Cousins Descended from Thomas Hender and Agnes EvanCompiled and Annotated by Don R. HenderEdward Hender, christened in Altarnun on the 23rd of December, 1693, is the only Hender child of Thomas Hender and Agnes Evan supported by the Altarnun parish record available as of this date. My own known connection through another son, Thomas Hender, son of Thomas Hender and Agnes Even, is supported by the documentation of family wills, particularly that of Thomas Hender himself, who was buried 29 June 1936 and whose whose will was dated 1737 and written 1736. In that will Thomas Hender does not name Agnes/Ann his wife, as she preceeded him in death by two years. He does name his son Edward Hender, Edward's son Edward Hender, Edward's daughter Elizabeth Hender and Edward's wife Elizabeth [Wadge]. Then he goes on to name his other grandchildren, Thomas Hender, John Hender my 5th great grandfather, Ann Hender, and Elizabeth; who are all children of Thomas Hender and his wife Elizabeth Northy, which Thomas Hender, my 6th Great Grandfather, is also in the will named as being son of Thomas Hender, my said 7th Great Grandfather. There is another christening which, given a glergyman's oversight of reverting back to a known prior Edward Hender, perhaps the father of this current Thomas Hender, can account for my ancestor's christening record. The dates of the two christenings fit the birthing pattern of marriage in 1692, first child born in 1693 and second child born in 1695 as being two years apart, which is common to the bearing of children. I have therefore presumed that the case is such in the simple pedigree below.A short simple pedigree of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wadge will first be given.

A first Elizabeth Hender was christened / born 1762 in consequence to the marriage date of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock of 1761. One thought is that they also had a son Edward who married Goyn and they had the second Elizabeth of 1790. This is to be sorted out and determined. Whether parent or grandparent of the Elizabeth Hender born/christened in 1790, Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock do have an invested interest in her whether it be months, years or generation spanning interest. ^^ Now there is a simple solution to this seeming dilima which will be presented below and it has to do with the facts of the details recored in conjunction with the marriage record of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock. This will also be shown on the bottom of the page concerning Edward Hender and Elizabeth Goyn, the ancestors to the Australian Hender family linked to above under note ^. ** The 'Joan Hender' who married Clement Colwill 22 Oct 1753 in Helland, Cornwall, England, who Ancentry.com forces to be Joan Hender of Altarnun, is likely 'Joan Hendra' of Helland whose baptism was recorded on 4 September 1733 at Helland as the daughter of William Hendra Margery Sandy, who some records clerk recorded as 'Hender' rather than 'Hendra' or some transcription/extration clerk read as Hender. Actually the two names are often interchanged in reference to such families in Cornwall either due to hand writing or reading or etc. * This last John Hender of 1795 is specifically stated to be son of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Willcock. That places 'bookends' of marriage and last stated parenthood upon these 9/10 children. There seems to be something strange about this anomaly. (See Edward Hender page) It does happen that a family often has children in a neighboring parishes as it does seem to fit in that the sons and daughter of Edward Hender and Elizabeth could well be those of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock. Also there are but two Edward Hender and Elizabeth marriages in all of Corwall per the OPC marriage listing and that is Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wadge, and Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock. Of course we know that there is Edward Hender and Elizabeth Goyn of Altarnun also. What seems strange, is that the 'last' son's Christening particularly states his parents to be Edward Hender and Elizabeth Willcock. All the other children's Christenings state but Edward and Elizabeth. Some make the Edward Hender (1788) and Elizabeth Hender (1790) the children of Elizabeth Goyn and husband Edward. But the question is, who is to claim the other four children of North Hill? Consistancy is not there for Elizabeth Goyn to, for she was not married until 1782. And if Elizabeth Wilcock does, then there was no real break in child bearing for Elizabeth Wilcock not to claim Edward and Elizabeth of 1788 and 1790 to come before the caboose, John Hender in 1795. My own family has such breaks in it. Two daughters 1924 & 26, a four year break, two more daughters 1930 & 32, then another four year break, 1936 a son, and a three year break, then twins in 1939 and a daughter in 1941, and then a seven year break to 1948 and me. As for Elizabeth Wilcock's first 10 year break, who knows but there are either some unrecorded or unattributed children of theirs in some other parish? They only have but '9 showing' and they do come cheaper by the dozen. But consider the 'Edward Hender page'. Can anyone make something of it?^^ See the solution below. Cousin Richard Hender died the same year he was born. Cousin Edward Hender born 1730 died before his bother Edward was born in 1735 thus the second Edward of this family. As for cousin Joan Hender, who is said to have married Clement Colwill 22 October 1753 in Helland, nothing is currently known of their possible descendants. Helland is more closely to be associated with the Lanivet/Bodmin Henders than the Altarnun Henders and there is the burial date that suggest that Joan also suffered an infant death. Cousin Edward Hender who married Elizabeth Willcock, their two daughters Elizabeth and Mary Hender are not known to have descendants, as also their son John Hender. There is also a possible son Edward Hender of this family. As for cousin Elizabeth Hender who married Richard Northey, a large family of descending cousins maybe derived from her descendants which is best quickly presented in this PDF file. | ||

It is proposed that the solution lies in the record keeping process and
the mixing of apples and oranges as it were. Below are given the transcribed details of the two marriages of
1) Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wilcock in column one and then that marriage 2) of Edward and Elizabeth Goyn in
column three. What fits in between in column two is the presumed solution surmised from the noted details on
the first marriage record and how the name of the groom is listed on the marriage record of the second marriage.
So first the three column solution with the two marriage records and the proposed solution in 'record form'.
That will be followed by a discussion of the situation and how the solution was deduced and arrived at.

The birth/christening record is deduce from the two marriage records on either side. The first marriage record is that of this child's parents. The were in truth married by bands as explained at the bottom of the marriage record in 1759. This leave the 1761 date to be but the birth/christening record of their first child, deduced to be a son named Edward Hender [Wilcock] after his parents and so presented on his marriage record at the right to Elizabeth Goyn. Who else could that child of Altarnun be? The family tree which continues in Australia yields that his name was but 'Edward Hender', thus the Wilcock name would be his mother's. |
Note the parallel of the Banns dating and marriage date with the other record. |
