The Truth & Falsehood Revealed[The Long of It]
Since it becomes difficult to follow, research and
understand, a number of family pedigree compilers have difficulty tracing family
lines when they cross county lines. Cornwall has been historically much easier
and simpler to compile when having to look only within the Cornwall county
borders. But when it comes to following lines and events that cross county lines,
even those that are 'just over the line,' family lines are lost track of and it
becomes simpler for the developer to find an 'in county' substitute than to reach
over the border and dig out the truth of the matter.
For whatever reasons and causes, it is and has been a fairly common event for a
marriage to take place just over parish and even county lines. Such was the case
of my own great grandfather's and second great grandfather's marriages, Philip
Trout Hender and Thomas Rowe Hender. Though both they and their spouses were of
Cornwall county, they both had their marriages performed in the Plymoth region of
Devon at such as East Stonehouse and Damerel.
Now both Thomas Dennis of Lewannick and Mary Peter of North Hill did the same
thing. When they first got married, they established or claimed parish residency
at East Stonehouse, Devon and they were married there. Thomas Dennis first married
Mary Hawke on 1 July 1810 at East Stonehouse in Devon. And Mary Peter first married
in her mid 30s to William Davey on 19 November 1825 at East Stonehouse Devon. Both
couples were of their late 20s or mid 30s so there was no question of being of
full age and perhaps rather then being a reason of a run-a-way marriage event, it
merely gave them the full freedom of being able to do so, so they did.
Thomas Dennis and Mary Hawke had three children, James Hawke Dennis, Mary Ann
Dennis and Thomas [Hawke] Dennis and almost ten years after Thomas Dennis' birth
mother Mary Dennis nee Hawke died and was buried on 13 January 1828. As for Mary
Davey nee Peter and William Davey, they only had one child and William Davey died
before even seeing his first child's birth as he was buried 24 May 1826. That
one child was a daughter named Mary Davey/Davy (various recorders recorded the
name variously).
By the time that widower Thomas Dennis and widow Mary Davey nee Peter came to
marry secondly each other in 1830, Thomas Dennis was age 50 and Mary Davey nee
Peter was age 40. They married 15 February 1830 at Lewannick. They had NO CHILDREN
OF THAT MARRIAGE. But each had had children or a child of their previous marriage.
The Matter of Mary Ann Dennis: I have to deduce that a portion of
the problem has been the manner of records keeping in the parish registers as they
are. From Mary Ann Dennis have been born in the spring, later to have been
baptised on 26 of June and then to have been buried at the age of 8 months
on the 21 December makes perferctly fitted chronological sense. And that IS what
had happened to Thomas Dennis' and Mary Hawke's daughter Mary Ann Dennis. But
throw in a parish records confusion of the recording of the year number as either
how it was recorded and/or how it was transcribed, and you suddenly get a Mary
Ann Dennis being buried before she was baptized.
There is no other Mary Ann Dennis of the parish of Lewannick except the daugther
of Dennis and Mary who could have been only 8 month old. It only works out if
there has been an error in the year date of baptism or the year date of burial.
As to the spacing between siblings James and Thomas, the error could be in either
direction. That is Mary was born, baptized and buried in either 1815 or she was
born, baptized and buried in 1816. They only thing that could not have happened
is that Mary Ann Dennis could not have been buried at 8 months in December 1815
and have been baptized in June of 1816. One of the events year dates is incorrect.
Either Mary was baptized in 1815 or she was buried in 1816. Probability would
likely favor that the burial date is wrong. But even then truth does not adhere
to probability. Truth is was truth is. And it is deduced here to be one or the
other, the which is unkown. Perhaps a review of the original parish record might
shed some light, maybe not.
At any rate, the census record confirms that the Mary living in the Dennis
household in 1841, Lewannick was Mary Davey age 16 NOT Mary Dennis. And
the marriage record of John Strout's marriage of 17 September 1850 records that
he married Mary Davey daughter of William Davey, NOT Mary Dennis. Further
supporting evidence would be in the naming of the two daughters of John Strout
and Mary Davey. Mary Peter Strout had as her middle name the maiden name of
her grandmother Mary Peter, that Mary Peter who first married William Davey and
secondly married Thomas Dennis. The second daughter Grace Jane Northey Strout was
named after her father's mother, grandma Grace Northey.
The bottom line fact is that all the records are there in support of the facts
as set out here of the various marriages, baptism and even burials. What is NOT
in hand is all the various records that would support the other supposition. And
the reason fot that is that you will not find records that are not based upon
the truth of the matter. Yes some records are lost and not yet found. That is
possible. But the records that are in hand are a complete set of the records that
do support the deduced TRUTH of the matter as set out here:
Mary Hawke = Thomas Dennis = Mary Davey nee Peter = William Davey

^ NOTE: There is no marriage record to be found for a Mary [Ann] Dennis to John Strout. BUT as the
truth is in the actual marriage between Mary Davey and John Strout, their record is found.
- John Strout Married Mary Davey. He did not marry Mary Ann Dennis as she died at 8 months old.
* Mary Ann Dennis was born April 1815/6, baptism 26 June 1815/6, died/buried 21 Dec 1815/6 a8m.
There has been a clerical error of recording and/or transcription of either the 1815 or the
1816 date. She was born, baptized and buried in 1815 or she was born, baptized and buried in
1816. Perhaps a review of the parish record may reveal which — perhaps not.

** There is NO marriage between Mary Ann Dennis and John Strout to be found. The marriage
that is correct IS FOUND, and is that between John Strout and Mary Davey, the daughter
of William Davey and Mary Davey nee Peter, whom Thomas Dennis married second as the widow
of William Davey.

This family needs some explaining. If one looks at 1841 Lewannick and the Dennis
household there to reference back to, the positional changes may make better sense.
Thomas Dennis had previously married Mary Hawke and their son James Hawke Dennis
Married Eleanor Gouldsworthy had three children then he and perhaps also his wife
died. These three children, Mary Hawke Dennis, Charles Dennis and James Dennis are
the grandchildren of Thomas Dennis and his first wife as explained.
Thomas Dennis son of Thomas Dennis and Mary Hawke (decd) has most likely as known,
moved on to America and Canada to raise a large family there. Mary Davey has of
the 1841 household has married John Strout and they are living with the family.
In relationship to the head of house, Thomas Dennis age 70, they are both considered
as in-laws. The bloodline family connection is between Thomas Dennis' second wife,
Mary Davey nee Peter age 61. She and her first husband William Davey are the parents
of the Mary Davey now married to John Strout.
In relating primarily to the Strout family that is basically it until the 1861
Census is considered next.
1 8 6 1John Strout Moves to Head of House
A bit of historical rundown is useful here. Between 1851 and 1861 some deaths in
the family have occured that effect the family arrangements for the next decade's
Census Snapshot. Thomas Dennis dies at age 54 and is buried at Lewannick 23
February 1854. Third Great Grand Uncle John Hender has also died and passed on.
Thus two or three changes happen in the household make up, John Strout moves to head of
house. Jenny/Jane Hender - Garland nee Peter comes to live with her sister Mary
Dennis - Davey nee Peter. And so also does confirmed bachelor Samuel Peter.
Understanding who these people are helps to understand how they are discribed on
the census record.

Now to quickly understand the Polyphant household of John Strout it may be
thought of as two families that are related by John's mother-in-law, Mary Dennis
- Davey nee Peter. The actual reason that John's mother-in-law seems to have
freely invited in her two siblings to stay with them is that in reality it may
not have been a landed household that John has brought to the table.
Recall that Mary Davey nee Peter and William Davey are the parents of John's wife
Mary Strout nee Davey. And Stray(er)park, a land tenement associated with Polyphant
may well have come into the family via Mary Davey mother and Mary Davey daughter
jointly together. That seems to be a common thread that has come via Davey and
effected first the household of Thomas Dennis, Mary Davey nee Peter's second
husband. And now it seems to also effected John Strout husband of Mary Davey daughter
of William Davey and Mary Peter the mother-in-law and her brother Samuel Peter
and her sister Jenny/Jane Hender - Garland nee Peter.
As for John's own family, he and Mary Strout nee Davey have two daughters,
Mary Peter Strout, named Peter after his mother-in-laws' maiden name, and
Grace Jane Northey Strout, named Northey after his own mother's maiden name.
Families and family names have played a strong roll in the development of the
Cornish family lines through out the years in Cornwall, England.
