Cousin from Thomas Rowe Hender and Mariana TroutCompiled and Anotated by Don R. HenderThe Thomas Rowe Hender family looks to have had a rough go at things. Despite being a trained and skilled professional 'Watchmaker', it was not the best of times for those who made watches by hand in private shops. The price for the 'necessary' pocket watch, which all men aspired to posses, have been driven down by the mass production line produced watches from America. The Americans were into mass production assembly lines factories and the quickly and cheaply made American pocket watch could not be competed with in price by the Enlish watch and clock makers in the mid-1800s. Thus we find Maryaina Hender at a Union Workhouse in 1847 in Liskeard where it was that their second child and daughter Ellen Hender was born. Just what Thomas Rowe Hender had to turn to for gainful employment is currently not know. On the 1851 census, and on his children's certificates he is still listed by his 'profession' of being a watchmaker, but that may have been more 'status' than the reality of the matter. Like his two surviving sons, he may have had to have turned to the sea, but as stated there is no information concerning that.On the 1841 Census we find Thomas Hender, watchmaker listed as age 15 due to the 1841 census age rounding rules. Beginning at age 15 and above, it was the common instruction to list the 'adult' ages to the next lowest 5 year interval age. Thus age 15 on the 1841 census could be for any person from age 15 to 19 and Thomas Rowe Hender would have been about age 18 or so at the time. At the time he was boarding at the house of Richard Gaskin and his wife Mary Gaskin, both reported at age 65 (65-69), with a number of other bachelor trained professonals, such as William Powell, a chandler; John Taylor, a painter; and Samuel Gaskin, a Tailor. The house was on Pike Street, Lanlivery of the Bodmin District, Borough of Liskeard. At that age it is likely that he was in the last stages of his 'apprentiship' and an actual beginning watchmaker.
Selina Toms was the daughter of William Toms of Polperro, Lansollos/Talland (West Looe) Cornwall (appears to be the son of Francis and Mary Toms/ages 45 and 40 found in West Looe in 1841) and Maria his wife of East Looe. James Toms is the son of James Toms a Harbour Pilot of East Looe, Cornwall (he appears to be the son of Francis and Mary Toms/ages 55 and 50 of East Looe), and his wife Susanna also of East Looe. Thus there appears to be no immediate relationship between these two Toms families despite the odd coincidence that there are two Francis and Mary Toms families, one in West Looe and the other in East Looe whose ages are 10 years apart from each other. I doubt that both of those Francis Toms are children of the same parents, so that pushes any possible relationship even one more generation back. His real birth date is 20 July 1890, he listed it as 20 August 1887. It would have been quite difficult to go through all the 'parental' approvals as I believe that his parents William and Selina were still living back in Cornwall, England. That this listing has her birth as occuring in Oregon is of further unaswered interest at this point in time. It was William's brother Charly who had established himself on the west coast and possibly had lived in Oregon about the time of Enid's birth but that does nothing but to increase the mystery with adding additional muddled facts.
