Callington: The Cross-Roads of Eastern Cornwall
Compiled and Annotated by Don R. Hender
Not because Callington is a small place, but that it is a cross-roads of
commerce, families and people find their way to, through and about
Callington. My own Hender family out of Altarnun and one of my so related
lines also out of Altarnun, found their way into and about Callington among
others. I will begin with presenting that which I know, and it has caused
some confusion, as there are but four William and Elizabeth Hender families
of mine, among some others, who are living in and about Callington at about
the same time. And many of attempted to sort them out, particularly to
attempting to determine wherer and if they connect. Thus I will attempt to
clear that part of that riddle up by first looking at my Altarnun Hender
families who have transversed Callington.
And then there is also connected to my family my 3rd Great Grandfather's cousin, who was
also then living in Callington, he being William Hender the son of William Hender and
Annabella Edgecoumbe, who was in turn the son of John Hender and Grace Luskey. Now my
3rd Great Grandfather's cousin, William Hender had married one Elizabeth Bury apparently
of Crediton for they is were he married her. And cousin William Hender and Elizabeth
Bury give birth to a son named William Bury Hender there in Callington where William
Bury Hender was Christianed or Infant Baptized at the Callington Parish.
Now, of course, there are other Hender families in and about Callington which
are not my closely related ones. These I will now attempt to continue explore
with that information that I have collected and at my resources. One William
Hender and Elizabeth is actually of Launceston so go see William Hender who
married Elizabeth Ann Peter there.
There is also to be found another William Hender and Elizabeth Jane family of
St Cleer who many have sought for in the wrong places so see them
here. And then there
is another William Hender family who is in the Callington area for one census,
but he came out of St Neot. His wife's name is Ann and I'll present his
family below as many seem to be looking to sought him out as well.
A One Legged Mine Engine Driver?
Often people consider a handicapped person unemployable. But that depends
much upon the attitude taken by the handicapped. Many a pirate sailed the
seas with a peg leg. But could a mine engine driver opperate his duty with
but one leg. That is a question which depends upon where to look for the
following William Hender. In the one case the facts would seem to favor a
connection to William Hender of St
Neot son of John Hender and Margaret (Langsford) Hender. And on
the other, if one does consider that a 'peg leg' is prohibitive of of engine
driving then one must search elsewhere but where for there is found no other
match. As last seen of William Hender upon the St Neot page, he is or reported
age 24 living with his brother John Hender and his brother Thomas Hender, both
mine workers and he being reported as having a lost leg (follow him in the
above St Neot link). If William Hender, son of John and Margaret is the same
William Hender throughout, I currently think he to be so, then he does
consistantly appear in all the census records from 1841 when but a 'farm
labourer' on a 'next door' farm with his parents just a 'few doors' away,
at age 14, to being on the 1851 census with his two brothers John and Thomas,
Charles having previously passed away. Those census records may be seen on
the already cited St Noet page. As for the census records from 1861 to 1901,
just prior to his death in 1902, I will supply the reference to where each
is found and a composite piture of William Hender and family which is
derived there from below.

William's first four children are born in Menheniot so it logically follows
that one well may find him with wife Ann upon the Menheniot Census in 1861.
Appearently he has not let his lost leg keep him down as he is married with
four children, Rosina 5, Charles 3, Thomas 2 and Emmaline 6m. Both William
and Ann are recorded as age 35 at 'Venton' and thus 'born' about 1826
(1861-35). Only Rosina's baptism is to be found recorded via OPC Cornwall.
There on her father William is listed as a Miner. And Ann is listed as her
mother.
On the 1871 Census, both William and Ann are transcribed as age 47, a 12 year
jump but not concerning. Ros(e)ina's name picks up an 'e' in the middle but
her age is consistent at 15, Charles is 1 year up to 14, Thomas age is
consistent at 12, Emmaline M Hender is missing perhaps deceased, and there is
a birth gap of about 5 years, then sons John at 5, Joseph at 3 and Walter at
age 1 are reported on the 1871 census of Callington as they have relocated to
'Parkfield' Callington. William Hender, father, is still listed as Engine
Driver and of St Neot.
By the 1881 Census the family has moved again to St Ive and are of 'Pensilva'.
William is back down two years to 55 and Ann is even down 3 to 54. Both are
still of St Neot and Charlestown respectively. William's occupation title is
consistent with but the word 'Mine' Engine Driver added. None of the older
children born in Menheniot are listed with the family and only sons John
age 15, Joseph 13 and Walter 11 are listed all consistent in age with prior
census. The family birth production seems to have ended and whether or not
a child or two are missed, having not made the census is not here determined.
1991 Census finds only William and Ann Hender at home of 'Princes Row'
Pensilva. Ages age consistent with 1861, 1881 and making the 1871 the odd
out as they are both listed at age 65. William is still as of St Neot but
Ann is listed as of St Ausle (Austle/Austell) Cornwall. But Charlestown is
centrally located in the 'St Austell District' so nothing really inconsistent.
William has left working at the mines as an engine driver and is listed as
a Boot and Shoe Dealer, likely in 'transition'.
Having lived beyond the turn of the century, William age 75 of
St Neot in 1901 is listed as 'Boot and Shoe Repairer-working on-Own account
at Home which is now at 'Truans Row'. Ann again had dropped a year to 74 but
back to being of Charlestown. They are living alone, William will pass away
in 1902 and I have no further line on Ann Hender after that.
Additional Notes
Emmeline Mary Hender, age 5, Residence of 'Park-field', St Ive buried 3 June
1866 per St Ive OPC parish record, no parents given but certainly fits.
William Hender, age 5, Residence of Parkfield, St Ive buried 8 November 1867
per St Ive OPC parish record, no parents given, yet a 'missing' space
child between Emmaline and John Hender who was born 2 years after Emmaline.
Three registered births are found in 'Nenkenid, Liskeard,
Cornwall, Charles Hender born 3rd quarter 1857, Thomas Hender born 1st quarter
1859, and Emmeline Mary Hender born 2nd quarter 1860. According to my database
these are the children of William and Ann Hender.
Rosina Hender, daughter of William Hender and Ann is married 4th quarter 1878
in the Liskeard district. I have her being baptized/christened 17Feb1856 at
Menheniot, Cornwall (db rec. # 1815) daughter of William Hender (miner) and Ann.

I see that you have done extensive research on the Hender Family in Cornwall. In your "MY CALLINGTON HENDER FAMILIES " you have listed my great Grandmother Rosina Hender 1856 daughter of William and Ann.
She married Silas West, gave birth to my Grandmother Emmeline Mary West in 1881, and is listed in the 1881 census.
Grandfather Silas West came to the USA about the same time, but I don't find that she immigrated with him.
Silas remarries a few years later in the US and my Grandmother is raised by her.
I cannot find any death record or any more information on her.
Very curious that she should disappear a few months after my grandmother was born in January 1881.
In any of your research have you come across Rosina Hender West after 1881?
