CHAPTER 2
Satan obtains leave from the Lord to afflict Job physically—He is smitten with boils—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zopher come to comfort him. |

  1 AGAIN there was a day when the asons [children] of God came
to present themselves before the LORD, and bSatan came also among them to present
himself before the LORD.
  2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.   3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a aperfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and bescheweth evil? and still he choldeth fast his dintegrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. |

  4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his alife.   5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will acurse thee to thy face.   6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine ahand; but save his life. |

  7 ¶ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with asore bboils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.   8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the aashes. |

  9 ¶ Then said his wifea unto him, Dost thou still aretain thine bintegrity? ccurse God, and die.   10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive agood at the hand of God, and shall we not receive bevil? In all this did not Job asin with his lipsa.

9aThen said his wife A wife's love or any person, one for
another, has the hardest of times to see the one they do love suffer. While the suffering and physical
pain is felt by the one, the smypathy, grief and the wanting to see the end of one so loved's pain and
suffering can become overwhelming and unbearable. To helplessly stand by without anything that one can do
can bring to the surface many such feelings, even unto considering it better that the sufferer would die
to so relieve themselves of such intense suffering. What is further interesting here is a parallel with
Adam and Eve. Satan was told by God that he could not inflect Job unto death, so what does Satan do but
to use Job's wife to 'tempt' Job into taking his own life are succumbing unto such as death. The fight to
live can so be effect by the surrounding people such as wife, family and friends. And Satan uses that peer
presure to get people to do such as that which on their own they would not do. Lucifer did this same type
of thing when he arranged for it to be Eve to be the one who would bring Adam around to partaking of the
forbidden fruit, which Adam on his own would not have done. 10a sin with his lips Satan does not have to know the mind of man and he thus is not able to know a man's heart of mind. Only the Lord God does reserve this power unto himself to know of a man's heart and mind and soul. Thus it seems that this particular was the cause of the wording in this verse that 'Job did not sin with his lips'. That is in this phrasing is reserved but unto God to know of the mind of Job and Satan was only to hear what Job actually said openly. It is not to say that Job 'may' have cursed under his breath or perhaps the thought of it did not temp his mind, but after the processing of the whole of it within, Job's outward expression was still one of integrity. The struggle within is that in the testing and Job still won that struggle. |

  11 ¶ Now when Job's three afriends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.   12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.   13 So they sat down with him upon the ground aseven days and seven nightsa, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his bgrief was very great. |
13a they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights For 24-7, Job's worthy friends did sit and mourn with him. Who has such friends today? Who would take the time from their schedule to be with a friend, by his side 24 hours a day for seven days a week. In today's vernacular we easily say 24-7 as if it is a newly constructed term of fulltime, 100% committment to an undertaking. Well, it seem that such was a level of committment first so stated in the Bible and in the book of Job. Job's three friends were fulltime, fullterm committed friends, day and night 7 days of the week. That is a 24-7 friendship. These were Job's good friends! |
