Twice Over Moon Cousins of Liskeard

Joseph MOON of High Clicker & Susanna MOON of Trewen/Treheer*
and Later Boduel South Is Added in to Boot!

compiled, prepared and presented by Don R. Hender

I've seen so many attempts at thrashing through the various genealogies of Moon, particularly of Liskeard, many of which are poorly and even shamefully compiled and promoted by such as pay services, that I have come to wish that they would let the 'free-way' of the super-highway of the internet information flow and communicate openly rather than attempting to set artificial proprietary bounds of control, which shut down the open exchange of such information out of the equation except as paid for under their control and often according to their error prone take of one's ancestry. I have seen errors and poorly configured ancestry linages put together and held together, kept from the truth of such matters by these interviening 'quick and dirty' genealogy services.

I may not be right all the time either, but at least I would like to have the openness to share without those barriers what I do know, for I've seen so much confusion in people's contrived genealogies, quite often stuck and kept together despite the facts of the matter by such 'pay as you go' genealogy 'services', which claim to help and aid but seem in my eyes but to derail the actual open processes of coming to the truth of the matters. In hope that what I have found and know concerning the Moon families of which I am related to from two different lines, and through cousins most assuredly throughout, I present this fact and source based genealogy of the Moons of High Clicker, Treheer and Boduel to varying extents.

The older Moon cousins relationship has been presumed per the closeness of the histories of the Moon Line of Theophilus Moon and that Moon Line of Cornelius Moon. These later Moon cousins are connected by marriage after what would have to be a number of Moon family generations since the older Moon family/cousin relationship. My own Moon family ancestry / genealogy is that which may represent the Cornelius Moon Family Line as that is from whence I descend. And the Theophilus Moon Family Line is that which I present elsewhere as our first line of Moon Cousins #1. Many migrating Moon families seem to have their descent from that particular Moon Line, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. And of course my own family of Hender came late by way of Canada to Utah, USA, where I am at today.

On this particular page I will attempt to follow that Moon family of Theophilus Moon whose descendant son Joseph Moon of High Clicker did marry into the Moon family of Cornelius Moon, who at the time where either of Trewen or Treheer, the last Cornelius Moon being of Treheer, but she, Susanna Moon was daughter of that Cornelius Moon's father, Edward Moon and his wife Jenny Morshead.

* While her immediate family of father, mother and siblings are identified as being of Trewen of Liskeard, the family of her eldest brother Nicholas Moon becomes associated with being of Greater and Little Treheer.

Joseph Moon of High Clicker and Susanna Moon of Trewen/Treheer

As a part of the proof of this connection is the 1805 will of Robert Moon the son of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead, wherein he references Joseph Moon of High Clicker as the father of his Nephew Charles Moon. Now Robert does not state that his nephew Charles Moon is the son of his sister Susanna Moon for she is at this time of this will deceased, and only Joseph Moon her husband is the living parent of Charles Moon the nephew of Robert.

^Nephew, Cousin & 'Uncle' Charles
This Charles Moon becomes a strong wound 'thread rope' of proof to the family ties of High Clicker and Treween/Treheer. First he is found in the Will of Robert Moon, son of Edward Moon and Jenny Morshead. Charles has a special line of interest to the Trewen/Treheer family in that his mother Susanna Moon, daughter and sister of the Edward Moon family, dies from apparent birth complications with her son Charles Moon. Robert Moon in his will particularly provided for his young nephew Charles Moon son of the living father Joseph Moon of High Clicker. Susanna's mother Jenny [Morshead] Moon also names both Joseph and Charles as grandsons in her will.
Cousin Jane Moon of Treheer, wife of George Raby, has a strong relationship as cousin Charles Moon is found living with her family in East Looe in 1841, and when the family moves to 'Pool Hall' in Menheniot, Charles comes to stay with them even after the death George. Charles Moon is a part of the Jane [Moon] Raby family in 1851 & 1861 also —unmarried cousin Charles Moon, brother of Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker. He associates with his mother Susanna Moon's neice Jane [Moon] Raby of Treheer. [1841, 51, 61-81 records]
* The BT-Bishop's transcript is stated to have read 17 December 1790. Hopefully this will not pop up and cause confusion at some time to invent two Joseph Moons of this one Joseph Moon, son of Joseph Moon and Susanna Moon.
** Since Christian baptism dates of infants is not done on the date of birth but at some time after birth, it is hard to say what exactly occurred in this case. I may well be contributing evidence that Susanna's death was related to the state of her health in conjunction with the child birth of Charles, her last child before her death. Or is may not. Charles was not 'christened' until a month after his mother's death and burial.

Joseph Moon, Esq. and Christiana [Christian] ROGERS
and
Joseph Moon, and Christine Ann Rogers FOOTT

It does appear that this Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker married twice, first to Christiana Rogers in 1813 and then, after her death in 1828, to Christine Ann Rogers FOOTT in 1829. It would seem at his aged position of his second marriage, upon the majority of his eldest son, John Rogers Moon, Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker allowed such position to fall to his son, John Rogers Moon. There are some unanswered items which may have aided in Joseph's decision of positioning his eldest son of his first marriage accordingly, which range from partial retirement to other possible contributing factors. One proof of this arrangement is the 1841 Census record of Jospeh Moon's family recorded at High Lux.

There is some mystery about the two families of Joseph left. In 1841 Census there is a Joseph Moon age 11 with the family but at that age he cannot be son of either wife nor is he of such recorded. As the 1841 Census does not state relationships the question remains.

John Rogers Moon and Elizabeth Moon Family of High Clicker

In the marriage of John Rogers Moon of High Clicker and Elizabeth Moon of Boduel South, we have another joining or rejoining of the separated lines of the Moon family. The Moon family of Boduel is married to that Theophilus Moon line of such as Landrest, Tempellow and Clicker and also as the earlier marriage of 'grandfather' Joseph Moon of High Clicker to Susanna Moon of Trewen/Trehere(Treheer), also that separate line of Cornelius Moon had been brought in together in the one resulting Moon family of High Clicker.

** After the death of her mother, Elizabeth Moon in 1848, Elizabeth Moon (granddaughter) is
to be found with her grandparents at Boduel Soutn on the 1851 Census and only the now widowed
John Rogers Moon of High Clicker and his three sons and daughters Christiana and Mary are left
at High Clicker on the same 1851 Census.
Note: As for further details which the Civil records might add, the death certificate of
Elizabeth Moon and that of any of the children, particularly Christiana and Mary E. Moon could
be found and a certified copy order through the General Registry Office of England. At this
point it is known that William was Christian baptism late at an adult age and the last two
daughter's baptism are not found.

It can only be imagined that the last three births of William in April 1846, Christiana in 1847 and finally Mary E [Elizabeth] in late 1848, did place a strain upon Elizabeth and whether as a part of the last child birth of subsequent rundown health conditions may have contributed to her death in November of 1848. As can be seen by the 1851 & 1871 census records at High Clicker, the family remained in tact and the last born girls lived to full adult age.

rev 16 August 2014

P.S. NOTE: "Sorry 'Charlie Moon'." The evidence I have proves that the Susanna Moon who married Joseph Moon of High Clicker IS NOT daughter of Philip Moon as you had supposed in 2010 on one of those proprietary web-chat groups. I've almost joined such a 'genealogy chat group' but their long list of regulation and legal requirements scare me to death. I'd just rather share my information on the open information web highway where it is free to everyone and they can email me and I can email them. And I don't have to worry about being brought into English Court and pay for any and every infraction of sharing what I have found out at a rate of 50 pounds per infraction if I've shared such 'email' or such 'openly' upon my own designed free web pages. I would suppose and hope by now '2014', you may have advanced your position of understanding, but if not, there are such items as the will of my 5th great uncle Robert Moon who names Joseph Moon of High Clicker in his will as the father of nephew Charles Moon who Robert helps to provide for, Charles being his nephew being the son of his deceased sister Susanna Moon. And it looks to be that her death was associated with nephew Charles' birth [see family chart and information above at beginning of this page]. Joseph Moon [Sr] of High Clicker and Susanna Moon of Trewen/Treheer only had three children before Susanna died. My 5th great grandmother Jenny [Morshead] Moon, wife of Edward Moon, names in her will both sons of Joseph Moon and Susanna Moon, Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker and Charles Moon as her grandchildren, so that means that Susanna Moon, their mother must have been the daughter of Edward Moon and Jenny [Morshead] Moon and NOT of Philip Moon and his wife as you had once proposed in 2010. What further solidifies this family group is what becomes of nephew, grandson, cousin and 'uncle' Charles Moon, second son of Joseph Moon [Sr] of High Clicker and Susanna Moon of Trewen and Treheer. Well, Nicholas Moon, the eldest son of Edward and Jenny Moon, has a daughter named Jane [Jenny] Moon who is Charles Moon's cousin. Jane Moon marries George Raby and her and her husband George Raby and a number of their young children are living in East Looe and appear on the 1841 Census and who is living with them is Charles Moon, her cousin of her deceased aunt and her father Nicholas Moon's sister Susanna Moon. When this family moves to 'Pool Hall' in Menheniot and after George Raby's death, with Jane [Moon] Raby as head of house, there are her children and living with them on the 1851 census is Charles Moon her cousin. He is also still living with them on the 1861 census and they are all still at 'Pool Hall' in Menheniot. On the 1871 Census Jane Raby, Charles Moon's cousin has died, but the Raby family is still living there at Pool Hall and guess what? Sure enough, at age 75 Charles Moon is still living with the family, and I would have to imagine that Jane's family is likely calling 'cousin' Charles Moon by the name of 'Uncle' Charles Moon because of his advanced age and out of respect for their elder relative who is still living with them. And then in 1881, with the younger generation of Jane Raby's children living and heading 'Pool Hall' in Menheniot, yes there is still an 85 year old, now deaf, Charles Moon living with the family, likely known to them a 'great uncle' Charles Moon. Cousin Charles Moon, brother of Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker, never did marry. But he was never a 'free-loader' on the Raby family. Over the years he was listed as having various professions and he was always a 'boarder' with the family, paying his own way and fair share of the household expenses. That year in 1881, nephew, grandson, cousin and 'uncle' Charles Moon would die and be buried at Menheniot and stated as being of 'Pool Hall'.

As an added NOTE of interest to some Moon family researchers ought to be the fact that on that same 1881 census, a son and daughter of John Rogers Moon of High Clicker and Elizabeth Moon of Boduel South, which John Rogers Moon is the son of Joseph Moon [Jr] of High Clicker and his first wife Christiana Deeble Rogers, have moved together and are now living at 'Bolitho', Charles Moon 37 and Christian Moon 33. He is there a Farmer employing 2 men and 2 boys. He likely becomes the start of the four generations of Moons who have ran the Bolitho Farm until this time and date today. It was John Rogers Moon of Joseph Moon [Jr]'s first marriage who became of High Clicker. And his second son Charles of his with Elizabeth Moon of Boduel South has done well at Bolitho and his posterity remains. Final note: in 1891 Charles Moon 47, son of John Rogers Moon, is at Bolitho with wife Sarah and two sons, Charles J. Moon 5 and George M. Moon 1. It appears likely from such parish records that Sarah is Sarah Mary Mason of Callington, daughter of John George Mason, Gentleman — to which marriage sister Christiana Moon was a listed witness. (George Mason Moon died at age 3, 21 Dec, 1892, res Menheniot, bur. Liskeard.)
