Description Parties: 1) Thomas Couch and Nicholas Borrow the younger, yeoman, both of St Cleer
2) William Marshall, esquire, of Treworgey, St Cleer; Reverend George
Poole Norris, clerk, of Roscraddock House; Reginald Rogers, esquire, of
Carwinion, Falmouth
3) Christoper Childs, gentleman, of Liskeard.
Declaration agreeing to the setting up of a bank account in the name of 3)
containing £200, legacies bequeathed by Samuel Hender the elder to Mary
Lander Hender and Catherine Jane Hender for them to receive when they
reach 21. This is being done as 1), the trustees of Samuel Hender the
younger, have recently sold his real estates, Tremellick and Petta or
Petto Parks, both in St Cleer parish and Lankeast in St Neot parish to 2).
Recites: will of Samuel Hender the elder, yeoman, of St Cleer, deceased
proved 1 May 1855; will of Samuel Hender the younger, deceased proved 11th
September 1867. Includes receipt of the deposit.
- Of the noted estates Tremellick is noted correctly, but the English Census records and Parish
records record the name of the other estate as being 'Pitts or Potts Parks' rather than Petto or
Petta Parks. The referred to will is that of Samuel Hender III cited above as proved 1 May 1855
and that the other 'proved' date as of 11 September 1867 is his son's estate in relationship to
the deaths and estates of Samuel Hender the younger, son of Samuel Hender III the elder. The two
of them referred to as the 'elder' and the 'younger' in the description above. And since the
younger Samuel Hender is the only son of the elder Samuel Hender, this does further stand to
prove that Mary Lander Hender and Catherine Jane Hender are the first two children and daughters
of the younger Samuel Hender and therefore the 'Hender' granddaughters of the elder Samuel
Hender as so stipulated in his will as the heirs of 100 pounds each upon their ages reaching
that of 21 years. The rest of younger Samuel Hender's children were born after the writing and
dating of the will of the elder Samuel Hender.
This record is available via the Cornwall Council whose logo is shown - See online.
Addendum Pedigrees
At first quick glance a reading of the will of Samuel Hender may lead one to conclude that there
are no male Hender heirs in the future of this Hender family. Other than his 'only son', Samuel
Hender leaves everything to his grandchildren, none of which is a male Hender, only female Hender
granddaughters. That would be an incorrect conclusion. The will was written 4 April 1854. And
while it only names Mary Lander Hender and Catherine Jane Hender as the two daughters of his
only son, Samuel Hender, and even though that Samuel Hender is age 51, there are still unborn
male Hender sons to be born to Samuel Hender and his wife Catherine Godfrey. There will be at
least four such Hender sons at the following pedigrees will reveal, Samuel Henwood Hender 1855,
William John Hender 1857, Richard Hender 1860 and Thomas Henry Hender 1861 and/or 1865. And
further this will should settle the matter once and for all that Samuel Hender the younger did
marry twice, once to Mary Lander by whom Mary Lander Hender was born and obviously still living
in 1854, and second he married Catherine Godfrey by whom he had not only the named daughter
Catherine Jane Hender but a number of additional children including at least four sons.
These simple line pedigrees are here given for clarification of relationships in the foregoing
will of Samuel Hender and his further such descendants. Also given is a 1851 Census picture
of the family household make up leading into the making of the will. One
final note is that death of Catherine Hender Pearce from St. Cleer burial listings.
Quite the melodrama or soapbox airing could be made from the death's and
trials of those, of and related to this family of Samuel Hender and
Catherine Henwood.

The persons whose pedigree and census record names, above and below, are in yellow are those who appear in the above will
of 'Grandpa' Samuel Hender (III/Jr). As accurately as possible, they are placed in the pedigree above and by doing so
greater details of this family unit are determined. It is Catherine Hender who marries the named son-in-law, Richard
Pearce. Catherine first had a son named 'Samuel Hender Pearce', and later, Catherine delivers her and Richard's
daughter 'Mary Hender Pearce'. Shortly, in about 5 months of that delivery Cahterine dies and is buried on 13 April 1832
at the age of 31. So does her toddler, Samuel Hender Pearce, at age 1yr, that is a year and some number of months. The
baby, 'Mary Hender Pearce' does survive and is living with her 83 year old grandpa, Samuel Hender on the 1851 Census as
his Housekeeper. Later in that same year, 1851, Mary Hender Pearce will mary John Beaglehole and she is so written into
her grandfather's will as 'Mary Hender Pearce Beaglehole', the surviving daughter of Richard Pearce who is also named in
Samuel Hender's will. That is her story and how it is that we can know that Richard Pearce, the son-in-law, had married
Catherine Hender, the ill fated daughter of Samuel Hender and Catherine Henwood.
Next is the story of grand daughter Catheriine Mary Hender Dony which is much shorter and easier to follow. She is the
daughter of Samuel's and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth Hender, who married Thomas Doney on 25 June 1844 and that's why
and how Thomas Dony is named as son-in-law, as is his daughter Catherine Mary Hender Dony, in grandpa Samuel Hender's
will. Note below that she is also at the home of grandpa Samuel Hender on the 1851 Census listed below.
That just leaves grandpa's other two grand daughters named in the will. The two daughters of his ONLY SON Samuel
Hender. Yes, these two grand daughters are both the daughter of Samuel Hender's only son, Samuel Hender. Yet they are
born of two separate mothers. In 1846 Samuel Hender (IV) marries Mary Lander. Mary Lander, wife of Samuel Hender (IV)
has a daughter in 1848 named Mary Lander Hender. And then Mary Lander the mother dies in 1848, the same year of 1848
and very possibly in some conjuction with that birth. By the time of the 1851 census Mary (Lander) Hender age 2 is
living with her father Samuel Hender and his new wife Catherine, as part of the 1851 census family group just down or
up the street from grandpa Samuel Hender where he is living with his other two grand daughters. On the 13th of April
1852, Samuel Hender (IV) and his new wife Catherine have a baby girl they name Catherine Jane Hender. She is the
fourth grand daughter named in grandpa Samuel Hender's will. Four grand daughters by four mothers and three husbands
as Samuel Hender's only son, Samuel Hender, fathers two of them but by separate wives. It certainly is the cement of
such curious real life family facts which the combination of Census, Will and Parish Register comes together in
fastening this family group and their ties solidly together.
