EDGECOMBE / EDGCOMB of A L T A R N U N
EDGECOMBE / EDGCOMBE / EDGCOMB:
The name comes in various forms and spellings, only a few of
which are listed above. The word comes from the Olde English
'ecg-cum' and it means 'a village or hamlet on the edge of
the valley, glen or even slade.' It is a most commonly found
in the 'West Country' region, that is the country where the
Celtic clans where pushed into. The more famous origins are
associted with the 'Edgecombe' family of 'Mount Edgecumbe',
though there are other places in both Devon and Cornwall that
have historically born that name. I suppose that is it not
important whether the Edgcumbe family of Cornwall is related
to the Edgecumbes of Mount Edgecumbe or not. Certainly in
there past they carry a number of the same family names such
as 'George'. What is important is finding one's correct
ancestors whoever they may be.
Our own family connections to Edgcombe in two families of
Edgcombes who's fathers are named Christopher, father and
son families.

*** This family relationship would be 'step-siblings' - brothers and sisters. |
As an example of just how closely this 'family relationship' was being taken, one |
should read the will of Thomas Hender, the then husband of Ebbett, for the house |
and residence seems to be in the hands of his children with the step grandmother |
going to be living with them I would suppose until she did die in 1771, that is |
a mere fours years time. |

* The family relationship here, other than becoming husband and wife, is that they
would be 'step-first cousins'. So certainly the families would have associations and
be very much aware of each other.
** The family dates seem to have been a bit muddled whether it be from such as the number '6' and
'8' having become confused as eights often looked like sixes and visa versa or even by the facts
of private baptism having to have been later ratified and accepted into the congregation of the
church at later dates. At least John Edgcombe and Annabella Edgcomb the first born daughter by
that name seem to have duplicated records due to some such record recording and/or transcription
variances.

William Hender and Annabella Edgcomb Family
There is no close biological relationship between William Hender and Annabella Edgcomb.
But certainly there is a 'family' based association between the two. Ebbet Scantlebury
was Annabella's biological Grandmother AND Ebbet Scantlebury was also William Hender's
'Step Grandmother'. She had married Christopher Edgcomb and had children including
Christopher Edgcomb (jr), the father of Annabella Edgcomb. When Christopher Edgcomb died,
Ebbet [Scantlebury] Edgcomb then married Thomas Hender as his second wife as well, and as
such she became John Hender's step-mother and John Hender was William Hender's father, thus
Ebbet was thus also William Hender's step-grandmother. What it amounts to is that these
two families had 'family' ties even before the marriage of William Hender, son of John
Hender and Grace Luskey, to Annabella Edgcomb who was biological granddaughter to Ebbet.
What the result was is that between William Hender inheriting from his own Hender family,
his mother's Luskey family and his wife's Edgcomb family, William and Annabella had funds
of a small fortune with which to invest in the furture of their only son William Hender,
who went to medical school and had training to became a medical surgeon.

* William Hender, Surgeon was of Callington at the same time that his Cousin William
Hender the Watch and Clockmaker of Callington lived their, the Watch and Clockmaker
being my 3rd Great Grandfather. As they had both married and Elizabeth, there has been
some confusion and a number of mistakes in assumed genealogies that have not been
carefully studied and sorted out. If fact there were many William and Elizabeth Hender
families at that particular time in Cornwall from nearby Launceston to St Cleer and so
forth including that of my 3rd great granduncle William Worth Hender who married Elizabeth
Tresize. (See Errors on Ancentry,
William Bury Hender, and
Many William and Elizabeth Hender Families.)
