CHAPTER 18 Jesus institutes the sacrament among the Nephites—They are commanded to pray always in his name—Those who eat his flesh and drink his blood unworthily are damned—The disciples are given power to confer the Holy Ghost.[A.D. 34] |
||
1 AND it came to pass that Jesus commanded his Disciples that
they should bring forth some abread and wine unto him.
2 And while they were gone for bread and wine, he commanded the multitude that they should sit themselves down upon the earth. 3 And when the Disciples had come with abread and wine, he took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and he gave unto the Disciples and commanded that they should eat.

4 And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that
they should give unto the multitude.
5 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, he said unto the Disciples: Behold there shall one be aordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall bbreak cbread and bless it and give it unto the people of my dchurch, unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name. 6 And this shall ye always observe to ado, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you. 7 And this shall ye do in aremembrance of my bbodya, which I have shown unto you. And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember meb. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with youc.
|
7a this shall ye do in remembrance of my
body The Lord did sacrifice himself, that is his life, his body
of flesh unto death though not deserving death or having to die other than
for us in performing the work of the atonement. True he had the capacity to
die inheireted from Many, but he had the ability to live for ever from his
Father. And he chose to die for us that we through him might live unto him
and rise again.
7b it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me We do witness unto the Father that we are willing to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, the name of the Son. That we do accept him as our Lord, Savior and Redeemer; that we are his, his people, Israel, Zion even Jerusalem. 7c if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you In always remembering him, we do remember what and who he is, that we are his disciples, that we do take his image upon us, striving to become even as he and his Father in Heaven are; thus becoming Even As God Is. |

8 And it came to pass that when he said these words, he commanded his
Disciples that they should take of the awine of the cup and
drink of it, and that they should also give unto the multitude that they
might drink of it.
9 And it came to pass that they did so, and did drink of it and were filled; and they gave unto the multitude, and they did drink, and they were filled. 10 And when the disciples had done this, Jesus said unto them: Blessed are ye for this thing which ye have done, for this is fulfilling my commandments, and this doth witness unto the Father that ye are awilling to do that which I have commanded youa.
|
10a this doth witness unto the Father that ye are willing to do that which I have commanded you This is a present context meaning that whatsoever the Lord does reveal unto man by the spirit of the Holy Ghost, men are willing to do. That is that 'they are' willing to walk in the way of the Lord, looking to him as their guide unto the Father, the one and only sure way to God. |

do it in aremembrance of my bblood, which

12 And I give unto you a commandment that ye shall do these things. And if ye shall always do these things blessed are ye, for ye are built upon my arock. 13 But whoso among you shall do amore or less than these are not built upon my rock, but are built upon a sandy foundation; and when the rain descends, and the floods come, and the winds blow, and beat upon them, they shall bfall, and the cgates of hell are ready open to receive them.

which the Father hath commanded me that I should give unto you.
15 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and apray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him. 16 And as I have prayed among you even so shall ye pray in my achurch, among my people who do repent and are baptized in my namea. 1a hold up your light that it may shine

covenant Israel is that light and that Ensign unto the world as they are in
and of Jesus Christ, having that image and countanence upon them. Showing
forth that example whereby men might come to know in whom they must seek to
obtain eternal life.
1b I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do Yea, it is Christ, that is Christ in us, which is that light. In that we are to do all that we have seen Christ do. And this is the way, the truth and the light which is to shine forth unto the whole earth, that in none but Jesus Christ is salvation to come. We are his living witness, righteous Israel, the covenant people of the everlasting covenant, come forth to the fulfillment of the promised covenant of the Father from before the foundations of the world, though Adam and the father til Abraham and even til Joseph of Egypt and down and through his seed unto all the ends of the earth to the fulfilling of that covenant promise least the earth be cursed and utterly wasted. 1c I have prayed unto the Father |

36 And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of these
sayings, he touched with his ahand the Disciples whom he
had chosen, one by one, even until he had touched them all, and spake unto
them as he touched them.
37 And the multitude heard not the words which he spake, therefore they did not bear record; but the Disciples bare record that he gave them apower to give the bHoly Ghosta. And I will show unto you chereafter that this record is true.
|
37a he gave them power to give the Holy Ghost Now whether this was giving of the priesthood or whether is was giving of the authorization to so perform this ordinance, it is not clear. But since certain of these would have suredly held the priesthood prior to this, it might well be considered that this was of the nature of an 'authorization' rather than an ordaining unto the higher priesthood. Though a man might be a priest, elder or high priest, he does not go forth and perform the ordinance of baptism and comfirmation of the Holy Ghost except as 'authorized' by one in authority. That authorization is not a new ordaining, for the man held the priesthood prior. But it is giving of the authority, the giving of the authorization to so go forth and baptize and to bestow the Holy Ghost. |
