Commentary Notes

It is entries such as these which support that Philip Trout's father is Philip Trout and who his children are though in 1841 relationships are not given (See Trout Page).

In combination with Nicholas Moon's will, bother of Susannah (Moon) Trout, the wife of Philip Trout, which names as his four nieces Susan Raby, Charlotte Raby, Jane Raby, and Fannay Raby along with his nephew George Raby that solidifies that this is Raby family of his sister's marriage to George Raby, who is also named in his will as George Raby of Keverall (see: Nicholas Moon will). And further family ties found on the Moon page explains Charles Moon to be Jane (Moon) Raby's uncle and the presence of Mary Trout, the daughter of Jane's sister Susanna (Moon) Trout.

Next is the family of Richard Olver with his wife 'Amelia (Hender) Olver who is named in her father's will as his daughter Amelia Olver. In future census dates Louisa Hender, Amelia's sister, will be seen living with this family.

So now where is Thomas Rowe Hender and family in 1841? While Mary Trout is age 13 and visiting at her aunt Jane Raby's household in East Looe, it appears that Thomas Hender, watchmaker 'rounded' to age 15, is in Liskeard boarding at the residence of a 'hostler' with other journeymen and such trained apprentices in their new professions. Liskeard is 'Moon' family country and Thomas Hender is living next door to a Thomas Moon family with several other Moon families about, including the Moons of Greater Treheer and Little Treheer, the Moon family of Mary's mother, Susanna Moon Trout.

William Worth Hender is in North Hill working at being an apprentice Sadler. Louisa is a Grocer in Callington. Amelia we've already seen as wife of Richard Olver in East Looe. And for mom and pop, they are in Stoke Climsland, Venterdon both at 'rounded' ages of 50.

Raby and Moon families are not found in East Looe as they have moved to
'Pool Hall' Menheniot. Still a lot of Toms families. A couple
of Wynhall families and some Rowe families are listed but no identifiable
connects. Note that Philip Trout my 3rd Great Grandfather is not included
in this year's census with his father and his daughter, but Jane being
mentioned as the grand daughter further establishes this relationship and
Philip Trout my 3rd great grandfather will be listed in the 1861 census. He
just must be away, perhaps at an auction?

Here the Thomas (Rowe) Hender family is listed showing his two sons and just down the street is his daughter Ellen with her aunt Sarah/Susan (per the transcription error) Trout. She is the daughter of Philip Trout the 'Auctioneer' and the sister of Mary (Anna Trout) Hender.

Mary's sister Jane Trout is also living on that street with her and Mary's grandfather, Philip Trout. Philip Trout their father, the 'shipping agent' is in Plymouth, Devon at 'Charles The Martyr parish', likely doing business away from home.

And next we again have Richard Olver and Amelia (Hender) Olver's family with two new daughters and Ameila's and Thomas Rowe Hender's sister Louisa Hender visiting and living with them. William Hender, also a Clockmaker, the father of Thomas Rowe Hender, Amelia (Hender) Olver and Louisa Hender, had just passed away at age 60 on the 5th of August 1848. ~ See Hender History

Jane [Moon] Raby and cousin - uncle Charles Moon have gone to 'Pool Hall' Menheniot.

One Moon family is listed (Jame Moon and daughter Maria), no known
relationship. Lots of Toms families, some Rowe families, one Moon family, no
Raby family is listed. Harry Hender, son of Thomas Rowe Hender and Mary Anna
(Trout) Hender was born 1855 and died 1858, Thomas Rowe Hender seems to have
died about the same time? Mary Anna (Trout) Hender remarried and is living
with her new husband Robert Wynhall and her three surviving children.

Now in the 1861 Census Philip Trout the Auctioneer is back and now listed as Ship Agent. The 1841 census had failed to note his birth place as being Halberton, Devon. But he is living with his daughter Jane Trout who had at the time of the 1851 census been listed with her grandfather Philip Trout who seems to now have likely passed away.

Louisa Hender is living with her sister Amelia Olver's family which has two more children.

Thomas Row Hender appears to have passed away, perhaps with about the time his son Harry Hender did, as Harry died at age 2-3 years and never does make a census record appearance. Mary (Trout) Hender, Thomas Rowe Hender's wife, has remarried to Robert Wynhall and they have all three of Mary's Hender children living with them and being named as sons and daughter 'inlaw' in respect to the head of house Robert Wynhall.

The Hender brothers, Philip Trout Hender and William Hender do not make the 1871 Looe Census record for whatever reason. Perhaps they are fishing? Philip Trout, my 3rd great grandfather is now living with the family of Robert Wynhall and his daughter Mary (Trout) (Hender) Wynhall though he is listed merely as a 'Boardr'. Mary and Robert have had two sons, half brothers to their Hender brothers. Louisa Hender now has her own residence but does live on the same street of her sister Amelia Olver and sister inlaw Mary Wynhall.

The oldest son of Richard and Amelia Olver reappears living on Fore Street with his wife and has named his first two children Amelia and Richard after his parents.

As for Ellen Hender, Philip Trout Hender and William Hender's sister, she is no longer a Hender. She appears living on Chapel Street with her husband James Toms, a Fisherman, no less, and a baby son named Regenall Toms.

And while Philip Trout Hender and William Hender are not in the census of Looe, we can check in on William's future wife's family living in West Looe on Market Street. There Selina Toms can be seen living with her four brothers and two sisters in the family of William and Maria Toms.

On Castle Street still lives great aunt Louisa Hender. The Wynhall family and her sister inlaw Mary Wynhall has moved to Church End. But her neice Ellen (Hender) Toms still lives on the street with more children, a house full no less. Her nephew Philip Trout Hender has married and has a son Albert Hender who lives on Middle Market Street with his mother Grace (Chipman) (Hender) Collins, and her new husband William T. Collins. Philip Trout Hender has died, living only some 6 months beyond his son Albert's birth.

As for the Wynhall household, it seems that Mary Anna (Trout) (Hender) Wynhall is living in a house of Fishermen, her husband and two sons aged 18 and 15.

Over in West Looe is living now Selina Hender with her two children Adela and new son William Hender. William Hender my 2nd great uncle, the brother of Philip Trout Hender and Ellen Toms, is a Seaman and is not at home, but likely out at sea?

The Toms family continues to grow with Ellen L (Hender) Toms now age 43, the same age as her census listed backward aging Maryaina (Trout) (Hender) Wynhall mother. Mary Wynhall and her two sons are back on Castle Street. Visiting 43 years old Mary Wynhall is her granddaughter Laura (Lora) Toms the daughter of Mary's daughter Ellen Toms, who is also 43 years old. The Olver family of sister inlaw Amelia Olver and her sister inlaw Louisa Hender are gone/missing. And Mary Wynhall is listed as a widow. But some might think a suspicious circumstance does exist on Chapel Street where lives one aged Robert Wynhall with very young ?twin? daughters age 5 (NO the baptisms of the two girls at St. Martins Looe are separated by year dates), Florence and Emily. He has a 'servant' living there listed at age 21, before his daughters where the wife ought to be, a Minnie Taylor is likely more a nanny.

Next we find that William Hender, the brother of Philip Trout Hender, and Ellen (Hender) Toms, has moved from West Looe to Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey, and is no longer a mere fisherman or sea man but an employee of HM Coast Guard.

Now the truth of the matter is this, the burial record states that Robert Pope Wynhall age 70 of East Looe was buried the 27th day of February, 1890. That's the fact. But this is Cornwall, and the Census Record also is mighty suspicious with a Robert Wynhall age 68 living with two Wynhall dauthers age 5. As many a ghost story abounds in these Cornish lands its hard to say it isn't Wynhall's ghost back with his daughter after dying and being buried in 1891. More logically this is Robert's living son's girls with Robert's age being either mis-recorded or mis-read by an extractor.
