TROUT of EAST LOOE AND ST. MARTINS by LOOE BAY

Within the Parish of St. Martins by Looe Bay dwelt my Trout, Troute, Trowte, or Troutt family. For their 200 years of known family history, the Trout family lived in the East Looe, St. Martin's Parish area. Only the birth of my 3rd Great Grandfatehr Philip Trout was outside of that area and he was born in Helberton, Devon. But the family returned immediately to East Looe as all of his children where born at East Looe and Christened at St. Martin's Parish. If you note on the map the location of E. Looe, you can just barely make out the parish of St. Martin's a little to the left of St. Gerrans.

Thomas Trout/Trowte and Grace Stevens

I currently look to my 8th Great Grandfather as being Thomas Trout who married Grace Stevens on the 24th of July 1664 as recorded in the Scilly Island Parish record. They appear to have had one known child as follows:

Thomas Trout and Grace Wilshman

I look to my 7th Great Grandfather as being Thomas Trout Who married Grace Wilshman on the 17th of June, 1690 as recorded in the Scilly Island Parish record. They appear to have had eleven known children as follows:

Samuel Trout and Mary Pine

I look to my 6th Great Grandfather as being Samuel Trout Who married Mary Pine on the 9th of August, 1739 as recorded in the Scilly Island Parish record. His will was written in May, 1761 and proven in June, 1761 so his death was in 1761. If Samuel isn't my 6th Great Grandfather, then his brother Philip Trout would appear to be. This couple appears to have had five known children as follows:

In Samuel's will of 1761, is mentioned all living three sons as being Thomas Trout, Samuel Trout, and John Trout. It appears to be witnessed by John Skinner his brother-in-law and Thomas Trout Senr. his brother?

Alternative 6th Great Grandparents

Philip Trout and Susanna Edey

My alternative 6th Great Grandparent would be Philip Trout the brother of Samuel Trout. He was christened on the 6th October, 1696. He married Susanna Edey on the 13th May, 1724 according to the Scilly Island Parish record. She's most likely the Susanna Trout who was buried 26 April 1746 as displayed to the right right. They had two known children as follows:

  • Thomas Trout christened at St. Martins, East Looe on the 7th of April, 1729. He would appear to have married Mary Sanders on the 20 November, 1764 and he would be age 35 at marriage. This is possible but the age at marriage favors this Thomas as being Samuel's son while the naming of the his first child Philip favors his being Philip's son.
  • Susanna Trout christened at St. Martins, East Looe on the 16th of February, 1726. She married Joseph Harper on the 2nd of February, 1746.

Thomas Trout and Mary Sanders

I look to my 5th Great Grandfather as being Thomas Trout who married Mary Sanders on the 20th of November, 1764 as recorded in the Scilly Island Parish record. He is either the son of Samuel Trout as listed above or that of Samuel's brother Philip Trout listed above as an 'alternative'. This couple of Thomas Trout and Mary Sanders appear to have had two known children as follows:

The strongest evidence that this Thomas Trout's father was Philip Trout rather than Samuel Trout as I have suggested above would be that he names his first born son Philip after what would be his father's name. Time still favors the link as listed.

Philip Trout and Susanna
(4th Great Grandparents)

My 4th Great Grandfather was Philip Trout who marries a Susanna. He is the son of Thomas Trout and Mary Sanders as listed above, likely born 1765 and being christened at St. Martins on the 23rd of February, 1766. This couple traveled and lived elsewhere than East Looe, Cornwall as there only known son was born in Helberton, Devon according to the census records. He is listed in the 1841 census at age 75 living with his son Philip and his three grandchildren Philip, Jane, and Susan. He is also listed in the 1851 census at age 86 as a widow and Superannuated ?Landing Waiter? On the census he is listed as being born in East Looe, and he has his 27 year old grand daughter living with him as his housekeeper. He died 2 February 1855 [Transcribed inscription states '1853' age 89]. The parish register states he was buried at St. Martin by Looe on 5 February 1855 at age 90. This couple's one known child is listed as follows:

According to the tombstone inscriptions, Philip's wife Susanna died a long time before he did on the 2nd October 1818. He died 2nd February 1855 at age 90/89. They are both buried in the St. Martin's Parish cemetery.

Philip Trout and Susanna Moon
(3rd Great Grandparents)

My 3rd Great Grandfather was Philip Trout who according to the census records was born in Helberton, Devon 1790c. He married Susanna Moon, the daughter of Nicholas Moon and his wife Mary Ann, on 29 April 1819 at the parish of Liskeard. His death inscription reports that he died 18 Nov 1879 but his burial date in the Parish register gives he was buried at St. Martin by Looe on 17 November 1879 at age 89.
The Moon family connection is verified by several Moon family wills in which not only is mentioned Philip Trout as Susan/Susanna's husband, but also mentions their daughter Mary/Marianna and her husband Mr. Hender (Thomas Rowe Hender - see HENDER history). On the census records, this Philip Trout is listed as a Mercer and Auctioneer. He and his wife had four or five known children as follows:

** This should answer the ? questions of 'Jane Trout' above:
** The only question that remains is, are the two Jane [Ann] Trout daughters the same Jane, with her being baptized again at St. Martin by Looe as Jane Ann Trout when here sister Mariana Trout was there baptized? If so, this may also finally resolve the question of whether there were twins in the family. Jane Ann Trout is buried 27 February 1893 at St Martin Looe, age 71 and resident at Hendersick Talland as was also her father a resident of Hendersick Talland when he died and was buried back at St Martin's in 1879.

Like his father before him, this Philip Trout died at age 89 on the 15th November, 1879 and his wife Susannah/Susan/Susanna Moon also died long before him at age 42 on the 21st of May, 1839. Some coincidence huh? As to their number of known children, either there was only four and Jane and Mary Ann are not twins or their where five with the first Jane dying an infant death and Jane Ann and Marianna are twins. The census records are not consistent. In 1841 Jane is listed at age 15 which would make her a twin and in 1851 she is listed at age 27 which would support the notion that she was christened twice, once Wesleyan and once Church of England. Personally, due to how the membership in any other church was frowned upon in England, I'd guess that there is only one Jane, not a twin, and that the difference in census records is explained by covering up the Wesleyan christening with the Church of England one on the 1841 census. But who knows?

However the 1881 and 1891 Census records show Jane Ann Trout living in Talland with Petherick Higman and her sister Susan Moon Higman nee Trout and they both list her as unmarried/single. So this is the Jane Ann Trout and father Philip Trout at age 89 in 1879 must have moved to live with them as well and is why they all ended up at Hendersick, Talland. And Jane Ann Trout's ages of 59 in 1881 and 69 in 1891 just about seals the deal that she is the same Jane Ann Trout who was baptized twice, once as non-conformist and once as Church of England—all bases covered there I guess.

There seems to be some events of interest concerning the baptism records of this family. Therefore I will present them here to view and discuss them from that perspectie of what I know or may think regarding them. The first there are of a Susanna Trout whose baptism is recorded 20 July 1820. And there are three such records to view and consider. I will put them in order as they make sense to me.

I believe what is being seen here is the case of two baptisms of two persons named Suanna ___ Trout which have seemed to be needed to be sorted out in the mind of the 'notes' writter on each of these entries. I believe the first record concerns but one family which I will explain as soon as I elimiated the third record. The third record is obviously that of a separate family of Thomas Trout and his wife Johanna and their daughter Susanna Trout. Whether this Thomas Trout is family related, we will leave for another time and another discussion. Thomas and Johanna are residence of London and are but visitors or sojouners of East Looe for this consideration and we need not further be concerned with that baptism record other than it occured the same day and is perhaps a part of the reason for the lengthy explanations to distinquish who is who.

To understand the first two records and the accompanying notes on them, one needs to understand the Philip Trout family. We actually have three generations here. There is Philip Trout the Mercer and Dealer who is also at times autioneer, perhaps in relation to his goods. There there is his father, also a Philip Trout, who is a 'Customs Officer' or more precisesly he is a 'landing waiter' who is a customhouse officer who oversees the landing of goods, etc., from vessels; a 'landwaiter'. What has been confused and what we see in the first two records is that actual recordings of two separate baptism of two separate persons, one being the daughter Susanna [Moon] Trout and the other being that of her father, Philip Trout the mercer with his father Philip Trout the Custom's landing waiter. And what is added to this is that both father and son are married to a wife who is named Susanna, two other separate Susannas than the currecnt daughter Susanna. This is verified in the census records. Perhaps a simple line pedigree would held here.

Now, whatever the cause of all the explanations written out on the 8th of July 1820, there is but one baptism for Susanna Moon Trout on the 5th of July 1820 and one other baptism for another Susanna Trout (the daughter of Thomas and Johanna of London). And dispite the 'confussion' which the written explanations may cause, the bottom line is that they also give a birth date (11 January 1790) for Philip Trout, Susanna Moon Trout's father and Susanna Moon's husband, who was born at Helberton, Devon [per the census records], and then by the 14th of March was back down to East Looe in order to be privately baptized at Looe, the likely actual residence of his family. From these 'extracted' and 'transcribed' reports taken from the parish registers, it is hard to say exactly how they did appear there. Certainly the 'forms format' of their reporting here below does not do the information justice except and unless you know the whole background and history of the family that relates to it. And that I believe I know and understand.

Sometimes what these records need is a bit of cross records reference and family history understanding to help determine just what someone is really looking at. Separately the baptism record(s) are just not to be understood until one puts in the census records' decade snap shots with them, plus all the rest of the family history backgroud which comes from building these families up from the ground little bit of information by little bit of information. And the depth of cross referencing the records deepens. Mary or Mary Anna Trout is on the 1841 census where she is at the Narracott or Raby residence as the census record is segmented between two pages. And why isn't Philip Trout at home in 1851 where we just find his daughter Jane and grandpa Philip Trout together? Well, he happens to found over at Plymouth, Devon, likely attending to some business there.
