Old Testament Commentary - Isaiah 13/2 Nephi 23

by Don R. Hender

The 'familiar' basis of Babylon is used by comparison to the latter-day 'wicked', which is called by the name of Babylon. Just as Babylon of old it the image of the wicked so it is used to represent the wicked in the last days and using that connection the fate of the wicked in the last days is set forth.

Destruction of Babylon is a type of destruction at Second Coming—It shall be a day of wrath and vengeance—Babylon (the world) shall fall forever—Compare 2 Nephi 23.

             CHAPTER 23

Destruction of Babylon is a type of destruction at Second Coming—It shall be a day of wrath an vengeance—Babylon (the world) shall fall forever—Compare Isaiah 13. [Between 559 and 545 B.C.]

Babylon in actual physical terms is Modern Iraq. Some of the destruction of the 'wicked world' seems but a type of destroying wickedness, and some seems to be referencing actual temporal events in relationship to 'Babylon'. This is in the Book of Mormon as it is very much a part of the blessing of the covenant of Abraham going forth to the world and the destruction of wickedness within it.
1 aTHE bburden of cBabylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
2 Lift ye up a abanner upon the high bmountain, cexalt the voice unto them,
shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the noblesa.

2a shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles The Lord had openned may doors to many nations and diplomacy has been the means by which the General Authorities have gained access to these nations, by a hand shake has access been obtained to noble peoples of the world who are called from the fields of harvest. Though but one perspective, it is a faithful account of the access of the Lord's army, his missionaries into the nations of the world.

1 aTHE burden of bBabylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high
mountain, exalt the voice unto them,  ashake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.

High on the mountain top A banner is unfurled. Ye nations, now look up; It waves to all the world. In Deseret's sweet, peaceful land, On Zion's mount behold it stand! ~ Hymn 5 - Joel H. Johnson

9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall adestroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be adarkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will apunish the bworld for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the chaughtiness of the eterrible.

12 I will make a aman more precious than fine golda; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

12a I will make a man more precious than fine gold Because of the extent of the wars and destrution, the relative population of the men compared to the women will be such that men will become a rare commodity especially the young men. And several women will ' have to cling unto one man in order to be so ascribed unto the eternal commision and commandment of God.

22a I will be merciful unto my people but the wicked shall perish This is the 'bottomline' or the central theme of the message, that the Lord will destory the wicked who is named by the name of Babylon; while at the same time the Lord will be merciful and preserve his people, the righteous of the Lord. Both shall be in the world together, but they will be distinguished one from the other even as the members of the church are among all nations but are distinguished by the name which they take upon themselves which is the name of Jesus Christ.
