5 ¶ And they spake unto Moses, saying, The
people abring much more than enough for the service of the
worka,
which the LORD commanded to make.
6 And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.
7 For the astuff they had was
sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.

5a The people bring much more than enough
for the service of the work Now we need not suppose that the
people did lack in thier hearts in devotion unto God. But is was that they
had been steeped in the doctrine of the Egyptians for so long that the Lord
required that they dwell in the wilderness that a new generation which did
not know Egypt would be trained in the ways of the Lord before they came into
the promised land. For the hearts and devotion of he people gave over enough
that they were commanded to stop bringing their offerings unto Moses for the
building of the tabernacle of the Lord. And though the reason which the Lord
gave through Moses for not going into the land was the fear of their leaders,
which were also steeped in the ways of the Egyptians. it would seem that the
common people would have gone anyway if Moses would not have stopped them.
Thus it must be considered that the 40 years in the wilderness was not so
much a punishment of the general populous of the people, for their hearts
were willing, but their minds where not yet trained in the ways of God,
having dwelt so long in Egypt.
