Moon Cousins from Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead
prepared by Don R. Hender - 5th Great Grandson
Perhaps the key source document that ties things
together with all the other supporting evidences and sources it the will of
Jenny (Morshead) Moon. Jenny was born abt 1735/6 the daughter of Elizabeth Pyne
Morshead who was named in Jenny's will, her father the deduced Mr. Nicholas
Morshead. Jenny married Edward Moon 14 December 1762, Edward died in June
1792 and was buried at St. Keyne on 14 June 1792. Jenny Moreshead Moon died and
was buried 30 January 1815 at age 79. Her will was written 15 November 1810 and
proved after her death.
In Jenny's will she names her mother Elizabeth Morshead deceased in that in
her mother's will she is given certain powers which applies to this her own
will. She also names her three sons Nicholas Moon,
Cornelius Moon and Joseph
Moon though Joseph is also deceased by 1810. She further names
her three daughters Jenny Stephens,
Elizabeth Moon and Ann
Hingston. And she
further names her two grandsons, the sons of her daughter Susanna
Moon who married Joseph Moon of High Clicker, Joseph Moon and
Charles Moon.
There is also another son, Robert Moon, so
identified as member of this family per his own will written 15 July 1805,
which was also the year of his death. And there is another sister,
Susanna Moon, so identified
by her Christianing record. A simple ancestry chart will here be
presented to visually put this family into focus.

Of interest and worth mentioning, is that in Robert Moon's will there is the
consistantcy that his brother Joseph Moon is only named in conjunction with
being the father of Charles Moon since Joseph Moon had died 1804 before
Robert Moon wrote his will in 1805. Also in Robert Moon's will, Ann Moon is
named as Ann Moon and not Ann Hingston as she was yet to be married to
Richard Hingston in 1810. Another consistantcy is that Robert's will otherwise
only names his living siblings, Nicholas Moon, Cornelius Moon, Jenny Moon,
Elizabeth Moon and Ann Moon. It is therefore further presumed that Susanna
Moon is also deceased prior to 1805.
Now the will of Cornelius Moon Christened 1 December 1769 comes at the end of
this family unit. He died 3 February 1837. His will only names his sister
Elizabeth the wife of Robert Carswell by names. And he leaves all to Elizabeth's
son unnamed and his hiers. All of Cornelius' brothers had preceded him in
death and only Elizabeth his sister remained living to inherit. Nicholas Moon
brother and my ancestor had died by 1826 and though he had descendants, none
of them made his brother's will as it is likely that Cornelius figured that
the family of Nicholas Moon, his oldest brother were taken care of in that
which Nicholas had already inherited and passed on by his will of 1826.
Now as referenced above, the Richard Hingston and Ann Moon pedigree cousin
tree will be given. This family appears on both the 1841 and 1851 census
records.

Family of John Carwell and Emmeline Raby
The family of John Carswell and Emmeline Raby is another case of family being inter-related.
John Carswell is the only son of Robert Carswell and Elizabeth Moon. This Elizabeth Moon is
the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. And by the will of Elizabeth's brother
Cornelius Moon, written in 1832 and probated in 1837, come the Trewen land rights where
Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell, wife of Robert Carswell, and her son John Raby Carwell are
living upon on the 1841 and 1851 census records as first presented below. Note that while
the 'rounded 1841 Census' does give the son's age nearly correct despite the rounding of
the age, the 1851 Census age of the son is completely an error in the OPC online project
that extracts from the original.

[Note: The 1841 Census has the adult ages generally rounded down in 5 year intervals with few
exceptions. This means that John Carswell age 20 was age 20-24 and Elizabeth Carswell age 60 was
age 60-64.]
* Any interest in Trewen in Liskeard was that which would have come by way of the
will of Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell's brother Cornelius Moon - WILL.
** Elizabeth Carswell is the same as Elizabeth Moon the daugher of Edward Moon and
his wife Jenny Morshead. Dispite the age difference between Elizabeth Carswell and John Carswell
Elizabeth is John's mother. He is the son of Robert Carswell and Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell mentioned
in the will of Cornelius Moon just previously cited. Elizabeth is Cornelius Moon's sister, daughter
of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead as stated.

* The Census is either mis- or poorly written or read. John Carswell's age is 32 and
his Mother's age is 73. It is the reason that Elizabeth Moon and Robert Carswell had
only the one son. Elizabeth was in her 40s when her son John was born. And it is one of
the primary reasons the relationship pedigree displayed at the end of this page has a
generation jump/skip between the husband John Carswell and his wife Emmeline Raby. NOW>>
What are the two numbers at the right? Are they 22 and 75 or 32 and 73? Straight from
the Census page as written are these 1851 ages of John Carswell and Elizabeth Carswell.

Between his mother delivering him in her 40s and John Carswell being l0 years older than his wife
Emmeline Raby, Emmeline has and interesting set of relatives to the four children she will have. Her

and grandmother of Emmeline Raby, was the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. Also John Carswell,
Emmeline's husband's mother, Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell is also a daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny

Carswell Family Ancestry
Robert Carswell is the son of John Carswell and Mary Richards. That Robert Carswell married
Elizabeth Moon, daughter of Edward Moon an Jenny Morshead. As Elizabeth Carswell, Elizabeth
[Moon] Carswell inherited from brother Cornelius Moon, such property rights that led her
family to reside at Trewen of Liskeard. It is there at Trewen that the 1841 and 1851 Census
finds the mother and son, John Carswell and Elizabeth Carswell. Thus the parents of John Carswell
are Robert Carswell an Elizabeth Moon of Trewen, Liskeard. Then of course that John Carswell
marries Emmeline Raby, which Emmeline Raby also descends from Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead
through another daughter named Jenny Moon, Elizabeth Moon's sister as presented above.

The Mystic of Carswell
THERE are those who seem to makeup pedigrees out of
nothing for whatever purposes they have at hand. Without facts or figures they mine the records just
to put together falsified Pedigrees. Such is the case of this Carswell Family. Well to do, perhaps.
Lady Elizabeth [Moon] Carswell is well spoken of, at least in the Census Record as a 'Lady'. What
positions, if any, these Carswells may have had, there are some that would readily tie themselves to
them. Having them as cousins upon three different connects, I have studied this family and I feell
somewhat obligated to set the ancestry grabbers straight.
Without going into giving of my connections to John Carswell and Emmeline [Raby] Carswell, I will
begin with them and their four children that genealogy makers seem to covet a connection from.
Let it be given here their simple line pedigree from above.

* Some transcriber or recorded combined to list his OPC baptism under the name of Charles Honey
Carswell. So that goes. But at least the genealogy grabbers seem to be in agreement upon the matter of
his death and burial at the age of 12 at Liskeard under the name of Charles Henry Carswell.
John Carswell the husband dies in 1867. A bit of a will abstract from the Index of Wills and
Administrations of England and Wales, National Probate Calendar for 1867 will be given here.
Carswell, John. [Effects under 1,500 pounds.]
Now there in the first place John Carswell was dead the year after his son Charles birth. Those are
all the facts we need upon that matter.
The youngest son, Charles Henry Carswell died 9 June 1878 in Devon England and he was brought back
to Liskeard, Cornwall where he was buired on the 12 of June 1878. That only leaves the mother, the
two daughters and the oldest son John Raby Carswell.
Now as for John Raby Carswell I again turn to the Index of Wills and Administrations of England and
Wales, National Probate Calendar.
Carswell, John Raby
John Raby Carswell of Iquique Peru South America died 20 May 1881
Administration London 29 February [1932] to Jane Stephens Carswell spinster.
Effects 469 pounds 10s. 9.
It would seem that some matter has taken the 20 year old John Raby Carswell from England, Cornwall
and/or Devon to be in Peru in 1881. John was not poor with over 450 pound to distrubute according
to his will. Perhaps it was some duty or professional matter. At age 10 it is given that he was in
school in Devon in the Parish Census of St Andrews, and is listed there with a group of over a
dozen scholars ranging from age 16 to age 10, with John being the singular boy at age 10. It seems
that they are boarding at the schoolmaster's school/home, William Bennett, M.A. Schoolmaster.
The facility currently housing 24 persons at time of the Census taken. It was a Corporation Grammar
School of some type of boarding school.
Beyond the John Raby Carswell Will reference above, what was John Raby Carswell doing in Iquique,
a seemingly remote sea port of dispute between the countries of Peru and Chili? Turning to history
we find reference to 'The War of the Pacific (1879-1884). It does appear by the Will segment of
that of John Raby Carswell, that in 1881, as of the 20th of May, 1881, Iquique was still claimed
by Peru on the date that John Raby Carswell died. Twenty years old, Christian Baptized on 4 April
1861, he died 29 May 1881. So often when wonder where have all the young men gone? At the end of
the war in 1884, Iquique was award to the nation of Chili. The history of the War is in the Books.
The names of its young men are not. Only a Will in England marks the passing of John Raby Carswell.
Where the British in that War? History states of the major warship of Peru, the monitor HUASCAR:
"Their major warship, the monitor HUASCAR,
had been stolen by her crew in 1876 in order to
go pirating. An international alert gave rise to
her being hunted down by the British ships
HMS SHAH and AMETHYST. These two ships
carried out the first recorded instance of a torpedo
attack on the HUASCAR but it was unsuccessful.
Nevertheless her pirate crew got
sufficient of a fright to put back to Peru and
surrender."
Now without further information, the further facts seem somewhat spurious to absolutely ridiculous.
I will list them from one such genealogy put together:
- Married 25 September 1880, Butte, California to Julia Addeline Butler (1860-)
- Son Obediah Carswell born 7 June 1881, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina, USA
- Son Calvin Joshua Carswell born October 1882, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina, USA
- Son Thomas Carswell born 11 June 1886, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina, USA
- Son Alexander Carswell born 7 October 1888, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina, USA
- Daughter Zora Carswell born 17 July 1889, ditto
- Daughter Eliza E Carswell born May 1892, North Carolina
- Son Dean S Carswell born January 1894, North Carolina
- Daughter Tinnie Carswell Spencer born 29 Jun 1899, North Carolina
Now here is the thing about the Peru Probate. It was not probated in London until 1932. Now I have heard
of the Ghost and Mrs. Muir, but all of his North Carolina children were born after he was dead. And
a wife married in California returning to North Carolina to have a dead man's children for nearly
20 years? Some things just are not adding up. Especially when the marriage and children are all to the
same wife, Julia Addeline Butler.
Well either the well of 1932 was quickly put together after such a long departure of a brother to
over seas. And perhaps the brother just did not die but ended up in North America, be it from
coast to coast as it were. Did John Raby Carswell run away to over seas? Did his family in England
finally give in and fabricate a will after not ever hearing from him? Is their two John Raby Carswell
men?
Perhaps your dreams are really real? Maybe Jane chased off to America and had four children and then
rushed back to England just so she could be single and unmarried for both the 1881 and 1891 census
over in England? (See: Carswell Mystic)
