New Testament Commentary ~ Matthew

by Don R. Hender

Gospel Contents

Each of the surviving four Gospel Witnesses and Testimonies were particularly drafted with designed intent. Mark was the record keeper of the First Presidency, and it is considered that his Gospel is reflective of the Witness and Dictates of Peter, it being the 'Official Concise Gospel', the shortest of the four. Therefore it may well be considered the 'Gospel According to Peter'. Luke's Gospel was that which was written to the Gentiles and since Luke worked hand in hand with Paul, it should be considered that Paul directed Luke in its preparation to the Gentiles and had an influence upon it if not directly inputing into it. The Apostle John's Gospel was written for the converted membership of the church and pertains to more of the spiritual matters of the gospel and it is not so historically bound. And then there is Matthew's Gospel.

Matthew's Gospel was directed and written to the Jews. It emphsized Christ's Royal Ancestral lineage by which the Kingdom rightfully belonged to Him. Matthew takes great care in presenting the major events in his witness to the Jews and particularly those which are reflective of the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies. It also places great stress upon the relationships of Christ and the Gospel to that well known and understood Jewish Covenant of Abraham and of course the Laws of Moses.
