             CHAPTER 13

Abinadi is protected by divine power—He teaches the Ten Commandments—Salvation does not come by the law of Moses alone—God himself shall make an atonement and redeem his people. [About 148 B.C.]

1 AND now when the king had heard these words, he said unto his priests: Away with this fellow, and slay him; for what have we to do with him, for he is amad.
2 And they stood forth and attempted to lay their hands on him; but he withstood them, and said unto them:
3 aTouch me not, for God shall smite you if ye lay your hands upon me, for I have not delivered the message which the Lord sent me to deliver; neither have I told you that which ye brequested that I should tell; therefore, God will not suffer that I shall be destroyed at this time.
4 But I must fulfil the commandments wherewith God has commanded me; and because I have told you the truth ye are angry with me. And again, because I have spoken the word of God ye have judged me that I am mad.

 1a John 10:20 (19-20)
 3a 1 Ne. 17:48
   b Mosiah 12:20-24

5 Now it came to pass after Abinadi had spoken these words that the people of king Noah durst not lay their hands on him, for the Spirit of the Lord was upon him; and his face ashone with exceeding lustera, even as Moses' did while in the mount of Sinai, while speaking with the Lord.
6 And he spake with apower and authority from Goda; and he continued his words, saying:
7 Ye see that ye have not power to slay me, therefore I finish my amessage. Yea, and I perceive that it cuts you to your hearts because I tell you the truth concerning your iniquities.

By the Power of God
God had given Abinadi a mission and a message to fulfill. Until that message was delivered and his mission complete, the power of God did protect Abinadi. And then it was the purpose of the Lord to allow the agency of man to be exercised that the works of man might condemn themselves. That is, the ripeness of the iniquity of the wicked priests and also King Noah had to come to its full extreme that the judgement and justice of God might be exercised upon them.
 5a the Spirit of the Lord was upon him; and his face shone with exceeding luster The glory of the Spirit of the Lord does show forth upon and/or from with a person when they do speak in the fulness of the power of God before man. Now not all messages delivered by God's servants will have such a lusterous presence. But in the case of Abinadi it was exercised as an added witness to the words of his mouth that they were from God against those to whom they were delivered. But still those of darkness comprehendeth it not.
 6a he spake with power and authority from God They who speak by the power and authority from God do so by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is counted to be as the words of angels unto those to whom they are declared. Yea, they are scripture to those to whom they are delived. For they are the word of God. And if those who do hear such words do harden their hearts and do stop up their ears that they will not hear, then the words will stand as a testimony against them for so disguarding the word of God, that message which was given of God unto them. And it is a voice of warning unto repentance that they that do hear may be called unto repentance or have a witness against them according to their wickedness.

8 Yea, and my words fill you with wonder and amazement, and with anger.
9 But I finish my message; and then it amatters not whither I go, if it so be that I am saved.
10 But this much I tell you, what you ado with me, after this, shall be as a atype and a shadow of things which are to comea.

 10a a type and a shadow of things which are to come Abinadi's death would not only be a witness against the wickedness of King Noah, his priests and his people, but they would be a prophecy in type as future events concerning this people and what would happen to then because of what they would do to a prophet of the Lord. It reflects the golden rule, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' And in this respect what they would do unto Abinadi would likewise be that which would foreshadow what would be done unto them. This is a form of direct recipical justice, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But also in the case of Abinadi's death, it would be the same type of death that later even the faithful of the descendants of this people of would suffer at the hands of this people (See Mosiah ---- & Alma -----).    9a Daniel 3:16-18

11 And now I read unto you the remainder of the acommandments of God, for I perceive that they are not written in your heartsa; I perceive that ye have studied and taught biniquity the most part of your lives.
12 And now, ye remember that I asaid unto you: Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of things which are in heaven above, or which are in the earth beneath, or which are in the water under the earth.

 11a I perceive that they are not written in your hearts What is written in the fleshy tablets of the heart, that which is within a man, what they truly are within themselves, is what men will be judged upon. Laws of performances and carnal commandments are such outward actions, but it is what is in the heart of a man which is the truth of what that man is or is not. And God looketh upon the hearts of men to see the true and real intent there in.  11a Ex. 20:1-17

13 And again: Thou shalt not abow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me;
14 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
15 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him aguiltless that taketh his name in vain.

16 Remember the asabbath day, to keep it holy.

18 But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
19 For in asix days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

25 And it came to pass that after Abinadi had made an end of these sayings that he said unto them: Have ye ataught this people that they should observe to do all these things for to keep these commandments?
26 I say unto you, Nay; for if ye had, the Lord would not have caused me to come forth and to prophesy evil concerning this people.
27 And now ye have said that salvation cometh by the law of Moses. I say unto you that it is expedient that ye should akeep the law of Moses as yet; but I say unto you, that the time shall come when it shall bno more be expedient to keep the law of Moses.

 27a 2 Ne. 25:24
     b 3 Ne. 9:19-20; 3 Ne. 15:4 (2-10)

28 And moreover, I say unto you, that asalvation doth not come by the blaw alonea; and were it not for the catonementb, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Mosesb.
29 And now I say unto you that it was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very astrict law; for they were a stiffnecked people, bquick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God;
30 Therefore there was a alaw given them, yea, a law of performances and of bordinancesa, a law which they were to cobserve strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of Goda and their duty towards him.

 28a salvation doth not come by the law alone The salvation and exaltation of man is contingent upon two things, one is the Atonement of Christ and the other is the performance of righteousness of good works upon the part of man. All men sin and they cannot remove those sins from themselves, thus they stand as lost souls before God because of their natural and carnal natures brought about by the fall of Adam. But those sins can be removed and men can be raised from death because of the atonement and resurrection of Christ. The Book of Mormon states that 'men are saved by the grace of Christ after all they can do.'
 28b were it not for the atonement ... they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses The Apostle Paul, who continually had to preach to the traditions of the Jews that held that salvation came by living the Law of Moses, had to often take the extreme perspective position that men would be totally lost if not for the atonement of Christ regardless of any degree of performances and keeping the commandments of the Law of Moses. He had to state over and over again that the Law of Moses, the keeping of those laws and commandments DID NOT bring salvation. Salvation was to be found only in and through Jesus Christ. And that the way provided by Jesus Christ was the only way were by men could be saved, there was NO OTHER WAY.
A simple way of considering the matter is that all men will live again and be resurrected because of the atonement and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, to be brought to stand before God that they might be judged. Thus to that extent all men are saved and only in Jesus Christ are they so saved. Then according to the degree of men's faith in Christ and their living lifes of righteousness in the Lord and to the degree of their good works and desires of their hearts, they are so judged to various degrees and levels of glory. And for those who walk and live according the the fulness of the law in Christ, that is by his prescribed ordinances, principles, precepts, laws and commandments, in doing good unto all men and enduring to the end; these may be judged to receive a fulness of God, becoming one with Christ and the Father to live AS GOD IS in that Celestial Glory, the highest of glory in the presence of God forever.
 30a a law of performances and of ordinances ... to keep them in remembrance of God The Law of Moses beyond the basic commandments of God, was those laws regaurding the ordiances and performances of sacrifice and the times of gatherings to the temple to observe the 'feast days' of the law. We today no longer keep these ordiances and performances of the Law of Moses, or animal sacrifice, and the seasonal feast gatherings. But we do fulfill the law. Each spring about the time of the Passover, we hold our anual conference where we come and gather and feast upon the word of the Lord from his apostles and prophets. And in the autumn at the feast of the harvest, we come again in October we come to the semi-anual conference again to feast upon the word of the Lord. We perform the ordiances of the fulness of the Gospel in our temples to day, which take one through the veil of the temple by the power of the name and atonement of Christ. Such were the ordiances of the temple of old, committing the people to live according to the commandments and laws of God, and the receiving of the atonement of Christ in the plan of redemption, which was the form and type of the ordinance of the Day of Atonement of the temple of Old.

31 But behold, I say unto you, that all these things were atypes of things to comea.
32 And now, did they aunderstand the law? I say unto you, Nay, they did not all understand the law; and this because of the hardness of their hearts; for they understood not that there could not any man be saved bexcept it were through the redemption of God.

 31a these things were types of things to come The animal sacrifices were in remembrance of the sacrifice of the Son of God for the sins of the world, particularly in the performances of the Day of Atonement. And in the times and seasons of the 'common' performances they were types as to the redemption of Christ in the healing and blessings to come, healing of men of their afflictions of this life and to the end of the resurrection to come. And all things did but point unto Christ, and none there was that did not have him as the object and end of their performance and worship.  31a Mosiah 16:14; Alma 25:15-16;

33 For behold, did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiaha, and that God should redeem his people? Yea, and even aall the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began—have they not spoken more or less concerning these thingsb?
34 Have they not said that aGod himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth?
35 Yea, and have they not said also that he should bring to pass the aresurrection of the dead, and that he, himself, should be oppressed and afflicted?

 33a did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah The prime purpose of a prophet is to bear witness of Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Savior of the world. And this did Moses do though in today's Old Testament Bible it is not always so clear that he did as many plain and precious things have been removed and hide from us by the Jewish skewed preparation of the record. In the coming forth of the plates of brass it will be seen that Moses did clear prophesy of the coming of the Messiah, even Jesus Christ. Today we may see this in the testament of two other records besides this testament given here in the Book of Mormon, and that is in the New Testament as well as the Pearl of Great Price which is but taken from Joseph Smith's Translation of the Bible.
  :First: In the New Testament it does witness that indeed Moses did bear witness of the Messiah Jesus in various passages as follows below with the testament of the prophets in next section.
 33b all the prophets who have prophecied ever since the world began—have ... spoken more or less concerning these things Certainly this would have included such as Adam (Moses 6:50-51), Enoch (Moses 7:50-53), Noah (Moses 8:23-24), Abraham (John 8:56-58/Helaman 8:16-17), Moses as well as such other prophets as Isaiah and the rest.
    Matthew 1:22-23 from Isaiah 7:14
    Luke 24:27 & 44 (Jesus preached the same)
    John 1:45 (Philip so testifies)
    John 3:14-16 (Moses' serpent testament)
    John 5:46 (Moses wrote of Christ)
    Acts 3:22-26 (Moses & prophets from Samuel)
    Acts 7:37-53 (Moses a type of Christ)
    Acts 26:22-23 (Paul of Moses speaks of Christ)
    Acts 28:23 (Moses by Moses+ teaches Christ)
    Hebrews 9:19-26 (Moses' Law points to Christ)
    Hebrews 11:24-29 (By faith in Christ)
    1 Nephi 22:20-21 (Nephi's testimony)
    2 Nephi 11:4 (All things typifying Christ)
    Jarom 1:11 (Persaudes to look to Messiah)
    Mosiah 3:15 (Law of Moses fulfilled in Christ)
    Mosiah 16:14-15 (Law of Moses a shadow)
    Alma 25:15-16 (How Law of Moses to be kept)
    Alma 33:19-20 (Lack of faith and hard heart)
    Alma 34:7 (Other prophets with Moses testify)
    Helaman 8:16-17/John 8:56-58 (Abraham saw)
    3 Nephi 15:4-5 & 8 (Jesus' own word)
    3 Nephi 20:23 (Jesus is that prophet)
Now last of all we may add to these scriptures the very pattern of the purpose and calling of a prophet in the prophet Lehi. Lehi was commanded of God to warn the people of Jerusalem that it would be destroyed, 'BUT' if they would repent and believe in the coming of Messiah, through him they would be spared. To this the response was very much 'Jewish', they sought to kill the prophet Lehi (See 1 Nephi 1:18-20). And of all these prophets so persecuted by the 'Jewish' Jesus spoke saying: "Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias [John the Baptist's father], which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation." (Luke 11:49-51) And why did the Jewish so seek and kill the prophets even down to Jesus himself, because they would not accept the Messiah as the Son of God though he was with them in person and performed many undeniable miracles among them.
