OPC burial entries that match well John Hender of Polyphant, which lies in the distict of Launceston or in the sourounding parishes of Lewannick, North Hill, Altarnun, etc. The only likely sources are two death index entries for John Hender in the England and Wales Intex. One for the first quarter of 1852 and the other for the last quarter of 1852, both of the district of Launceston. Thus my best guess at this point is that John Hender died in 1852 and is one or the other of these two. |

This 1861 Census puts a number of families together. Samuel Peter, Uncle, unmarried, age
76 is Samuel Peter the son of Richard and Elizabeth Peter of North Hill (Illand). Mary
Dennis is Mary Peter daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Peter of North Hill (Illand). She
is the Mother in law of John Strout head of house and mother of Mary Strout nee
Dennis whose mother Mary Peter married Thomas Dennis. And this Mary Dennis nee Peter is
the sister of Samuel Peter. And Jane Hender is actually Jenny Hender (Jane for Jenny —
nicknames), the wife of John Hender the son of Thomas Hender and Sarah Adams. And which
Jenny/Jane Hender nee Peter is the sister of Mary or both Samuel Peter and Mary Dennis
nee Peter, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Peter of North Hill. I would also suggest
that the 'difference' in Jane/Jenny's age, though not significant' may be to the fact that
sisters Mary and Jenny Peter may have always thought of themselves as 10 years apart and
if Mary was 71, then Jenny was 61 in family group reporting.
