Menheniot & St Pinnock Hender(ra) Families

Compiled, Presented and Annotated by Don R. Hender

The Menheniot parish church is comparatively small-seen at right. Menheniot it self is to the east of Liskeard and to its south is Clicker Tor Quarry which lies near High Clicker and Lower Clicker which has been associated with one of the lines of the Moon family of Liskeard. Menheniot means 'sanctuary of Neot' from minihi and Neot. Thus it is associated with St. Neot. It Cornish it is Mahynyet. Also to the south end of the village of Menheniot itself is the location of Pool Hall Farm, which is associated with the George Raby family who married Jane Moon (4gu) relative/sister of Susanna Moon Trout (3ggm) the wife of Philip Trout (3ggf).

St Pinnock is more of a hamlet parish just west of the north end of Liskerd and south of St Neot and just north of Duloe.

Though of no known connection other than the name David, I will first list another David,
relation unknown, to this presentation just in case there is such a connection.

1851 Census ED 4b St Neot folio 363 p11 John Hender 12 servant, Liskeard at Woodland - William Langsford farmer 118a I list this John Hender age 12 as per change that he is one of David and Ann's children as it seems to be the custom for the poorer class to let their children out as 'servants' in order to increase the income to the family.
And now I turn to those who were known inhabitants of Menheniot which sets just below St Cleer and above Moval and may so have some connection thereunto. Hender or Hendra—One, Two or Three?

Now there is another Hender family to be found in the area of St. Pinnock which may allude some researchers as it, in the parish register is confused with 'Hendra' or at least written there by such a scribe and transcriber. Here I will present as much as I know of that family:

*[The name Hender was poorly written and in error extracted/transcribed as Heuder and even more in error for a 'Do'-Ditto puts 'Mailer?' - come on guys! - See Below photo graphic of census.] ** Was written as 2½ years but transcriber dropped off the ½ and wrote just '2'. ^ 'Sutwork' likely consider to be 'tut-work' which is a form of piece mill work, paid by unit.
This is what happens when a writer fails to make the two humps of the letter 'n' and makes then as just 'up points.' You get Heuder.
Perhaps the family was out of the house. The 1861 Census does not find them in St. Pinnock. They are not found until 1871 after Thomas has died and is buried in 1869.

Yes, the 1871 Cessus states it - but his age is listed as 24. Mary Searle's father was listed as Richard Searle on the marriage record. And son John Searle is listed as born in Boconoc. Is there such records which support this? Yes, two census records and one birth record without a father and only a Mary Searle, mother. But he is age 6m, 10 yrs, and would be 20 years in 1871 on those records. One question: Could the 24 year old John Searle as listed on the 1871 Census be the same as what would be the 20 year old son from Boconoc with supporting evidence? Miss listed age 'purposefully in 1871 would reconcile it?! No record of John Searle 20 in Boconoc in 1871 to disprove it.

* Date per her birth certificate in hand, states mother Mary Ann Wills & father Thomas Hender. -Thomas Hender bd3Oct1869 St Pinnock age 46 Residence Botundel (some ignore death age and puts born/christened 1819) -Harriet Hender bd18Oct1868 St Pinnock age18 Residence Botundel -The last three children of Bible Christian Looe but family residence St Pinnock-Thomas Hender is miner with wife Mary. Now Thomas Hender, miner of St Pinnock does live the span of being the father of all these children, but he would certainly have had to have at least two wives if not three for if the first Mary Ann Wills, mother of Harriett did die as looks to be the case in connection with the child's birth of Mary Hender in 1852, then at least one more Mary, if not two, are required for the last 5 children and the birthing gap would suggest two more Marys. **Mary Ann Wills appears to be the daughter of John Wills and Jenefer of Penfrane, St Pinnock; who also had a son named John Wills c.10Mar1822. A 'bridge' nickname for Jenefer is Jane, Jenefer-Jenny-Jane. And there is a John Wills age 71 of penfrane who db25Feb1864, St Pinnock and a Jane Wills age 77 db28Dec1870 of Penfrane St Pinnock. Also there was another Mary Wills of Penfrane who was db26Jul1821 at age 2, who may have been an earlier sister to John and Mary Ann Wills born and died earlier. ++1851 Census ED5 Boconnoc Folio 335/6 Pages11/12, Mary Searle, daughter of Richard Searle age 62 (1789-1864), Farm Labourer, born Boconnoc and his wife Mary [Crago (1793-1874)] age 58, born Lizard. They are at Trecan Gate, Boconnoc. Mary is age 24, labourer on farm, born St Veep with brother John Searle age 23 a Farm Labourer born St Veep and a grandson, Mary's son, John Searle, 6m born Boconnoc, thus a natural born son.

The 1851 census reports Thomas
Hender/Heuder is age 27 born St. Neot.
